Here in Portland it's kinda good thing that the coronavirus was happening. Can you imagine the absolute cluster fuck things would have been if these protests would have been happening during Rose Festival? Just think of the chaos at the fun center. Yes, they would have closed the fun center but those gates wouldn't hold those large crowds. People wandering, looting the carnival games, climbing on rides.

I really think it is important to separate the protesters from those burning and looting. There have been sustained peaceful protests and by comparison very little of the other stuff. And the longer the protests go, the more peaceful they appear to become...

What we tend to react to is the destruction, because it is difficult to accept and awful to see. It hurts to watch...but not nearly as much as the videos of police brutality in reaction to the protest...

It has been said, and I agree, that judging the movement based on events like this fire, is like judging ALL police based on the brutal acts a small percentage have commited (Of course, there is an argument that lookawayism [just made that up] and systemic racism in the police force has contributed to this type of behavior, but that discussion is for another time, I'd say. We aren't there yet.).

yeah, its important to separate the two for sure.
I despise egotistical cops that abuse their power, Ive had my own run in's with them.
But punks that look for opportunities to piggy back a great cause just to take advantage of the event to harm and tear down, pisses me off too. In both cases I look at how it effects peoples lives and the impact it has.

While I agree that property loss doesn’t compare in importance with loss of life at the hands of police, it’s important IMO, to consider two things:

1. Much of the damage is being done to businesses that are located in poorer neighborhoods and the loss of those businesses hurts the very communities who are most impacted by the police violence to begin with; and

2.If real change is going to come out of this, this fight is about getting affluent white Americans to change the way they think about police and race. George Floyd’s horrible death hit us in a way that made any denial of the brutality impossible. Sentiment for change is higher than I’ve ever seen before. Looting and property destruction, and needless violence against police could easily erode that sentiment. It would be a terrible shame if Floyd’s death ultimately was for nothing.

the point I was making was that the company moving was actually the result of the actions of that cop, not really the protests. There was a direct correlation between events. And whether it's your intention or not, the fact remains that there are vested political interests that want to weld things like that company moving to the protests, ignoring who actually struck the match that started the fire

I also think there are tons of economic decisions being made that were going to be made anyway, and that Covid and the protests are just handy cover and scapegoats for those decisions.

I’ve been listening to other similar things recently. She makes some excellent points. I’d agree with most of what she says and I would agree that her anger is justified.

If I was talking with this lady I would ask which is most important to her, letting her justified anger burn, and with it her city, or getting white Americans to agree that the game has to be changed? The single most important thing that can happen to get change to come is to get a president in office who is willing to push that agenda. Most people right now, because of George Floyd’s horrible death, are of a mind that the time for change is here. I think that they’re tired of Trump and want to elect Biden so that the power of the federal government can be brought to bear to effect that change. But Trump is going to use every riot, every looting scene, every fire, and every liberal city council vote that moves towards defunding or disbanding police as a motivator of fear. I think the only way he wins is if enough people are scared into voting for him.

A scared vote has the potential to completely destroy this country, in my opinion. If Trump gets reelected, I can’t even imagine the chaos it will unleash.

Why are confederate flags synonymous with Trump insignia?
