Department of Transportation is spending $2 million of taxpayer money to find out if FEI makes planes crash
How do you lose power to both engines? Doesn't seem like that should be possible...Apparently lost power on takeoff. Crashed into a medical academy. Damn.

The engines should be completely separate from each other. Separate fuel lines, separate shut offs... It should be impossible for them both to fail at the same time without being actively disabled.Complete power failure? Two birds, one stone?

*Edit* To clarify, I don't know if that's the case on these jets, but it just seems like common sense.
The additional weight for having completely separate systems would have no impact on performance, and any added complexity could be easily mitigated.
Holy shit. Could you imagine surviving that?A guy survived Air India. He said there was a loud noise, then the plane crashed.

A loud noise like an explosion? Or did the controls break?
The investigation into the Air India crash is focusing on the engines, flaps, and why the landing gear came back down after takeoff. They are also looking into the possibility of a terrorist element.
