The only thing that I can say is that is Olshea is not laying in the weeds like Cho

I used to work with a relative of Tex Winter, so I know he has ties to Oregon.

I used to work with a relative of Tex Winter, so I know he has ties to Oregon.

Winter first came to Oregon in 1943, leaving Compton Junior College with a track scholarship to Oregon State in hand. He was a talented pole vaulter -- he won the Pacific Coast Conference title in that event and once vaulted 14 feet 4 inches with a bamboo pole, a better height than the one that Guinn Smith reached in winning the gold medal at the 1948 London Olympics.

Winter also was a reserve guard on Hall of Fame coach Slats Gill's basketball team, and although he considered competing for a spot on the Olympic team, a pulled muscle led him to turn to coaching instead. And basketball was the better for it.

Winter met his wife, a LaGrande native, at Oregon State, before quitting school to join the Navy. He trained to fly fighter planes off carriers, but the war ended and he didn't see combat. But Winter did get to play a lot of Armed Forces basketball and was spotted by USC coach Sam Barry.

I think Phil Jackson would have been an absolutely horrible choice for this team. Didn't Oshey say he wanted a coach that could teach? The guy was a master at managing large egos. But developing young talent? I just can't see it.

Sloan on the other hand would have taught them how to play the "right way". The players would have hated his style but I can see some logic there. But not Phil.

Not sure what Neil is looking for.

Jackson won't coach any team that doesn't have two super-stars.

weird, so chat with Sloan wasn't an interview, just a job offer?

Funny to read 4 different interpretations of what was likely the same quote:

Trail Blazers ‏@pdxtrailblazers
Neil Olshey says the meeting with Jerry Sloan was NOT an interview

Chris Haynes ‏@ChrisBHaynes
Neil Olshey said he offered Jerry Sloan a formal offer. He later took his name out.

Mike Tokito ‏@mtokito
Olshey said he offered Jerry Sloan the #Blazers job.

Joe Freeman ‏@BlazerFreeman
Olshey said he offered Jerry Sloan a chance to formally interview for #Blazers coaching job during their talk. Sloan eventually declined.

I agree that his use of the word "just" in the phrase "just a job offer" was quite odd. But after listening to the interview at the practice facility, my impression was that it was a job offer, and if Sloan had said yes, he would be the coach. That at least shows us Olshey is not stuck on Canales.

That's the way I understood it too. Odd choice of words, but it sounded like the job was Sloan's if he wanted it.

If our starting five was more 'set' I think Sloan would have taken it.

Right now, the starting PG and C are rookies, pending roster moves.

Last seasons GM, survey Mike Malone was the runaway winner as top assistant, how is this a close debate with Neil & Co. if they're looking at up-and-coming assistants?

yeah, this is how I understood it as well, not an application, an offer. He was ready to go to Paul to sign off on it.

No surprise here: Blazers have asked, and been granted permission, to interview Indiana assistant Brian Shaw for their head coach position

Perfect match: Stan Van Gundy's side pick-and-roll sets with Batum & Aldridge? Turkoglu played his best ball under SVG; could Batum blossom?

I'm fine with Mike Malone/Brian Shaw/SVG would rather have SVG from that bunch but I would pick any of those three as my first choice. I wouldn't mind Canalas simply because he has the complete support of the players.

It's an interesting thought ... I have to wonder how long it would last given SVG's tendency to grate on player's, but he's definitely a good coach and can probably install some structure.

Van Gundy’s offense, like so many in the NBA, seeks to spread the floor around a rotating pick-and-roll attack designed to punish defenses for deploying extra defenders to address the primary pick-and-roll action. It fixes the defense on the torturer’s rack, pulling it apart until it eventually breaks and surrenders an open shot.

The downside: His pace is just as slow as McMillan-ball.

Batum isnt half the ball handler turk is. That would be a train wreck.

Malone or shaw.

The only player thats really had a problem with SVG was Howard. Everybody knows how much of a diva Howard is.

See this shit about Patrick Ewing is now going to be interviewed?
