Why not Phil Jackson? We're probably the closest to his Montana home.

I would think if he came back for coaching, he wouldn't pick Portland as his destination.

The one really positive about hiring Caleb is that it sounds like Grgs is a lock to join his staff.

I think its very smart for the Blazers to hold off hiring a coach. If we trade the picks for veterans then sign a guy like Deron we could be title contenders and spend $5+million on the best coach available. If we go with a youth movement, draft young players, and sign young free agents there is no reason to waste tons of money on a proven coach when a younger assistant would be more energetic, far cheaper and probably better develop the rookies.

This roster is in more flux and far more unpredictable then in an average offseason. Management has only days before the draft and a few days after to start free agency. They will be extremely busy and need to spend their limited time on the tasks with the highest priority. The coaching search can easily be delayed a few weeks, the draft and free agency cannot.

That is some good thinking!

Also reported that Phil Jackson is not interested in the Knicks job because he says (correctly IMO) that Stoudamire and Anthony don't play well together.

Blazers GM Neil Olshey takes unprovoked shots at media and agents in discussing his team's ongoing coaching ... http://sulia.com/channel/portland-t...4-0ca2-421c-a038-652c363b5232/?source=twitter

That was a shot at the media? Olshey basically said he isn't going to let media or agents drive the hunt for a coach.

Ben is getting a little touchy. He might actually get big enough to have someone of importance refer to him by name. How is he going to react if he gets called out personally like other local media . . . I see a butt hurt Ben who becomes very bias in his reporting of the team.

Ben's account was hacked by Quick about a week ago...

You aren't with the Clippers anymore Olshey. You're no longer second fiddle in town.

Interesting... the Bobcats found their guy.

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/e...brian-shaw-quin-snyder-as-coaching-candidates

The Charlotte Bobcats reportedly have a new coach and he wasn't even one of their three finalists.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the Bobcats have hired St. John's assistant coach Mike Dunlap to replace former coach Paul Silas, who was let go by the Bobcats back in April.

Last week, the Bobcats reportedly narrowed their coaching search down to three candidates: former Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw and Los Angeles Lakers coach Quin Snyder. Shortly thereafter, Sloan announced that he was pulling his hat out of the race.

Dunlap's supposed to be a great basketball mind. He was formerly an assistant with the Nuggets and was with the Ducks for awhile. Before that he dominated in division II. Brilliant with X's and O's.

"Mike Dunlap absolutely elevates every player and team he comes into contact with," said Karl. "He is our guy. He will take you from good to great. Name any top-level, elite coach in the game - the only difference between Mike and them is their address. There is no higher level of coaching ability than his. There is absolutely no one better."

Motion offense guru.

Cho makes a nice under the radar hire. Doesn't seem like a Jordan type hire.

Anyone else hear on Courtside that they pulled this because Brian Shaw was dragging his feet because he was more interested in the Portland job? Or did my ears deceive me.

LOL did the talking heads say that?

Arguably cheaper than anyone else they talked to, which seems exactly like a Jordan type of hire.

Not at all saying it is a bad hire. Just that the price I am sure interested Jordan a ton.

I actually read that online as well, he is interested more in Orlando and Portland job, so wouldn't commit there.

Makes sense. I know from talking to.....er I think Malone would really like to coach here as well

Both seem like great choices regardless of the roster we have here. I agree with Olshey about evaluating roster and choosing the coach. Just think either Malone or shaw would be a good hire. Not super interested in Sloan. Only old coach I would want is Phil, and I have no thoughts he'd actually come here.

Well Charlotte has no place to go but up, so hard for new coach to screw up too much. As long as he doesn't post the worst record in NBA history the team is improving . . . that should be an easy target to reach.

I'll give props to Cho once they start winning. Cho doesn't have the golden touch so I'm not assuming this coach is automatically going to work out. To me this looks more like an economics decision by Charlotte (not hiring the top three on their list), but I don't know anything about him or much about Charlotte so who knows.

He probably will add to the draft evaluation process.
