The appeal is largely the same as most other sports. Competition to be better than thou. This just happens to be on the most basic of levels. In order to understand MMA, you must first understand the history of warfare and hand to hand combat. It has been around longer than any other sport, major or minor.
When assessing one's own body and physique, we are blinded by the now and our short term memory that allows us to live in a false security of complacency, thinking the world is what we see now, has always been this way and will always continue this way.
Until the inception of mechanized weapons in the 16th-17th centuries(not sure exactly), man has largely combated with hand to hand combat/weapons in a close and personal manner, of which most have little knowledge of because we live in the world of guns and are too afraid to be punched in the mouth.
MMA is a way for those who still believe in solving things with your fists vs using a deadly weapon to get to vent when we see and read about all the idiotic things that some idiotic gun owners do. (I am in favor of the 2nd amendment, doesn't mean there aren't idiots out there also protected by it.)

To each their own, but it is not far off from Boxing and Wrestling. as a matter of fact, most champions in the history7 of MMA have a Wrestling/Grappling background.

Now your just talking shit....

Why is that? I am genuinely curious? MMA us a much more complete form of combat and much more in line with what would really happen on the streets in a death match. I find it much more interesting than Boxing merely because of the fact that it is combat in its most pure form we can get while still having regulations for competition sake.

There are many idiots who are fans of the MMA though, this is for sure. With everything that Dana white has don't to make it a respectable sport, the fans do shit to derail the movement. Some fans love to think they are just as tough as these guys and its hilarious. With that said, it isn't table fucking tennis either, so some attitude will have to be expected when mixing with MMA fans, as sad as it is.

On another note, I don't get the thing about WWF anymore. I was a fan when I was a id. Had my Roddy Piper doll and all that shit, but it has changed and its a complete soap opera for adults now. I doubt would let my kids watch that shit if I had any. At least with MMA you are seeing, witnessing, visualizing and possibly participating in something that can teach you self defense.

I think we are in for some serious change real soon. With the Hilary debacle and the election in the fall, combined with Obama's inevitable surging push for gun control on the heels of the tragedy in Dallas, this country might just spin out of control real quick. We are much more fragile than most think when it comes to the economy and internal stability. If the Dallas situation continues to escalate across the country and the government calls for martial law and the gathering of arms, this country will go into complete turmoil, because no one will abide. When that happens, you know who will take advantage? Isis and other Terrorist cells waiting for us to devour ourselves from within and be so preoccupied, they feel they can swoop in and finish the job of sending us into a tail spin.

Self Defense might be a much higher priority of knowledge in the average Americans minds in the near future. Just sayin...

I appreciate the response... I guess I just don't understand how the basic evolution in all of us makes us want to sit around and watch OTHER people do it, you know?

It feels like a part of the movie 'idiocracy' where we are entertained by others beating each other up. I know they had gladiator stuff... but, I don't know... I understand the psychology of it, but I'm just surprised it's as big as it is for as openly violent it is.

I also find it ironic that the WWE toned itself down and it's fake because people thought it was too violent, to then make the UFC/MMA as big as it is, and that's all real. Seems kinda hypocritical... especially if it's supposed to be one of our inherent reactions to fight. (I must have missed that inherent quality, by the way.)

Ground and pound is boring as shit. Stand up fighting is at least interesting to watch.
Thats one reason mma is so awesome. Will the wrestler beat the striker and impose his will? Will the grappler control the wrestler? Will the brazillian jiu jitsu practitioner submit the wrestler from his back?

Lots of strategy involved.

Well, for one thing, they weren't paid to watch the games.
Bro mid 90s when weren't doing shit with guys like Robert Pack....... NEVER missed a game. That's my team. Didn't get into the business til 99

Those 90's teams were NEVER as bad as it was in the mid 2000s. Not even close.

Also, add in the whole Jail Blazers thing, the horrible front office that we had, and the fact that many people felt like the NBA is rigged, and... well..... you'll see a drop in support.

Just don't get it. I'd watch no matter what.

Sometimes there are factors outside of what's happening on the court. It's still a business.

I was a massive 49ers fan growing up. I fucking hate Jed York. I have a really difficult time supporting that organization. It's not just about the sport. Sometimes it's about supporting the horrible people in charge. Not saying that Paul is horrible, but I really disliked Steve Patterson. A lot of fans didn't want to support criminals. That's their prerogative.

Speaking of WWF, Dame was a HUGE fan growing up. Have heard him talking about it on the sidelines.....knows everybody names and trademark moves and sayings. It's hilarious!

Please set up an interview with him for me. I'll be in my mom's basement.

LOL, did anyone catch McGowan on TB court side tonight? Said he's taken a week long break from Twitter, implores fans to be nicer on social media. I haven't checked tweets at him but I imagine the dude has been getting roasted.

Also Dale Osbourne struggled to pronounce "Connaughton", never a good sign when the asst. coach doesn't know how to say your last name...

I'm surprised McGowan knows the team has fans...
