It was pretty quiet around the Portland Trail Blazers this summer. With Jusuf Nurkic the most important free agent could be kept, otherwise only minor changes were made to the squad. Can the Blazers repeat their good last season even though the competition has been diligently upgraded?

Portland Trail Blazers: The Transactions
The most important feature of the summer in Rip City was the extension of Center Jusuf Nurkic. This took off surprisingly quickly and smoothly, the Bosnian remains for another four years and a total of 48 million in the northwest.

On the other hand, Shabazz Napier and Pat Connaughton were not held. Both Guards were Restricted Free Agents, but Portland pulled back the qualifying offer in both cases. Unrestricted, the two joined Brooklyn and Milwaukee at the minimum for two years.

As a replacement, the Blazers shooter Nik Stauskas from Brooklyn got to the minimum. For Seth Curry, who missed the full season in Dallas for a knee injury, Portland used parts of the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception (2.8 million). Newcomers include first-round picker Anfernee Simons (# 24), who did not play college, and Duke's playmaker and second-round pick (# 39) Gary Trent Jr., for whom the Blazers earned two second-round picks (2019, 2021) and a little cash to Sacramento were trading.

Finally, the departure of Big Ed Davis caused a stir, which was considered a good friend of Damian Lillard. The franchise player was disappointed accordingly. In the end, the Nets simply offered more money by giving Davis the $ 4.45 million Room Exception for a year. Georgios Papagiannis, who was brought in last season, received his papers. The Greek Center is now back in his homeland for Panathinaikos.

Portland Trail Blazers: The Strategy
The core should be kept together and that was done with the Nurkic extension, the Bosnians signed a long-term, a very team-friendly deal. In addition, shooting at the Blazers was very high on the agenda and the new additions embody all this property.

Both Stauskas (40.0 percent threesome) and Curry (42.5 percent in 2016/17) and rookie Trent (40.2 percent in college) know how to put away throw-throws in the basket, bringing some much-needed firepower. In the playoffs, the Blazers fell to the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round terribly on the nose, because the litter just was not there. Only CJ McCollum and Al-Farouq Aminu scored better than the league average of 36 percent.

Generally, the Blazers have become a tad younger. It's idle to speculate whether Portland simply could not fish the available veterans, or whether the plan was actually to trust younger players. So it is now dependent on Zach Collins or Wade Baldwin are constantly in the rotation and can help the team. The side effect is that Portland has saved so much money, even though the franchise continues to rank above the luxury tax limit at $ 12.5 million.

The squad of the Portland Trail Blazers
Point guard Shooting Guard Small forward Power Forward center
Damian Lillard CJ McCollum Maurice Harkless Al-Farouq Aminu Yusuf Nurkic
Wade Baldwin IV Seth Curry Evan Turner Caleb Swanigan Zach Collins
Anfernee Simons Nik Stauskas Jake Layman Meyers Leonard
Gary Trent Jr.

Portland Trail Blazers: The Weaknesses
The starting five of the Blazers reads once again very well, but behind it gape further some threatening holes, it lacks balance in the roster. The forward positions are again very thinly occupied, from the trio Harkless, Turner and Aminu no one may injure themselves under any circumstances. However, only Harkless radiates great danger from a distance, Aminu and above all Turner are classified as streaky.

On the guard positions, however, there are shooters in abundance, but on the other hand, rather serious problems in the defense. Above all, the departure of Napier could hurt if Baldwin, Simons or Trent Jr. not hit reasonably. At least the performances of the youngsters in the Summer League, which won the Blazers for the first time, caused some confidence.

Much is based on the hope of potential, even among the bigs. Collins showed some light moments in his rookie season, including in the playoffs, but often played on the four alongside Davis. With his strength under the board, this was an essential reason that Portland had the best result in the regular season since 2000.

Collins, on the other hand, is more of a skill player who still lacks mass to permanently mimic the Nurkic backup. In 2017/18, Portland was still a top 5 team under the basket, it would not be surprising if the Blazers in this discipline in the upcoming season maximum average will be.

Portland Trail Blazers: The bearer of hope
Lillard has always said in the past that his team needs reinforcement, especially in terms of depth. This summer he did not get it again, also because financially lacking funds. It was therefore not surprising that trade rumors arose, so that the Blazers even felt compelled to publish a statement. In it, GM Neil Olshey once again made it clear that Lillard will continue to be a blazer.

With good reason: Portland needs again a Lillard, who acted as in the second half terrific, in the MVP voting even fourth and was elected to the All-NBA First Team. At 28, the Guard is in the prime of his career and will want to confirm the past season again.

"I can not control the Free Agency," Lillard said of the Blazers offseason. "But what I can control is how I can improve myself and lead this team in the coming season." That will be sorely needed, otherwise it could be a disappointing season in Rip City.

Portland Trail Blazers: The conclusion
The main goal of the offseason was achieved with the Nurkic extension, the Bosnian was not overpaid as feared. This is an important fact for the Blazers, who otherwise carry a lot of bad contracts, like those for Turner (2 years, 36.5 million) or Leonard (2 years, 21.8 million).

However, it remains a mystery why rotation players like Napier, Davis or Connaughton were made without much effort, also because on the other side with Curry and Stauskas no players came, in which the franchise players beat somersaults. So the best new additions to the team could actually be the Drafted.

However, in the embattled West, stagnation could have devastating consequences. It should not be fooled by third place from last season, the lead on ninth place (Denver) was just three wins.

Repeating the home advantage in the playoffs should be a Herculean task and it will probably mean that there will be a lot of hitting and stinging around the last postseason places with a lot of other teams. But this is not the claim of this ambitious team.

The Dallas Mavericks (12-10) make a dominant start against the Portland Trail Blazers (13-12). Although Dallas must tremble towards the end of the game, but also thanks to the strong bank to Maxi Kleber, the Mavs finally secure the 111:02 success (BOXSCORE)

After Lukas Doncic (hip) and Maxi Kleber (knee) had to pass due to minor injuries in the recent victory against the Clippers, both were back against Portland.
As expected, Doncic was right in the starting five and returned after about six minutes with a freezing threesome. His team-mates started with a hot knack of Downtown in the game, in the first quarter alone Dallas pounded the guests 5 threesomes (in 9 attempts) around the ears.
Although the Trail Blazers initially kept up well, but after the Mavs ended the round with a 17: 3 run, the home side had dropped significantly to 34:20. And in the second section, it was also excellent from Mavs point of view.
Kleber put the exclamation point on a 6-0 run with a nice jump-hook, with which the Mavs extended their lead up to 17 points. Although Portland started small runs every now and then, Dallas quickly found a suitable answer every time. So it was finally with 60:45 for the home side in the half-time break.
After the break, however, the Mavericks were always good opportunities to continue to settle. Instead, they took their foot off the gas, which soon avenged. Slowly but surely Damian Lillard turned on the other side.
After a weak first half, in which he fitted, inter alia, a wide-open Dunk to the ring, led the 28-year-old his team with 15 points in the third section back in strike distance. In the meantime, the Trail Blazers had even reduced the gap to 8 points.
But then the bank brought the Mavs back on track. First Dwight Powell sank two straight three times in a row from exactly the same spot, then Kleber brought his team with a crashing putback dunk with 87:73 in front. With this score, it finally went into the final quarter.

There, J.J. Barea and co. Continued the run, at the end of a quarter-round 10-0 run Dallas had a 19-point lead on the credit side. Even then, Kleber and Co. continued to put pressure. Among other things, the German convinced with a spectacular alley oop and a block on the other side of the court.

But that should not be it by a long shot. When the starters of both teams came back on the podium, Portland launched the next comeback attempt. Again it was Lillard (33 points and 8 assists) who led his team with numerous strong actions.
First, Portland shortened with a 7-0 run to 7 points, about a minute and a half before the siren caused Lillard with a tip-in even for the 99: 105 from Portland point of view. But on the other side, Doncic had the right answer ready. By step-back-threesome he brought the Mavs back up to 9 points.

Shortly thereafter, Dennis Smith Jr. (11 and 9) set the Dagger after a perfectly played, long Outlet pass from Doncic - 110: 99 and thus victory for Dallas! The Slovene was not only there in the final minute, but also the top scorer of his team.

The No.3 pick scored 21 points and grabbed an additional 9 rebounds. Meanwhile, Wesley Matthes scored 17 points, DeAndre Jordan made a strong double-double (12 points, 17 rebounds) and Kleber finished the game with 8 points, 5 rebounds (4 on the offensive board), 3 steals, 2 assists and one Block.

Thus Dallas secured the ninth victory from the past eleven games, so the soaring of the Mavs continued. Quite different, however, was the mood of the Trail Blazers. Despite the strong performance of Lillard, the guests had to accept the sixth loss from the past seven games.
The most important statistics:
The Mavs started extremely hot from Downtown, but then cooled down a bit during the game. Dallas sank 11 out of 30 threes (36.7 percent) and had a small advantage over Portland. For the guests, it was rather modest from a distance (7/24, 29.2 percent). Another advantage for Dallas was the rebounding. The Mavs dominated the boards both offensively and defensively. While DeAndre Jordan and Co. had to give off only one offensive rebound at half-time, Dallas on the other hand collected strong 8 boards. At the second-chance-points it was at halftime accordingly 8-0 for the Mavericks. In the end, Dallas had 15 offensive rebounds (POR: 11). At the start of the season, the Bank of the Trail Blazers was still one of the team's great assets, but during the current low also the production of the reservists decreased. In contrast to the bank of the Mavs, led by Barea and Kleber again delivered a strong performance that evening. The reserve duel went to Dallas at 38:25. Just towards the end of the third quarter, when Dallas relinquished again, Portland had far too many ball losses. Altogether the Trail Blazers had 19 turnovers in the boxscore at the end of the evening, while Dallas was very good at the Spalding eight (13 TO).
The star of the match:
The bank of the Mavs. The lineup of Barea, Kleber and Powell did a great job from the bank. This was mainly due to the unremitting use of the reservists on the floor - both in the defense and on the other side of the court in the form of some important offensive rebounds.
The flop of the game:
Jusuf Nurkic. Of the three-headed Monster of the Trail Blazers was relatively little to see this evening. Next to Lillard and C.J. McCollum, who still contributed 18 counters, disappointed Nurkic, who could set off offensive no accents and defensive one after another was taken by surprise. In addition, he also had 6 fouls.
Coaching Move the game:
It was a bit difficult to understand why Mavs coach Rick Carlisle sent his starters back to the floor about 7 minutes before the end of the session, after the reservists had once again given the team a big lead. The starters, on the other hand, did not score much offensively. The strong ball movement over long stretches of the game came to a standstill in many sequences in the Crunch Time, causing Dallas to miss a few good throws. So the home side had to tremble again for the victory.

NBA Game Review: Rockets Bank Ends Breaking Series Against Blazers

12.12.2018 04:28

After three defeats in a row, the Houston Rockets (12-14) have won again. Against the Portland Trail Blazers (15-12) it was above all the bank of the hosts, which against Damian Lillard, C.J. McCollum and Co. made the difference. The Rockets won thanks to a strong second half at the end with 111: 104.

After three consecutive defeats, Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni responded by making a change in his starting five. Eric Gordon slipped into the team for James Ennis as the Oregon guests relied on the familiar staff. Portland started a little drowsily, but made the better impression in the first minutes, because Damian Lillard and also C.J. McCollum (together 20 points in the first quarter) had quickly found their touch, a 19:10 lead for the guests in the middle of the quarter was the result.
By contrast, the Rockets looked just as bad as in previous weeks. James Harden struggled with his throw, defensive on his own board was not packed and also otherwise the Blazers came too often too close to the basket. In the meantime, the gap grew to 15 points, but the reservists Portland did not succeed. Thanks to a 15-2 run, the Rockets were back on two points after 12 minutes (27:29).
Especially Danuel House and Gerald Green brought the Rockets important relief and so Houston had turned the game, although Harden and CP3 (together 3/12 FG) until then did not succeed. But now thawed Gordon with some drives on, otherwise dominated now on both sides of the defensive, points were now fiercely contested. An And-One from Jusuf Nurkic, a real Hustle Play, was the final half of the first half, with the Blazers taking a 54-51 lead into the cabin.

James Harden turns up after the break:

Even after the break, the trend continued. It developed a balanced game in which now the stars were in the foreground. McCollum and Lillard repeatedly scored against the Rockets-Bigs, on the other hand took over more and more of the MVP. The booked 15 counter in the section and gave himself a nice shootout with lady who caught fire at the same time. Nevertheless, the Rockets had now upper water, because again the reservists with a lot of passion attracted the audience on their side (84:81).
The Rockets also put in a 7-0 run, the highest Houston lead of the evening was perfect. And at this rate it went on. Paul served Clint Capela on praise, Danuel House put down the drive, the Blazers needed a break after this 20: 3 run (95:81). But Portland had not yet beaten, the Guard duo brought the Blazers back on 7 counter, also fouled Capela prematurely. However, the guests could not get closer than five points, the Rockets Pleiten series was over.
Top scorer of the Rockets course was Harden, who posted 19 of his 29 counters (10/21 FG) after the change. CP3 (11, 2/10 FG, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) had little luck with his throw, but he was always good at second unit. There produced mainly House (12) and Green (13), while Isiaiah Hartenstein was not used. For Portland scored only Lillard (34, 12/25 FG), McCollum (22, 10/21 FG), Nurkic (15, 10 rebounds) and Aminu (10, 15 boards) double digits.

The most important statistics

Houston Rockets (12-14) vs. Portland Trail Blazers (15-12) 111: 104 (BOXSCORE)

Rebounding has been one of Rocket's biggest problems in the past few games, and this trend continued for Portland. In the first half alone, the Blazers collected 9 offensive rebounds, a brutal 42 percent of all available boards. In the first quarter alone, the Blazers had already scored 8 Second Chance Points. Houston made it much better after that, with just four more offensive rebounds for Portland.

This advantage, however, the guests made up for by some very unnecessary turnovers. It would also have been good and happy to be more than just 7 TO after 24 minutes. In the end it was 15, the Rockets, however, were just 8.

Somewhat surprising was that it was the bank that brought the Rockets back into the game. Led by CP3, House, Ennis, Gerald Green and Nene excelled. At break this quartet had already scored 19 points, the Rockets managed this season often not even in a complete game. After 48 minutes it was 37 (POR: 13).
Portland is one of the teams that consistently deliver the three-way line and sometimes accept light points on the ring, which was no different this evening. The Rockets only took 29 threes, as few as ever this season. But the hosts also achieved a lot of counters in the zone, namely whopping 64, while Portland only came to 46.

0 attempts from the free throw line after 24 minutes, that is rare with Harden, but Portland succeeded this feat actually. Only after the change, the MVP could pull a few shooting fouls (7 attempts). In general, the Rockets could pull much better fouls after the break, just in the fourth quarter, the Rockets marched repeatedly to the line for light points.

Houston Rockets vs. Portland Trail Blazers: The voices to the game

Mike D'Antoni (Head Coach Rockets) on Nene: "Today we finally saw old Nene again and I do not mean his age."
Terry Stotts (Head Coach Blazers): "Your bank made the difference today, it's that simple."

The star of the game:
The Bank of the Rockets. It would be unfair to pick a single actor from Houston's bank, as Ennis, Nene, Green and House were too closed. For weeks, the lack of production of the Second Unit was bitching, this time proving the opposite. Green nailed some threes, House attacked fearlessly and Nene played strong defense. These were all the factors that ultimately put the Rockets on the road to victory.

The flop of the game:
Evan Turner. As leader of the bank ET remained almost completely colorless, above all he radiated little danger for the opposing basket. So the Blazers offense looked absolutely terrible in the stages with him in the field. So it was little wonder that the forward also had the worst plus minus of all players on the field (-17).

Coaching Move the game:
The Rockets tried especially at the beginning to trap the dreaded Pick'n'Roll between Lillard and Nurkic, the Bosnians should be forced as Roll Man to make decisions. But the center did a good job and found the free shooters in the corners several times. That's why the Rockets adjusted their scheme a little and tried to defend Lillard more conservative in the episode. The (as well as McCollum) could work against the bigs of the Rockets after the switch but again and again good litters and punished this consistently. However, Lillard hardly tied in his teammates (only 2 assists) and so his breathers made extremely noticeable. As the lady took a seat on the bench, the Rockets decided the game.

I love how you only post these after losses so nobody reads them.

Damn Bones you have no idea what you talking about. The German nba site does not often give a detailed account of Blazer's games, because hardly anyone here is interested in Portland. but the Mavericks and Okc get detailed reports about their Games because of Nowitzki/Kleber and Schröder. The only Blazers games that got a detailed report here this year was the debut of Lebron, the game against Dallas and today against Houston
