Blazers in worldwide media

Damn Bones you have no idea what you talking about. The German nba site does not often give a detailed account of Blazer's games, because hardly anyone here is interested in Portland. but the Mavericks and Okc get detailed reports about their Games because of Nowitzki/Kleber and Schröder. The only Blazers games that got a detailed report here this year was the debut of Lebron, the game against Dallas and today against Houston

That makes sense. The US is the same with the Bundesliga. Dortumund and Schalke get coverage because high profile Americans play for them. The rest of the league barely gets any coverage unless one of their matches is showcased on television from time to time.

NBA Legend series: Arvydas Sabonis - Victim, Mystery, Revolucer

19.12.2018 13:39

Lithuania has always been considered a great basketball nation. The big Soviet teams had mainly players from the Balten state in their squad. From the golden generation of the Baltic even today a name stands out: Arvydas Sabonis. In the 80s he dominated all of Europe, the Cold War kept him prisoner beyond the Iron Curtain. Nonetheless, the versatile center is a pioneer in a new genre in NBA history. Sabonis is 54 years old today.
"Always a bit strange, you never looked cool - a Lithuanian I wanted to be a friend, but unfortunately you came a bit too late - fed like a real big man, right? Arvydas Sabonis! Arvydas Sabonis! 15 points per game, a model for a woman - you laughed last, had a pretty good life, right? Arvydas Sabonis! Come back, we miss you! "
Not too many basketball icons can boast a song that bears its own name. Arvidas Sabonis - that's the title of Margot and the Nucelar So and So's. It is a Lithuanian hymn, a homage to the unforgotten hero of the country.
Presumably, the Indianapolis band's song is limited to the minimalist idiom of emotion because it would not be possible to sing of Sabas' unparalleled abilities and achievements in 3 minutes and 23 seconds. And then you would not have heard a word about his strange, sad and unique way to the NBA.
"I'm no longer a locomotive, just a small baggage car. "Arvydas Sabonis, 1995. Understatement Just do not steal too high expectations, and the center was a big one in Europe when it was launched in Portland, or rather, the biggest.

First Kaunas, then the whole world:

Sabonis was so talented that at the age of 17 he was appointed to the professional team of Zalgiris Kaunas in his hometown. At this time he played basketball for only 48 months. Two years later, the whole world knew him.
At EuroBasket in 1983, he led the USSR bronze medal and impressed players, coaches and experts. Bill Walton, TV analyst at the time, came back frantically from France: "He was 19 years old and played like a 2.21-meter-tall Larry Bird," said Walton: "He ran like the wind, hit threes, dribbled like magic Johnson picked up rebounds like Wilt Chamberlain and blocked off throws like Bill Russell, who had probably already had a quadruple double at half-time in one game, leaving our mouths open and dreaming of kidnapping this Communist prisoner"

No escape:

That was the big problem. The political climate of the Cold War Sabonis built the way into the NBA. The Soviet Union banned all its basketball players from playing in the United States. Point, off, end of discussion.
With the change of power to Mikhail Gorbachev, the NBA franchises began to hope for the top prize from overseas. The Draft 1985, the Atlanta Hawks dared and pulled Sabas with the 77th pick in the fourth round.
And again there was a problem: The center was not yet 21 years old at that time, so the pick was invalid according to NBA regulations. In 1986, the Trail Blazers attacked. In position 24, they chose Sabonis - who learned this news, however, only some time later from a basketball magazine.

The triumphal procession begins:

The Iron Curtain was not to fall until 1989, so Sabonis had no choice but to continue his triumphant advance in Europe. With Kaunas he brought three USSR titles in series, was heaped with awards. On the gold medal with the Soviet team and the election for MVP at the European Championships in 1985 in Germany was followed by silver '86 in Spain and a place in the All Tounament team.
His masterpiece delivered Sabas at the 1988 Olympics. He dominated the tournament on the boards and won in the semifinals with his team against the favored USA, which were starred with stars such as David Robinson and Mitch Richmond high profile.

In a roundabout way:

In contrast to Drazen Petrovic, Vlade Divac or compatriot Sarunas Marciulionis Sabonis made after the opening of the border even a stopover in Spain, before he took the plunge across the pond.
His certificate in excerpts: two ACB titles, MVP 94/95, Euroleague triumph and Final Four MVP '95 and the fourth award for Europe's basketball player of the year. His last season on the Iberian Peninsula has not only gone down in history with Real Madrid: 22.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.6 steals. In 34 minutes !!
"That's it for me," Sabonis said after the season, "I do not have to prove anything to Europe and the basketball world, the only thing left is the NBA." Finally, nine years after being drafted, it was time for the US. "Portland had called and asked if I wanted to come over," Sabas said years later, "and I knew that if I did not go now, I would never go again."

war wounds:

And again Sabas accompanied a problem. The violent international schedule of the Soviet Union, which wanted to gain reputation in the Cold War, among other things about their sporting achievements, had left its mark.
Even before the draft in 1986, he suffered a Achilles tendon rupture, 1988, the tendon had to be operated on a second time. But Olympia was on and Sabonis was simply not missing. Contrary to the advice of the Portland doctors, who cared for him during his injury, Sabonis was injected at the insistence of the Soviet Union and flew to South Korea. It came, what had to come: Gradually developed Sabas chronic ankle, knee and calf problems - then came even arthritis in the foot. His body was a wreck before arriving in Portland.
When Blazers doctor Don Roberts got to see the medical records of the 31-year-old, he called immediately GM Bob Whitsitt: "Only Sabonis' x-rays would be sufficient to apply for a disabled parking space," said concerned Doc: "His foot looks like this Nasty, it may be that he can not walk, let alone play basketball. " But Whitsitt just replied, "Oh, he can play." Because that was Sabas.
"Every day he played with pain, "said former athletic trainer Jay Jensen:" Except that they varied from day to day. But he's a fighter, an incredible biter. "And the man knows what he's talking about: Just before the crucial Game 3 of the 2000 Western Conference Semifinals, Sabonis broke her ankle and hobbled into the cabin." Suddenly, it cloned, he did grunted once and then he got up and went on the field ", Jensen describes the incredible scene.
Every other player would have expected a weeks break. Not Sabas. As if nothing had happened, he led his Blazers with 22 points and 8 rebounds for the decisive 3: 0 against the Utah Jazz. What a tough dog.

The revolution

At Rose Garden Sabonis was a crowd pleaser from day one - no wonder in his attitude. But there was something else that made the mystery beyond the Iron Curtain, of which only a handful of scouting tapes had come to the US apart from live images of major international events, especially: It was his way of playing. It was like a revolution.
Not only did he feel as comfortable in his face-up as he did with his back to the basket - no, the 2.21-meter center already had a high-percentage threesome when Dirk Nowitzki still ran the drum around the Christmas tree. And only his passes! Behind the back, behind the head, No look - Sabonis always found a way to make the Anspiel exceptional. He was the first point center in history.

The oldie rocks

The Blazers' risk paid off straightaway, and as a 31-year-old rookie, Sabas posted 14.5 points (38 percent threesomes) and 8.1 rebounds - just to break the playoffs to 23.6 points (56 percent threes) and 10 To boost 2 boards. In the election for the rookie of the year, he finished second behind Damon Stoudamire, even in the voting of the best sixth man, he had to settle for second place (behind Toni Kukoc).
Every year Sabonis reached the playoffs with the Blazers, in 2000 they had a great chance. In the Conference Finals, Portland were already 1-3 down the Lakers led by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, but Sabas and Co. fought to a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter of Game 7. Then they broke on.
It was the only - and admittedly pretty good - opportunity for Sabonis to crown his unparalleled career with an NBA ring. In the finals waited the weaker rated Indiana Pacers, who sent Shaq and Kobe home 4-2 and secured the title.

In the second attempt:

The first return to Lithuania, with his newly formed national team Sabonis had won during his NBA time still two Olympic bronze medals and world championship silver, failed in 2001 in several injuries - he could not deny a single game for Zalgiris Kaunas. After a last reservist season in Portland, the lap of honor that followed the retirement followed by the home.
With Kaunas Sabas won a final league title and crowned with 39 years (!) Again for Euroleague MVP (16.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals in 28 minutes). It was the perfect end to Sabonis' long and successful career, which earned him the much-deserved recognition of being inducted into the 2011 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The true G.O.A.T.?

Hymns of praise to Arvydas Sabonis are sung not only in Lithuania. And not only from Margot and the Nucelar So and So's - but also from Donnie Nelson, GM of Dallas Mavericks and longtime assistant coach of the Lithuanian national team.
"Arvydas was Dirk Nowitzki, just 2.21 meters," Nelson said, "I do not think there was another player in the story who could do what Sabonis was capable of, he's one of the best ever wore a basketball jersey. "
And with this opinion, Nelson is not alone: "I have played against Sabonis since I was 16 years old," said Detlef Schrempf several years ago in an interview: "If he had previously gone to the NBA, he might be the best player of all Times have become. "

NBA match report: OT thriller - crazy Doncic threesome is not enough for Mavs victory

24.12.2018 05:37

The Dallas Mavericks conceded a bitter defeat in the OT against the Portland Trail Blazers. The game seemed to be lost in regular time, but Luka Doncic sent the Mavericks with a crazy threesome in the overtime. Dirk Nowitzki, however, was not used.

Both teams come awake from the cabin and move at the beginning of the game in lockstep. Beneath the Mavericks' basket, Jusuf Nurkic caused quite a stir with some offensive boards. J.J. Barea scored two free throws, the Mavs went with a narrow lead in the break (27:25).

In the second section Maxi Kleber provided some strong scenes, he cleared Evan Turner at the defensive end and scored five points in a row on offense. Nonetheless, the Blazers came into the game better, scoring three straight and leading for the first time, 36:32. Barea was injured for a short while while Portland managed to gain a small lead. Nurkic scored a 10-point lead to break time with a late two-count, 62:52.
In the second half Harrison Barnes took over for the Mavericks, while Luka Doncic had problems with his throw. This, too, was one reason why the Blazers defended their lead. On the hosts side, Damian Lilllard was the main player in this section, scoring 12 points in the third quarter. With 88:80 it went into the final section.

Mavericks: Doncic meets crazy threesome

The Blazers managed to keep the Mavs at bay, but with 4:30 minutes to go, Barnes brought the visitors home with a deep threesome of 100: 95. Wesley Matthews is following another strong triple defense and rejoins the same spot a short time later, leading the Mavs. Portland has problems on offense at this stage, but Mo Harkless scored an open-three from the corner, 103: 102 Blazers.
Doncic and McCollum both hit Midranger before Lillard gave his side a 3-point lead. The Mavericks stayed around 40 seconds on the shotclock. Matthews took a difficult threesome, Airball. The Mavericks missed their last chance. Not with Luka Doncic: After a deliberately discarded freebie by rookie Jalen Brunson, the Mavericks still had a throw-in, with 0.6 seconds on the clock. Doncic was served in the corner of the ball, Bang!

The Blazers started better overtime and quickly earned a 5-point lead, but two dunks of DeAndre Jordan brought the Mavericks back 116: 115. 34.2 seconds before the end, Lillard converted a Leger, the Blazers again led with three points. In the next attack, the Mavericks earned two open threes, but from which two bricks resulted. Lillard secured the Blazers victory on the line.
Best shot at the Mavericks was Barnes with 27 points (11/20 FG), Luka Doncic scored 21 points, 11 boards and 6 assists. DeAndre Jordan put on the usual double-double (14, 10). Maxi Kleber was in the field for around 17 minutes, scoring 5 points, 7 boards and collecting 2 blocks. On the Blazers side, Lillard scored 33 points and 7 assists. Cj McCollum contributed 22 points.

Im sure this reads a bit better in German but its funny that the German site has a better Blazer game recap than most of our local media.

Also thanks for posting these!

I'm glad I missed that "crazy Doncic threesome" during the game. He'd be even better if he wasn't distracted on the court.

The Trail Blazers have celebrated four wins from the past five games after their intermittent weakness in early December - thanks in part to Jusuf Nurkic. The Big Man has averaged 22.2 points and 12.5 rebounds in the past six games, beating the Knicks with 20 points and 8 boards in just 19 minutes.
It was not really nice to watch that. Especially the first half, in which no team could settle with more than 8 counters, had little highlights to offer. In the third section, however, Portland took over the book. Damian Lillard scored 11 of his 17 points (plus 9 assists) in this round and the Trail Blazers moved away.
Also C.J. McCollum scored 17 points and Seth Curry (13), Evan Turner (10) and Jake Layman (10 and 10 boards) also performed well. So Portland finally sat down in the middle of the final section to 18 counters, so that the game was decided.
With the Knicks still Enes Kanter was with 18 points and 14 rebounds best man, also Noah Vonleh put on a strong double-double (16 and 14), while Emmanuel Mudiay contributed 17 counters and 7 assists. The now 16th defeat from the last 19 games but could not prevent them.

In Bosnian media there is full of praise for Nurk. Game reports, his dunks, blocks, points, assist all that is included in video content. But last article, above copied link, is about focus on the record - actually there is written that Nurk is writing a history in Portland because last match vs Knicks was his 34th match with 20 + points which is third best result among all time Portland centers. Only two centers are above him Kevin Duckworth with 123 matches with 20 + points and Arvydas Sabonis with 66 matches.

Did you know that?

Did Quick write this? Totally made up and has nothing to do with Nurk. Trash journalism!

Unfortunately, that statement is incorrect. According to Basketball-reference, Nurk only has 32 games with 20+ points as a Blazer, and that is 8th among centers in Blazer history.

I wrote them and attached the link with correct statistic. I assume that there is Nurk euforia, we are small country without many big stars and trophies so probably overeact with praise to somebody who do something well, as is Nurk recently :) additionaly i can tell you that ptb fan base in Bosnia is becoming bigger and bigger, a lot of people watch Nurk and Ptb. I am glad for that.

Tell them I just saw Nurk walk across the Willamette river while feeding homeless people.

I found original source of this incorect news it is some brasilian twiter account and bosnian media just copy pasted it..

As for Nurk, there is long list which i can tell you what he do and how he shows what kind of man is he.. trust me...man with hart, a big patriotism, and much more. He is one big and good man. Hope that PTB will get the best of him.

Everybody loves Nurk here. He's the best center we've had in a LOOOOOOONG time! I think he can be in the top 3 of 20-pt scorers at center for the Blazers by the end of his career.

Hello.. there is new, exclusive interview eith Nurkic in Bosnian sports portal.

This is the link:
http://inforadar.ba/ekskluzivno-int...-u-americi-bosnu-sve-vise-spominju-zbog-mene/

Long to translate all, but i will just point out some of the most interesting answers..
Wow, what's up with that interviewer? Trying to get Nurk to say the Blazers aren't promoting him enough, and then asking about his contract being a steal and him being severely underpaid? And I thought Canzano was bad...

Fortunately Nurk deflected those loaded questions very well.

on all star: he said that he does not think about that and there are some other circumstances, but he is glad that Bosnia is mentioned in America more often. He said as welll that he does not care much about his individual statistic but more about teams wins because he hate to lose and he loves this city and the club.

On his contract: He said he doesn't think about more money, but must be happy with that what you have and he is happy. Club alreday had big payments and he does not think about that.

On charity - said 'he does not want to mention that' ( he is that kind of man, believe me there are many charity actions by him but he never speak about that)

On his success: said that he plays basketbal since his 14th year old, and when nobody trusted in him, his manager did and thanks to him he is here now. Furthemore he said he wouldn't be good without his teammates, without team spirit and especially DAMIAN LILLARD, who is something BEST that happened to his carrer. He said also 'Lillard happened to me'...

There are also some questions about Bosnian realeted topics but it is not something well interested for you i suppose (internal bosnian bad situation)

On that promotion by Blazers team he said nothing. he just said it is easier to go on all star from multimilions cities and bigger fan base clubs and that he does not think about that. He wants only wins.

The Portland Trail Blazers continue to be one of the few constant teams in the West, celebrating victory 28 of the season against the Pelicans. Decisive factors were once again the good defense and the work on the offensive board.
Over the past ten games, the Trail Blazers are now the fourth-best defensive rating team, most notably coach Terry Stotts. In addition, his boys gathered against the Pelicans strong 18 offensive rebounds, which led to a total of 23 Seconds Chance points.
In addition to the almost usual points-yield of Damian Lillard (24 points, 8/20 FG, 8 assists), especially Jake Layman from the bench to convince. With 20 points, he scratched his previous career high (24) and made sure that Portland could win the duel of the second units with 37:25 for themselves.
In the Pels Nikola Mirotic returned to the team, but still had problems with his shot (13 points, 3/10 FG). Anthony Davis scored 27 points in 9 of 17, but could not prevent the defeat, as did Jrue Holiday (20) and Julius Randle (19, 9 boards).

Portland Trail Blazers (34-23) - Golden State Warriors (41-16) 129:107

http://m.spox.com/de/sport/ussport/...-ein-kerr-fliegt-giannis-wie-chamberlain.html

Without DeMarcus cousins, Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston, the Warriors traveled north to Portland, but even without this trio, the spectators in the Moda Center were offered a real spectacle. For 48 minutes it was back and forth, no team was able to (decisively) settle for a long time. The game was balanced 16 times, there were 22 changes of leadership.
For Golden State, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant had to carry a huge load, because at Klay Thompson (9, 2/16 FG, 8 assists) the Shooting Guard did not want to fall at all. Only in 2013 fell less for Klay against Sacramento (1/13 FG). Efficient, however, were the ideas of Durant (32, 12/17 FG) from the middle distance was still hot and Curry (32, 10/24 FG), but like the entire Warriors team in the fourth quarter dived.
In the fourth quarter it was the other curry that caused a sensation. Two successful deals by Seth (11) gave Portland the highest lead ever (110: 103), including a drive against his brother. A little later it was heated. After Thompson and Zach Collins had clashed before, Draymond Green conceded a controversial Flagrant-1.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr did not agree with that at all, he knocked his board to the ground and yelled at the referees, the result was of course the ejection. In the midst of all this hustle and bustle, Portland continued to breathe (all free-throws made it an eight-point game!) And was suddenly 15 points ahead after a 3-goal by Jake Layman (17). The thing was eaten quickly, because Layman refilled once again and Damian Lillard from Downtown finally put the lid on it.
Dame scored a total of 29 points with just 15 throws, equal eight players scored at least 10 points. Zach Collins also blocked 3 throws in the fourth quarter, changing the dynamics of the game. The dubs were ultimately rolled over with 35:12 in the final section and hit only 24 percent from the field. Portland, however, threw the ball in the game only four times away.

Google Translator sucks. And fuck German Media. Hardly anything about the Blazers, almost only Warriors

The Trail Blazers on the Rise - (This Time) More Than a Regular Season Team?

The Portland Trail Blazers have once again established themselves in the top group in the West and are on course for home advantage thanks to five wins in a row. But is this team better than in previous years, where you had no chance in the playoffs? The improved defense could make the difference this time.

It was remarkably quiet in the Celtics' Locker Room after the fourth defeat in the play, this time against the Portland Trail Blazers. Only 92 points scored the hosts, met the whole evening nothing at all, and yet the echo was much quieter than after the losses in Chicago or Toronto.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens did not want to blame his team and even praised the offense of his troupe. But most of all, there was a lot of praise for the opponent: "If you do not score threes against them, it will be difficult, they will defend really tough, are incredibly active and very long," Stevens analyzed after the game.
Since the All-Star Break the Blazers may not have heard this for the first time. On a 7-game road trip, the first four games were all won impressively, including against the heavyweights Boston and Philadelphia and in Brooklyn against another legitimate playoff team. It seems like the story of the past few years is repeated: The Blazers are a legitimate top team in the West, in the full league.

Blazers one of the top teams since the beginning of the year

Since January, only the Warriors, Raptors and Bucks lost fewer games than Portland, the Blazers are second in offense and also good eight in the defense. Only Milwaukee and Toronto are also top 10 in both categories in this period. Terry Stotts' team is now back in fourth place in the West, alongside third-placed Oklahoma City Thunder (38-23). 3-0 in direct duel) in front of them.
That may be a little under the table, since the Blazers have been a constant in the playoff picture for years. The most important components in the team are the same, you know what you get every night from the Blazers. One knows each other and is recorded, which is also shown by the numbers.
The quartet from Damian Lillard, C.J. McCollum, Al-Farouq Aminu and Jusuf Nurkic have played almost one complete half of the field per game, scoring 10.0 points on 100 possessions more than their opponents. This is a board and the absolute peak in the league in quartets that are together on the field for so long.

Obligation of Enes Kanter a coup

So Portland could always allow some lengths with the second unit, and just Nik Stauskas or Meyers Leonard were major weaknesses. Both are now playing no major role, Stauskas was exchanged for Rodney Hood and Leonard and partly also Zach Collins cash DNPs, because the Blazers could secure Enes Kanter on the buyout market.
Boston is said to have had interest in the Turks, the contract was ultimately awarded Portland. "With Kanter, they have another important player who can scorer when it's not working," Stevens praised the center, who played 8 points and 7 rebounds against the Celtics. "This can be important in the playoffs when playing with the second unit and one of the guards (Lillard or McCollum, editor's note)."

However, the numbers do not prove this yet. The ex-Knicks player comes in his four missions so far on a negative net rating of -13, the sample is of course tiny. Just the weak offensive rating (95.6) also indicates that the Blazers are still looking for the right plays for Kanter. The pace also sank massively with the new commitment in the basement.

Portland: Defense is strong:

Nevertheless, Kanter as another center of enormous importance, since he has his weaknesses in defense, but also always playing hard, which fits perfectly with the style of Blazers. "We're just incredibly physically occupied in the big positions," noted Moe Harkless, who is getting more and more excited after his knee problems at the start of the season.
This also applies to the Defense, which now reminds of past years. There is nothing for Portland. The team makes little losses (12 per game, 2nd place), rarely fights (8th place) and approves little in the zone and also from a distance. So Portland admits the most middle distance throws and for that the fewest three from the corner (only 5.4 per game) - they force thus the correct throws with the opponent.
Interestingly, Portland is less dependent on its star guards. Their quotas and production declined slightly in 2019, especially Lillard has been hitting just 30 percent from a distance for the past two months. The fact that the Blazers are still winning their matches will make those in Oregon satisfied.

"We were physical, always ready, we had fast hands, we let them work for their points," Lillard praised his team after the win in Boston. "If they got an open throw, it was only after three or four extra passes, which cost them strength and made them tired." In fact, Boston only worked 15 open threes, four under the season's average. That only two of them went through the trap and Marcus Morris and Al Horford remained completely cold, was then a little luck.

Blazers: Can they make Some noice in the playoffs?

That will certainly need it in the playoffs. The recipe from a solid defense and the two dynamic Guards from Lillard and McCollum brought in the postseason little success. The pelicans impressively demonstrated in their sweep how to get Portland off balance.
From the wing was too little danger, the trio of Evan Turner, Aminu and Harkless brought too little, especially from a distance. The matchup was very bitter, but also blatantly revealed all its weaknesses - and is still a little on the blazers today.
Also in Boston lacked Firepower (all Blazers without Lillard were 3/23 from Downtown), yet the guests prevailed in the TD Garden, because it was true in the Defense. Whether Portland can maintain this level will be revealed, among other things, on Saturday night when Lillard and Co. compete in Toronto. Also in the episode, the Blazers is waiting for a crisp program with more road trips, it should be the final yardstick for whether Portland is more than just a good regular season team.
