Blazers interested in Spencer Hawes

He's a player that they hardly run any plays for. He's there to crash the board, play D and generally get the hell out of Al Jefferson's way. He would be a good compliment to LA in that respect.

Yeah he's so good at crashing the boards he averaged as much as a shooting guard.

Did you happen to catch the video on the bottom of that page? Where are they now- (Baby Jordan-Harold Minor) It is pretty good.

I watched that. The year he was drafted, the draft was held in Portland, which I attended with a friend. My friend was pissed his Atlanta Hawks did't take "Baby Jordan" iirc they took Adam Keefe instead.

Dude averaged 10/5 per 36 as a starter on the season. I mean Holy shit, stats aren't everything but if he could barely produce as a starter I can't imagine what he could do as a bench player.

I think the 4 assists per game are somewhat meaningful. I'd rather have those than 1 assist and another 6 points per game (16/5). Hockey assists don't show up in stats but I'm sure he got quite a few of those too.

10/5 is meh, but 10/5/4 is mini Batum.
Except he's a power forward, and expected to play behind our star. His role is going to be even more limited here. We don't need his passing, we need a bruiser at the backup 4, which we already have in TRob.

I think it would be nice if Spencer Hawes came to the Blazers and made his 3 pointers and passed it inside for the occasional JAM. You gotta hit 3 pointers because they are worth 3 points!

If McBob is our big off season catch, I'm going to be depressed.

If we can't get Hawes or Monroe we should just stick with TRob and Freeland. Maybe Channing.

I agree to a large extent but we would stay extremely flexible. He may sign a one year max MLE deal or something like that. A combo of him and T-Rob would be very complimentary off the bench and a lot of athleticism if nothing else. I do think he'd be an upgrade to Freeland or Leonard. And we could more or less run the offense through him instead of Mo, which may run a lot smoother.

I was rooting for the Blazers to draft McRoberts at the draft party -- and they did. As I recall, word was he wasn't terribly focused or mature in his approach to the NBA, basically just wanted to dunk a lot, so the Blazers let him go. It took him a while but he managed to stay in the league long enough to get good enough that now a lot of fans would like to have him coming off our bench. Now he's known for 'toughness' and defense. I never expected that. He's decent, but after all this talk about trading for Monroe or Hawes, it's hard to get too excited about a guy the Blazers couldn't wait to get rid of a few years ago.

We simply didn't have minutes for McRoberts back then. We do now.

I agree a McBob offseason would be a letdown. But if we strike out on all the good MLE free agents then getting him on a one year max MLE deal is fine with me. It would be important to roll over that salary flexibility to next summer.

I'm surprised there hasn't been mention of Collision getting a raise anywhere. If either the Hawes or Monroe deals don't happen I'd love to have Collision take Mo's place.

Say no to mcbob. Say yes to Frye

Say no to both...

Whats with everybody's fascination with retreads this offseason?

McRoberts, Frye, Blake, Mills.....Shit even Telfair....
Don't forget Martell before the back.

I think a lot of blazer fans don't watch any players for other teams.

There's another group of fans who kind of see the grass as always greener someplace else.

Frye... Blake.... Mills..... haven't you noticed a trend? They're all guys that liked playing here. Our fans have a desire to be wanted. That's why some fans are still so bitter towards Oden.

Hawes' defense against Dwight Howard. Though just a highlight out of thousands of clips where his defense wasn't great but this shows his defensive potential.

Watching that video it's obvious that at least he's not soft.

He might not be a great defender but he's willing. Defense is a team effort anyway, so if he can play smart defense, he can be effective.

I have been thinking about this lately. I think it is a lot easier teaching most smart players with offensive skills how to play effective team defense, then it is to teach a good shot blocker with poor offensive skills how to shoot well enough to keep the other team from cheating off of him.

It does not help your team if you have a defensive player on the floor that you can't pass the ball to in crucial times during a game. Load up the team with as many smart, skilled, athletic players as you can and implement a solid team defense strategy.

Also the regrettable thread about Crawford... :smiley-puke:

Although I would be down with bringing Frye back, just not for MLE money like he's probably expecting.

Because people are dumb, and those that are not dumb probably realize that is the all we can get.

Free agent center Spencer Hawes is visiting with the #Suns later today.

Big contract offer inc.

Yep . . . for the Blazers to be competitive with an MLE, they need to let the teams with salary cap burn it all. I know it's debatable, but I think when it comes down to teams with just the MLEs left, the Blazers can be competitive. Question is what players will be left?

Not much in this free agent class. I guess we're stuck with retreads.

Well there better be a decent backup PG left, because if Blazers don't resign Mo, whoever the Blazers get as a backup PG will be getting a decent amount of PT next year. I don't see CJ or Will being able to take the pressure off Lillard with their ball handling.

Last year it was hard to take Lopez out of the game. I hope this year it won't be hard to take pressure off Lillard always having to handle the ball.

The way I see it, the Blazers are in a bit of a bind. I think they want Hawes and he doesn't want to settle for less money than he's been making last year. That means a S&T is the only route forward. In order to get the Cavaliers to play ball they have to have at least the threat of Hawes leaving for the MLE on the table. That means we can't firm up any other MLE deals until this thing is wrapped up.

At a sports bar in Ohio yesterday, there's a big electronic ticker that said Hawes was very interested in playing for us. When will we get news that the deal is done??

The July moratorium runs through the 10th, but I guess a deal could be announced any time. It's going to take a package that's interesting enough to the Cavs to get them to bite.

He has said he wants 8m per and the blazers can only offer 5.3m. A sign and trade is the only option, so the blazers are at the mercy of the Cavs' off season plans at this point. Unless Hawes REALLY wants to play for the blazers I wouldn't expect an announcement anytime soon. Even so I've still been checking twitter and hoopshype constantly. LOL

Don't forget that Hawes is currently a $9.9M cap hold for Cleveland. If the Cavs want to use their cap space on some FA, they'll have to renounce Hawes, meaning they won't be able to S&T him to anybody for more than the MLE, because they'll no longer have the exception necessary to do so.
