Blazers making offer to Kanter

Yeah indy was going to match, so we didn't bother. That was why falk praised Olshey. Didn't make them go through the process, and he got bigger raises

I wonder why the Kanter situation is different then. I mean, Presti is claiming he will match as well, no?

No team is going into a negotiation process with an RFA and saying "we won't match".

Of course they will say they'll match. Whether or not they actually do it is to be seen.

I still think they match though.

Yeah I realize that I just wonder why we believed indiana and not OKC

Indy went through Falk and Hibbert and told them straight up they would match, then offered him a contract.

Presti hasn't done anything except say to the media that they will match.

OKC is a division rival. Screwing with their cap space is a lot better tactic than screwing an eastern conf team

Because at the time Hibbert was the defensive darling of the NBA to many people, and many people didn't even question whether or not he was worth the max - especially to a young IND team that almost made the Finals. Nobody views Kanter the same way Hibbert was viewed.

Difference is INDY gave Hibbert exactly what we were going to sign him for, trade kicker and all. OKC says they will match but they didn't go to Kanter and say he, just don't sign with POR and we will match all the particulars of the contract that they were giving you. Basically OKC hasn't got approval (yet) from ownership to match even though they say they are going to. So they maybe 99% matching but they aren't 100% like INDY was.

OKC needs the time to unload some contracts before they match. I imagine if they can't do it they would consider not matching.

It could be a negotiating plow as well. Sunday should be interesting

Do they have to do that now? or can they wait until the season starts?

I remember it differently then. I don't remember it being so unanimous.

Technically they could wait a while but by that point all other teams might use up their cap space. They are looking at trading them to a team that doesn't send any players back.

Weren't most of the other teams cheering when we did this? Wouldn't it be hilarious if none of them helped them out by taking on their players?

Don't see why any western conference contender would.

They can wait, if they want. But the sooner they get to the season starting the less likely they find a deal to unload players for nothing.

Matching Kanter essentially means they have to do it, or eat the huge tax bill. This significantly hurts their negotiating power with other teams, and I suspect a team with cap can make them bend over backwards to unload some guys.

I really don't see any team willing to take Novak, Augustin, and PJIII without some other incentives (1st round picks?) coming back. Maybe Philly. Remember, OKC gave up Jackson and a late first for Kanter. If they use another pick to unload contracts essentially they traded Jackson and two firsts for Kanter.

Well, I wouldn't say unanimous - I, for one, did not think Hibbert was a MAX player, but I also understood that would have been the only way we could have gotten him. From a fan's perspective I think there was more disagreement, but from a league POV it seemed like a majority had fallen for Hibbert. But perhaps I'm misremembering.

Hahaha it would be freaken hilarious if they traded The Blazers Ibaka for a Maxed Kanter

But the bottom line is....not unloading them in the next two days will not be an indicator whether or not they are matching. Their inactivity will mean nothing. That is what I was wondering about. He has time to be creative.

I'm guessing Indiana actually showed him the money, whereas OKC showed Kanter less money than we did. Now they have to put up or shut up.

MM's brilliant idea 137.0

Would OKC let Kanter go for Kaman? He is a quality vet big, saves them $$$$, and fits win now model for them, lets them keep their depth

How is this possible? Unless you mean circumventing the CBA?

Edit: late to the party, Denny already schooled y'all

I read somewhere yesterday that OKC offered Kanter 54mil for 4 years..if they match they're going to be paying a fortune in luxury tax

Right, but there are definite (and real) advantages to unloading them within this 3 day period.

It really came down to Olshey going after the best free agent on the table which is exactly what he said he'd do. Talent acquisition for future assets whether you trade them or not. Greg Monroe was first and he's no elite defender by any stretch. The options left after Kanter were Boozer, Mbah Moute, maybe Drew Gooden..Luke Babbit..it's not a pretty sight after that. If OKC matches, it's a smart move to bottle up their cap space.

Whether OKC matches or not, I'm pretty sure Olshey already has some trades lined up. He's not just sitting around waiting for the decision.
