Well I expected this to happen but I'm still happy to hear the news, you never know.
When the new CBA is agreed on it'll be interesting to see how it effects the future direction of this team and Oden’s contract. If there is an amnesty provision this team could get out of Roy's contract so I think we'd be less willing to lockup Oden long-term as that would hinder our salary flexibility. Conversely if there is no amnesty, we could be stuck with Roy’s contract so having Oden on a big deal until Roy’s expiries may not hinder the team’s ability to add additional talent. If there is a hard cap we may be less willing to give Greg multiple years or large dollars. But if there is a provision to cut underperforming players from your cap that we could use on Greg down the road the team could roll the dice with him on a fat contract.
Maybe the team pushes Oden towards a one year deal so they can review a complete roster overhaul in summer of 2012 when Felton, Camby, Batum and possibly Wallace are free agents. Maybe there is a franchise player provision which would guarantee we’d be able to keep Oden if we so choose when he becomes an UFA. Then we'd have no fear of losing him, which I think is a driving force towards lots of fans hoping he gets a multi-year deal and even a max deal.
Very interesting indeed.
