Sterling signed an agreement that allowed the NBA to take away control of his team that they would then sell it in his name if he violated its bylaws. Sterling created real controversy and hurt the leagues image regardless if the recording was legally obtained or not. Not only that Players were planning on boycotting the playoffs and a lot of the sponsors had already pulled out from the Clippers.

The NBA didn't take anything. Mrs Sterling sold the franchise before the NBA owners could even vote to do anything. I think she might have even made a small profit doing it.
