Zombie Blazers Pursuing Pau Gasol

If Pau really wanted to come to Portland he accepts that 2/40 deal in a heartbeat (assuming that is the real deal offered). The fact it's been a couple days and he hasn't accepted says a lot.

He's waiting for other moves to go down. Portland is probably option 3 or so

That is just a LOT of money for a 36 year old center (36 on Wednesday) on a 2-year deal. Aldrich for $7M a year seemed right up Olshey's bargain alley given he provides just what the Blazers need and would not need big minutes.

Will the last center available please turn out the lights when you get a deal?

This has to be a huge misconception. I can't see us actually offering Pau that much, 2y 30m I can see but making him the second highest paid Blazer at the age of 36 is nuts.

I guess Neal did all his bargain shopping last yr and it's "Hey big spender" time this yr!

I'm cool with renouncing Leonard, but I would hate to lose the other 2 plus Aminu or Davis for a 36 year old player.

I think if we lose Leonard and Crabbe, can hang on to Harkless hold and be close enough to get an average of 2/40

What is the lowest the first year can be in comparison to the second year?

As in, first year is 16 million, second year is 24, etc?

I'm not sure of the rule, but Asik was offered a backloaded deal at $5M/$5M/$15M. It cost the Bulls that to match, $8.33M/season for Houston when the Bulls didn't match.

A 2 year $40M deal is going to cost $20M.

Ideally, the Blazers could sign him to 4/$60M, or 3/$45M, so we don't have to lose two of the RFAs, or Aminu or Davis.

You’ve got to let go some of our young guys to clear the cap room for this old ass dude. And Gasol isn’t taking us to the promised land. So you sacrifice young talent for…what? A few more wins? What the hell is wrong with this organization

New rumor I'm hearing from my sources: Gasol is nearing a deal with GS, Neil is putting plan B into motion, and will offer Charlie Villanueva a 2 year 35 million dollar contract.

I agree, I'd rather just resign our guys, maybe try to get Sanders

God no, that ugly son of a bitch

I'm a bit perplexed by this too. I'd like to have Gasol, and he'd be a nice addition to the team, but it seems like the type of move you make when you think you're a contender.

It's almost like Portland has given up on free agency and just wants to take what they can get.

If Gasol signs with Golden State, I'd rather make no moves and lay low.

Is the cap expected to jump fairly largly again next year or the year after? I remember reports saying another 10-15m jump is expected but can't remember when. If its in 2 years this deal only makes sense if he NO wants capspace again in 2 years.

Cannot structure like the Asik deal since he is not a first or second year player.

Because of Pau's age, we cannot put years on the end without being charged more this year.

If we do sign Pau, someone has to go. There simply is not enough minutes.

Of note, Montero and Alexander are not guaranteed contracts.

I'm wondering if we could find a workable sign and trade, with Leonard, to keep Crabbe and Harkless still. BYC is triggered if we go to the cap or over on Meyers. With his current hold, as well as our others, but renouncing Kaman, Henderson, etc., we have 8 million in cap space. His hold being 7, theoreticaly, we can S&T him for 14 million somewhere, staying under the cap. We could take back that plus 5 million in a trade, which gets us to Pau's starting salary, in a 2/40 deal.
I feel I might be missing something on it, but just a thought.

Not guaranteed, but cutting them both only gets us 600K in space, due to roster spot holds if they're gone

He will either go with GS, SA or Toronto. Hell I bet the Clips jump in as well after they lost Cole.
If he was coming here, he would have already accepted the offer.

T-Wolves have made an aggressive two-year offer to Bulls free agent big man Pau Gasol to reunite him with coach Thibs, source said. Keep eye on Blazers & Spurs, too.

I said 3/45 or 4/60 for a reason. It gets him his $40M, and it's a $15M hit instead of $20M. Meaning we could clear enough space by renouncing one of Leonard or Mo. Instead of having to renounce both or trade others.

Then he would have also accepted Toronto and Minnys offer as well in that case. Which means it's between San Antonio and Golden State

We could cut one of them and get the full value plus one of either Leonard or Harkless.

We have eight players under contract. Add two of our restricted free agents plus Gasol would make eleven. Just need one of Alexander or Montero to make twelve.

And I said it was illegal for a reason. The cap charge on those additional years hits now, not later.
