Camera + NBA GM + alcohol + farm animals = 15th spot on the roster.

Mills would have played overseas this year so I doubt we signed him just to give him money... Hi agent would likely do that till he was healed anyway. If he were to go to Europe we wouldn't have signed him at all. By signing him we are committed to keeping him or forfeiting him. There is no signing him and not having him utilize a roster spot unless we waive him in which case we lose him altogether.
KP has no reason to sign him just to cut him 2 weeks later. I tend to always suspect trades and they never happen, so Im trying not to suspect a trade this time, but the parts of the equation seem to spell T R A D E.

I agree with something Nate (I think it was him) once said in that 'point guards are not made, they're born'. In other words, Bayless may have a lot of positive attributes, but being a PG isn't one of them and never will be. But Mills is a true PG. As such, he can learn a couple of years behind Miller and possibly take over as either our starting or back up PG. I like this move and hope we keep him to see how he pans out.
Bayless trade? Blake trade?
Here we go!
That would be my guess. Bayless trade this season and a wait-see on Blake for next season.
You never watched him play for St. Mary's did you? He's a short scoring guard just like Bayless.
Storyteller where are you when we need you!Why sign him to waive him? Why not just hold on to his rights for a year? Unless he won't play fo a calendar year.
We can't trade Miller until 12/15/09 at the earliest IIRC. I suspect a consolidation trade (PLEASE GOD LET IT BE FOR CONLEY!) involving some of the following: Bayless, Martell, Przybilla, Outlaw, Fernandez, Blake, Pendergraph and Cunningham. My guess would be it's Miller and one of our starters for a much better PG.

You could even do something super epic like this.
I expect something alot simpler if a trade occurs though. This would shore up the PG spot and get rid of the glut of guys who needs shots. We also get a great back up F/C in Gasol.

Right and Hollinger's predictions hold up oh so well. I'm sure adding Miller and dropping Frye/Sergio was plus 7 wins or so. Thus far the board seems to think we will implode (and by the board I mean about three or four vocal minority types). I was just trying to send Joel home and Blake with him while getting rid of guys who need shots in Rudy, Bayless and Outlaw while bringing us back potential future PG's (Flynn and Conley) and a decent backup big in Gasol. I'm sure my trade would never happen, you can't solve all your problems in one move...except on ESPN trade machine!"Hollinger's analysis" of proposed trade: -5 wins.![]()
Trail Blazers notes: Patty Mills signing explained

So it looks like Mills forced their hand, probably in the expectation he will become a free agent, and able to compete for some team not so deep. I would be really surprised if the Blazers don't waive him.
Had Mills declined to sign the contract, the Blazers would have retained his rights and he could have attempted to make the Blazers’ regular season roster next season.
I'd like to see what mills can do on this team. Anyone know how good his perimeter d is?
Random ot. Is the game televised tonight? I'm in Vegas and would like to catch it if I can
I read it as they were doing him a favor, by signing him to the non guaranteed contract and eventually waiving him/picking him for the 15th spot, he's free to get some PT elsewhere once his foot heals and not stuck in a 4PG rotation.
Mills is 5'11" to 6'0" ... it doesn't matter how much "scrappy do" he's got in him I don't think you would ever be able to think of him as a defender; he's slightly built, he built his college career on speed on the offensive end of the court and guys are always going to be able to either post him up or shoot over the top of him.

Why even offer him then? Just give up his rights and find the next Andre Miller.
I believe they offered him because that was the only chance they had to keep control of him as an asset; IF they were able to persuade him not to sign, but to go over to Europe for a year.

Interesting, I had no idea that the team was required to offer a contract to 2nd round draft picks. Looking at the Coon FAQ, it does appear to be true. It also seems to be the case that the deadline for offering the contract was Sept 6th, so apparently Mills sat on the offer for at least several weeks before deciding to sign it.
