Blazers sign Ronnie Price

Even though we signed him we can't be worse than Sacramento or Minny?

Huh wut? How does one thing have anything to do with the other?

Price is almost never going to play -- or if he does end up playing a lot, it means something has gone terribly, terribly wrong.

Let's admit it. Olshey is a Clipper. He knows only one way to think. Suck, draft early, see the star leave when his contract ends, repeat. Keep swinging for the fences instead of patiently and incrementally adding good but not great players. It's the dream of every Clipper.

Speaking of which, where did their star draft of Blake Griffin end up? I bet he went REAL far away now that he can leave and play on a better team, right!?

Apparently he has a second year as a player option. That makes this a terrible signing; he should be a pure vet minimum guy. If we cut him he'll suck up $1 million of cap space next season. He is an older player that will never be a difference maker. I'm fine with giving him a one year deal but this was a stupid move since we lost both salary and roster flexibility. Look at Minnesota, they had to give up two second round picks to clear up about $1 million in cap space. Yes the second year of Price’s deal is a minor loss, but it is potentially a loss paired with zero upside.

Zero upside, indeed. What other team was bidding for his services? It would surprise me if other NBA teams were willing to give him that...

Thanks for the info. Good post and agree with everything you said.

He's got a Utah connection, FWIW.

Ahh Haa

Lillard is held in such high regard by Portland management, general manager Neil Olshey signed veteran point guard Ronnie Price — who played at Utah Valley State and with the Utah Jazz — on Wednesday. Lillard and Price have been pals the past three years.
“I got to know him, and we developed a relationship,” Lillard said. “Ronnie would tell me how to take care of my body, some things to work on, not to overwork myself. He was kind of like a mentor for me.
“He’ll bring toughness to our team. He’s a competitor. I’m not sure what their plans are for him, but I know I’ll get better going against him every day in practice. And once he gets in the game, he’ll be ready. I’m excited about it.”

Ronnie Price was among the worst PGs last season, ranking 323rd in PER, just behind Steve Blake but ahead of Fisher. #ripcity #blazers

Didn't Steve Blake and Fisher both play in the playoffs last year? Price ranks in between them so........maybe not so bad.

I am not sure I like this move. Why do we need him? Lillard, Smith and Barton are fine. And all better than Price. And Price cannot teach our young guys anything. Because he is a nobody!

I dunno ...

I thought Ronnie Price was the best Blazers PG in the first half against the Lakers. Easily. He looks like a very solid pickup.

Which is good because we are suddenly scary thin at guard.

That's about right. He's adequate, like a Blake or a Fisher, but Olshey could have gotten a much better guard. When Olshey filled the crucial spot behind our foul-prone rookie PG with Price, I began saying that Olshey thinks like a Clipper (the eternal losers, not the recent winners).

after 1 game we've already declared Lillard foul prone?

I'm not sure where you get this characterization of Olshey as an eternal loser. During the time he was the Clippers GM, they went 48-36. He was the one that pulled off the Chris Paul trade, signed Chauncey Billups and Caron Butler etc. Doesn't sound like an eternal loser to me.

Straw man false premise again. I said that Olshey has the Clipper mindset (ingrained from working for them for a decade). I didn't say that he made bad moves in his last year there (after Stern's decisions lucked him into getting Chris Paul).
