The Trail Blazers have extended the contract of ambassador Bill Schonely for three more seasons, team president and CEO Chris McGowan announced Friday.

The team's founding broadcaster who coined the term "Rip City," Schonely called games from 1970-1998, serving as play-by-play voice for more than 2,500 Blazers games. In 2013-14, he enters his 10th season as team ambassador and 44th season with the Blazers overall.

He was honored with the Curt Gowdy Media Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

“I’m thrilled that the organization has included me in its future plans,” Schonely said in a statement. “I’ve been here a long time, enjoyed every moment, and I look forward to exciting things in the future for this franchise. As they say, ‘You’ve got to make your free throws.’ And I think the Trail Blazers will do exactly that.”

As a team ambassador, Schonely makes appearances in fan, sponsor and community initiatives.

Is Schonz the greatest Blazer ever? There have been great players and great personalities that have come and gone, but for the most part Schonz is a true Blazer that (except for a few years) has always been with the organization.

Not a big fan of how schonz has been a dick to my man wheels

I disagree. Schonz comes off as a butthurt bitter old man

Old timers get cranky if they don't get their naps in.

BTW, what examples do you have of him not liking Wheels. I've heard this before but never heard facts.
