When someone tops 7', do we really need to quibble over a half inch or so?

I keep going back to right after the lottery this year. Everyone's bummed that we dropped to the 7th pick. Then, I come in and tell you that in the future, the player we draft at 7...
  • led summer league in blocked shots/game (4 games).
  • led the summer league in rebounding/game.
  • Did this without being in the top 50 in summer league mpg (this year).
  • Got more blocks per game than anyone in summer league history!
  • Played against the 6th pick, and was obviously way, way better.
  • Played against the #2 pick who was many people's highest ranked player, and completely destroyed him.
  • Acts like a quarterback on defense, and the team defense is MUCH better when he plays (again, in summer league).
  • Doesn't care about individual accolades, team first, team last.
  • Is definitely a work in progress as a 3 point shooter, but he's working on it consistently, and has good form.
You'd go ape shit, just like I'm doing right now....

He played against himself?

Dear Washington GM,
You guys are more built for "win-now" with Kuze and the Poole Party, and your rookie, Sarr sucks, and will not help you any time soon.

However, if we trade you Grant for Sarr.....

How does anyone care what any player does in summer league? The competition sucks.

You could say that about all the basketball games players play until they're in regular season NBA games.

Clingan is also the only player in summer league history to be top 10 in both blocks and rebounds.

edit: I phrased this poorly. There is only one player to be top 10 all time in summer league blocks and rebounding. That player is CK.

Looking at the NBA regular season, this Reddit post below is from 6 years ago. I checked, and nobody has led the league in blocks and rebounds per game since 2010.

(Last season, Victor Wembanyama was 1st in the league in blocks per game, and 8th in rebounds per game. Anthony Davis had the highest average rank of 2.5th, being 1st in rebounding and 4th in blocks per game. Rudy Gobert averaged 4th, 2nd in blocks and 6th in rebounds. Wembanyama followed averaging 4.5th place. )

Players Simultaneously Leading the League in Rebounds and Blocks Per Game
Simultaneous Rebounding and Blocks Champions
  • 1976 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

  • 1977 - Bill Walton

  • 1990 - Hakeem Olajuwon

  • 2002 - Ben Wallace

  • 2009 - Dwight Howard

  • 2010 - Dwight Howard
Since the award was introduced in 1983, Hakeem Olajuwon in 1990 is the only player to not win Defensive Player of the Year as the simultaneous rebounding and blocks champion.

This post is not in any way a comment on Donovan Clingan. I was curious how often there is a player who leads the league in blocks and rebounds per game for an entire season. The answer is, it doesn't happen very often.

If Victor Wembanyama ever plays 35 minutes per game, he could do it.

Wembanyama is the best Center since Hakeem.

"Olajuwon was a back-to-back winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1992-93 and 1993-94 and was named All-Defensive First Team five times and Second Team four times. He is the NBA’s all-time leader in blocks (3,830) while ranking ninth in steals (2,162) and 14th in rebounding (13,748). Steals and blocks became official NBA statistics in 1973-74.

Olajuwon is the only player in NBA history who is ranked top-10 in both categories. He has 774 more steals than any other center in league history. Olajuwon has 541 more blocks than the second ranked player, former Rocket Dikembe Mutombo, and would still be the all-time leader in blocks if he never played his final five seasons. Only five players have recorded more than 3,000 career blocks and no current player has reached 1,800."

But those same “optimistic fans” are the ones that take things that happen in meaningless summer or pre season games and apply it to the regular season with unrealistic expectations…..then we have to read EVERY SINGLE FUCKING GAME how horrible we are and they need to fire somebody and trade somebody……..for SIX month we have to deal with that.

Hey, we have to deal with YOU, so you can deal with it.

Simple solution: don't read the game threads.

I understand your point about summer league not meaning anything. Very true that a great performance in summer league does not guarantee any success in the regular season, and vice versa.

With that said, most of us here in this forum are fans. I watch the games to be entertained. Not every game has to mean something for it to be entertaining.

Watching the game the other night with my son, I must say that was the first time in a long time we were entertained by a ‘Blazer’ game. Every block Clingan got we were cheering. Every dunk he got we were excited.

That’s what it’s all about for me. Even if the game doesn’t mean anything, I still was excited that Clingan was on pace for a triple-double at halftime.

I’m looking forward to the meaningless game this evening. Go Clingan!
