Blazers threaten the rest of the NBA [merged]

I think they did this because Boston and Memphis have eaten up 8 of the 10 games. So if a team is thinking "sweet, we can just sign him for 4 games, and then waive him and Portland will be stuck with the bill!", the Blazers are like "um, we're not against you guys signing Darius, but it better be for reasons other then screwing us over. "

That's all this is, and the "woah, thats a bitchy move by the Blazers" mindset seems to be missing that simple concept.

No I didn't miss that concept, but its a pussy move. You threaten them with a lawsuit when they play them 2 minutes in 2 games and then sit their ass on the bench for the rest of the season. It was fucking lame, and now we'll pay for it with the next trade we try and make or free agent we try to sign. If you think that players around the league won't look at this as a slight at Miles (even though it wasn't) I think your in for a suprise. Right or wrong, their going to side with Miles and the whole situation makes the Blazers management look bad. They put themselves in this mess, (Allen particularly with his stupid fucking man crush on Miles, or we wouldn't even be talking about this) and now their acting like little whiny bitches. You take legal action AFTER something happens where you have recourse. Way to show the fucking cards early, dumbasses, and also come off like a bunch of complete pricks.

They might see it as a 'slight', but also see that signing with Portland provides them with a really solid chance at winning a title (or more) and I bet they'll be like "pfft..that Darius thing? who gives a fuck. Guy got paid 9 million for doing nothing"

i think we're fucked guys. because of this, if the lakers signed him and played him during the last second of two games and then cut him, I don't think we could do shit about it. let's just kiss that cap room goodbye now.

Well that email was real effective . . . the day it comes out, Miles gets signed.

And if the griz didn't do it today, some other team would do it tomorrow. You don't threaten people in position of power or people with money and big egos . . . it's the wrong call.

Or, you put your legal intentions in print, and deal with the aftermath in court. The Blazers were obviously tipped that this was going to happen. Memphis basically just took $9 million from Paul Allen via a loophole, and Paul Allen will now try to ruin Michael Heisley by suing him and dragging it out for years. It's a business, after all.

That's my guess. The NBA needs to make a decision on this yesterday or things are going to get brutal.

The decision-making has been done.

The Grizzlies are acting appropriately, legally, and acceptably.

Paul Allen "ruining" anyone over this (or trying to) is ridiculous.

AgreeThe Blazers need to just take this with a 9mil grain of salt and take the hit. There are absolutly no grounds to sue over a free-agent being signed.

I don't see anything wrong with the signing...why would the Grizzlies want to commit a season long contract to a player when they couldn't even use him for the first part due to the suspension...they had to pay Miles that part of his contract even though they knew there wasn't enough time to asses his contributions on the court since as soon as he was eligible to play his interm contract was almost up. With a 10 day contract that isn't technically cut short by the suspension they can see how he works on the court. it wasn't like he was getting 1min and then pulled...in some games he was play double digit minutes. So when I see people complaining it's just whining over the fact the Blazers are missing out on cap space.

It is what it is...they cut him and now have to live with the situation at hand...there is no wrong doing and they just need to plan accordingly. The only thing that was done wrong was making the statement of sueing...all that does is put them in a bad light with the players and other teams....how many teams do you think will fall over themselves to make deals with a team that issued threats over a player they cut but don't want anyone else to sign? Because it will hurt thier cap space! I'm not saying no one will deal with Portland...but it could have some teams thinking twice.

Portland should have just bit thier tongue and waited for the situation to unfold...and if happened like that...they make a comment (or continue to say nothing). No reason to lower yourself to another teams level if it comes out like that....be classy and it would've looked better for the orginization and many more people would be backing the Blazers instead of pointing fingers at a reaction threat that doesn't even hold water....other than just drawing money in court process you know you can't win. All that proves is that you we're wrong for making the threat just to make it and your stubborn...lol. Sure you'd draw thier money in court, but it doesn't change the views of everyone else looking on....if anything it just looks worse

I think the last couple posts hit the nail on the head. The Blazers are pretty much screwed.

That being said, I think it's a relatively crummy provision in the CBA (the 10 game clause) and its application isn't really consistent with the general intent of the CBA, which is to avoid messes like this. Hence, I think the fair thing would be for the NBAPA and NBA to let it go for the Blazers and agree to an amendment of the CBA for that provision.

I wouldn't hold my breath though.

I see what your saying...they have to take the hit on this one since thier isn't a clear cut rule against this situation....Everyone needs to just get together and iron out something before next season to prevent this from happening again.

What's done is done....let's fix it for the future.

This will be interesting to see if Portland is gonna make deals to stay under the luxury tax or take the hit this season and let Raef's contract just drop off to make up the difference for next season.

Yeah, and the bad thing about this whole email fiasco is it doesn't exactly make the rest of the league want to go out of its way to help the Blazers.

I think we are just stuck wit the MIles situation, Now I wonder if we didn't piss off the NBA and don't get fined or penalized for the threatenning email. I assume Tom Penn knows what he is doing and things could work out with no penalty and still having cap space but right now it does not look good for the Blazers in IMO.

Yup, I added something similar to that my post earlier. I don't see many teams jumping to make deals with them...nobody takes threats without backing very well. They kinda backed themselves into a corner when it comes to future endevors and current support on thier situation

I don't see any reason for the Blazers to get cap space back...this isn't like a stipulation they didn't know about....sure it sucks....but it was a known issue. No one made them release Miles and that was just an unfortunate clause in the contract. They just need to plan accordingly

They should hope they don't get sued for the comment as some can view it as impeading on Miles right to find employment. Which might be a stretch...but it faintly holds water. But I don't see that as much of an issue since he already got signed.

LOL 'don't sign this free agent, or we will sue'.

Portland did not say that at all, if people would open there eyes it was only based on if you sign him maliciously and only to play him the 10 games and release to get Paul's money. The more I read, the more I am on the Blazers side especially after the Grizz re-signed miles to a 10 day again after releasing him.

Even if it is 'malicious' on Memphis's end, tough shit. The Blazers are competition for the Grizzlies as far as trying to sign free agents go, and if the Grizzlies want to hamper their competition, they can do that. Portland needs to shut up about other teams signing a player that they released.

Memphis needs to get a team on the floor, and fast. They know that Portland is a far more appealing destination for free agents and that they (the Grizzlies) will lose that battle every time.

Business sucks.

I think this season's potential cap room is definitely a sub text to this whole drama, but I really do believe the main objection was to this intent to put the Blazers back into the luxury tax by nine million. Regardless, I think the letter was more bark than bite and likely nothing will be pursued as far as litigation is concerned.

What a stupid, sordid mess. :sigh:

people saying this is costing PA 9 million are short sighted of the fact that with salary cap and luxury tax ramifications, the next 5 minutes or so of darius' time on the court could cost pa WELL OVER 30 MILLION DOLLARS. not that he cant afford it but damn.
