Blazers trade for Afflalo and Alonzo Gee

It really doesn't matter what the salary cap does, if this team loses in the 1st round tough choices have to be made. If the team loses in the 2nd round choices still have to be made just not as drastic. If this team makes the WCFs or NBA finals you bring everyone back.

Only worry about the salary cap until after the playoffs are over because we don't know what direction(s) we have to go in during the offseason.

Out of all our core guys, the only one I could see leaving would be Wes. Especially if Afflalo turns out to be as good as he was in Orlando. I don't see any way we let Rolo leave, and I think he likes it here. LA will get a max deal. I'm hoping Afflalo doesn't opt out and we can just hold onto him.

Wes is the heart and soul of this team, we need to keep him.

If someone throws him a huge contract, and either Afflalo doesn't opt out or is willing to sign for less, I could see us not bringing him back.

I just can't see us maxing him.

We have the bird rights on all these guys. We can go over the cap. It would just cost Paul a lot of cash.
if we do well in the playoffs he might pay the tax for one year as we will have a huge increase in the cap the following tear when the big TV new TV contract kicks in

Okay so I've had a little time to think about how Afflalo will effect this team.
I think the biggest impact he will have is defensively, and rest of Wesley.
Wesley did a great job in making Harden in the playoffs take tough shots.. Being physical with him.
However Wesley suffered offensively.
He shot sub 32% from 3 in 11 playoff games. 22 makes 68 shots.
In the regular season he shot his consistent 39%. That's a pretty big drop off for someone who is the #3 option on the Blazers.
Wesley will never admit it but chasing Harden for 3 1/2 quarters then letting Batum do the last 6 minutes of the game.. Tired him out.
Wesley is a beast but Afflalo will help him the most because it won't all be on Wesley to chase guys like Harden.

Wes + Batum are excellent on ball defenders. If Afflalo can add to that.... Then that's three excellent perimeter defenders.
Lillard has improved his defense... Won't say he's excellent yet.. But he's not playing matador defense anymore.

If Afflalo can bring Wes' workload down a little. Wes is surely going to shoot better than 32% from 3 in the playoffs this year.
High hopes for Afflalo.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't imagine how frustrating it will be for wings to face our 3 headed defensive monster

I think Afflalo is actually a better defender than Wes, and i really like wes

Great trade. The two guys I wanted the Blazers to target were Jeff Green and Arron Afflalo.
Happy that one of them is suiting up in a Blazers uniform this weekend.

Best thing about this trade, outside of the obvious physical talents of Afflalo and Gee, is the intangibles.
We traded prob the two lowest IQ guys on the roster, Will and TRob, and have replaced them with guys that not only have BBall IQ but, I think, will mesh off the court with the players.
We lose two self-orientated players and gain both Afflalo and Gee, who seem like mature, tough competitors - and that is going to be healthy for the team environment going forward.

Sad to see Vic go - hope he does well wherever he may land.

Did Wilson chandler get dealt? Guess nobody ponied up that #1 they wanted.

So depth chart now is:

Rolo/Kaman/Joel
LMA/Meyers/Wright
Batum/Gee/Crabbe
Wes/Afflalo/CJ
Dam/Blake

I'm very excited about the trade.

I think it's a great deal too! I've been wanting the Blazers to get Afflalo. This is easily the best bench we've had since 2000. I think Joel should be passing Kaman though for backup C. Batum also needs to have his minutes cut big time to make way for Afflalo.

He's got such a great contract to trade on draft day. I bet they get a good pickfor him or one of theirs and Chandler for a much better pick

On a positive note, Vic and Will will get to play in Denver. TRob is looking for a buyout so he must have a plan B.

Wilson was the one that could D it up though, no?

Denver as a team doesn't play much defense this year.
Orlando defensive numbers are a better indicator as to the quality of defender Afflalo is.

Afflalo fit more of our needs. I'd rather have a guy who can play offense on the 2nd unit than D.

Plus, Afflalo is an average to slightly above average defender.

I mean, hello... 81 points in a half? (Or was it 84? Still...)

The point is he can do both while many in here was implying he was one dimensional :)

This.

Also Denver has gave up what. 70+ 3 other times in a half not counting the Blazer game?
Something like that...
