I don't think we need to get too down about this. The only signed player who looked lost was Crabbe, and we're used to that. Everybody else both had their moments and had their bloopers. People are singing TRob's praises, but he still has hands of stone. And the Knicks' "steal" Cleanthony Early looked totally pedestrian. I'm kind of pleasantly surprised Larkin didn't go off on us, because we don't really have anyone designed to stop waterbugs.

We have more draftees than other teams, so we're supposed to be better. But I have come to learn that non-draftees play harder. It's like watching "Desperate Women."

I thought Barton played quite well. He didn't shoot it great but was 1-2 from 3pt range for 11 points to go with his 7 rebounds and what should have been 6-8 assists. Multiple times he set up his teammates perfectly only to have them miss chippies, wide-open jumpers or simply fumble the ball away.

If he was playing with the regular roster, he would have been nearing triple/double range.

Crabbe looked awful and can't believe how much CJ bricked it up from the FT line. Thought he was supposed to be a shooter.

Nice game from T-Rob other than the turnovers, a couple of which would have been assists for Barton if he holds on to the ball. Quite impressed by Will being under control and making a lot of the right decisions even if there wasn't the desired result.

:matrix:

Barton played OK but he certainly did not make me think he could play PG. The way it looks right now after only one summer league game, is we have one too may SG's on this team and we are short one PG.

CJ, Barton, Crabbe.........all SG's. One will have to go in order to get a 3rd PG on this roster.

Crabbe is really bad. I just wish he would show something....anything.

We need to see if he can attack the basket at any capacity. Maybe not all the way to the rim, but at least into the lane and finish.
I seem to remember he was good at it in college.

Mo is looking better and better as the summer league progresses

Not really. He's too short to play shooting guard, and he's a horrible defender. We have guys that can play. Will, Wright, and CJ could all log minutes. Hell, I would rather see Claver in the lineup over Mo.

Now that PapaG's not here to defend Aldridge against all comparisons to PFs, you have inherited the mantle to defend comparisons of Mo vs. those defensive stalwarts Crabbe, McCollum, and Barton.

I wish Olshey could sell Mo on playing behind Blake with a front loaded contract and a buyout 2nd yr.

A back court rotation of Lillard, Wes, Blake and Mo with sprinkles of Barton and CJ would be strong, IMO.

But fact Blake has Mo's number tells me Blazers aren't looking to bring Mo back

I was at the game this afternoon. Here is my take:

Leonard - He didn't play, but he was working out an hour before the game & was looking really good. He is one BIG dude. Its easy to forget how big these guys are when watching on TV. Meyers was working the post. I think he is going to put it all together eventually.

CJ - He looks about 10 pounds lighter to me and a little stronger. My big complaint last year was that he wasn't quick enough to get to the basket. He looks quicker. Unfortunaltely, he got his first 4 drive attempts bocked. After that, he started kicking the ball out & then settled down a bit. He needs to be a "dead eye" shooter, and I am not sure he get there, I would give him a C+ on O and a B+ on D. He gets a solid B for today.

Freeland - Solid, but not spectacular. Had one nice drop step move, but didn't make a whole lot of plays that stood out to me. I his growth curve is close to the end (with his age), I personally would look to trade him with the Kaman signing. Today he gets a C or C-.

TRob - He played really agressively & hard. He played to his strengths. He did have a couple of major blunders (turn overs under the basket & missed easy shots). All & all, Ii was happy with what I saw. He gets a B+ today.

People's Champ - Was a little bit of a ball hog & out of control, but he plays agressively & makes things happen. IMO he was the best Blazer today. He gets an A- today.

Crabbe - He looks like an NBA player, but doesn't do much of anything on the court. Struggles to play D without fouling. Supposedly he has a deadly shot, but I haven't seen it in live action. Today he gets a D. He gets a few more chances this week to prove he's an NBA player. Carney was better than Crabbe today, but that's not saying much...

Brown - I really liked what I saw out of Brown. He played good D & had 3-4 BEAUTIFUL assists. Didn't shoot the ball well. Not sure he is quite an NBA player, but worth a longer look. He gets a B- today.

Remaining Trailblazers - Brackin had a few nice moments, but that was it.

Knicks -
Hardaway can shoot & score. He's a nice bench player. Not sure I see him becoming much more than that.

The Greek - He had some nice moments & struuggled at others.

So Leonar_ looked great against no one

Everyone else that might play for us next year gets a decent grade.

LOL

ESPN Truehoop grade:
C.J. McCollum, Portland Trail Blazers | Grade: B
Even on an iffy shooting night (4-for-11), it’s easy to see why McCollum is a big-time scorer in the making. Rarely do you find a wing with this combination of size, shake and shooting ability, and perhaps more importantly, the smarts to use those skills and base an attack around threes and free throws. Making even your worst shooting nights palatable is an underrated aspect of being a quality scorer, and McCollum can do just that.

I hate judging guys on their first summer league game. It takes a couple of games for most players to shake the rust off. I want to see what happens in the next couple of games.

This is a good point. I've been more critical of Crabbe and CJ than any other roster players. I hope I'm wrong about these guys and they become assetts. CJ is well spoken, I think he'll be the next David Aldridge of sports media. He's a bright kid. Crabbe I watched play D league and I'm most pessimistic about him. I actually think Leonard will make a big leap in his development this season
