Breaking News: Blazers will not use Amnesty Clause on Brandon Roy

Holy cow this could be the worst decision the Blazers have made since passing on Durant!

If I recall right a few contracts are coming off the books next year and combine that with Roy and we'll be able to go after some FAs in a year that suppose have a lot of top rank FAs. So this doesn't surprise me and I expected it to happen. As I said you can't believe a word Crapzona says.

It's done. No reason to dwell on what if.

No reason to dwell on the what if?! Are you mad? you're taking away 95% of what this and every sports fan driven message boards thrive on!!

The only bball benefit from waiving him now would be the chance to sign a full MLE player

I'd argue there would be value in moving on with this team and not postponing the inevitable. We need to spend time developing talent, not living in the past.

I think it's prudent to give Roy one last shot. If he does not return to all-star level, they reallly should cut him though. He's a liability on defense.

Next offseason could be a huge for the Blazers! Amnesty Roy, Felton, Camby and Oden will be free agents. Wallace could opt out(though I don't think he will), and Batum will be up for his QO.

But if the Blazers wanted to make a run at a FA....

I put this in another thread, but I guess I'll post this where it belongs, LOL:

If Brandon wanted to bail on the Blazers and go ring shopping, this was his perfect opportunity. He could have 'not' sold himself to Larry, Curly and Mo, they could have chosen amnesty, he still would get paid and could sign for the minimum someplace else. The bazillion dollar man seems to want to play in Portland, and he wants to play to best of his ability. I've been pretty rough on Roy for certain aspects of his attitude (deservedly so in my opinion) over the last two years, but the guy did not just mail it in once he got his contract, even though the injuries gave him the perfect 'out'. I'll give him credit for that.

so....

Felton/Smith
Roy/Wes
Wallace/Batum
LA/Wallace
Camby/Oden/Johnson

yuck

That's not how it works for amnestied players. Other teams bid and Roy would get no choice in where he goes unless there are no bids. He would likely be playing for a team like the TWolves.

Even if somewhat healthy and Nate lets the players play without inhibitions, that is a .650 team (43 wins) easy, with a chance to get HCA.

The Blazers did very well last year after getting Wallace. Roy will be an upgrade over Fernandez. Hopfully Batum has improved. And if Oden can somehow stay healthy and return to his former form, the Blazers could actually be title contenders.

The reason we lost to Dallas was rebounding. We gave up a ton of offensive rebounds near the end of the game. That would not have happened with Oden.

If there was a player this year that they could get with the MLE by cutting Roy that could start, then I could understand the frustration by some. But I don't see who that difference maker is.

I think this is the safest and smartest choice. If it doesn't work out then it doesn't work out. But I just don't see how this hurts them in the future. To be honest signing the wrong guy to a 30 million MLE could hurt the future, not keeping Roy another year to see what happens.

Agreed!

So much for developing Elliot Williams.

There's going to be no time for him on the court, except for blowouts.

I like that lineup a lot... three years ago. Today that lineup is very mediocre.

You may be right but at least 4 of those players on that list are better now than 3 years ago.
(LMA, Wes, Batum, and Smith)

I'm conflicted about the amnesty decision but I don't think it will be a problem as far as Williams, at least for this season. He seems to be a super athlete who needs a lot of work on his basketball skills before he would get meaningful minutes on an NBA team.

And he has to take the contract they decide to give him or what not play? That doesn't seem right either.

$17 million for a guy who can only play 1 out of every 3 nights....

Ridiculous....

If we used the Amnesty Clause on him, he would've made even more money.

Huh? That's a great team. Once Oden is back, our opponents' centers won't be free to guard Aldridge anymore. With a healthy Oden, we beat the Mavs last year.

at what level of play are you assumimg for Roy? and Oden for that matter? to get those wins?

LOL that team is full of gazelles except the one guy that will dominate the ball more than anyone else. This is a huge failure by the "brain trust" at One Center Court to realize what pre-schoolers learn on a daily basis.

One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?

Did you guess which thing was not like the others?
Did you guess which thing just doesn't belong?
If you guessed this one is not like the others,
Then you're absolutely...right!

Add pryzbilla to our lineup and it's 3 really good players, 2 solid players, 3 fragile broken down players, an aging vet, and a bunch of rookies who have no experience. That is not a very impressive lineup.

With a healthy Oden, we beat the Mavs last year.

The Mavs handled Bynum & Perkins pretty well in the playoffs last year. I don't think they would have had much of a problem with Greg at this point in his career.

I still think the Blazers are just saying the right things in the media right now and still have every intention on waiving Roy once they see him not being able to perform on back-to-back days. The NBA still hasn't finalized the date in which the amnesty needs to be exercised either.

Paul Allen didn't push for the amnesty clause to not use it.

Not to mention we will now miss out on getting Landry or another post player like Hayes. LA cannot play as many minutes like last year, he wore down. Also what if he gets hurt. Complete fail by blazers brain trust. And for what? To keep a guy who will get cut next summer anyway?
