Of course this is solid proof of Russia just being a bullshit country, but this also highlights the gender pay-gap of professionals in the USA. Many professional WNBA players end up playing for foreign clubs in the off-season for the extra cash, whereas NBA players do not.

This doesn't excuse Russia, or even Griner's mistake, which wasn't hurting anyone else regardless. Just another thing to think about in context.

You should blame Americans for not supporting the WNBA then. If people actually cared about the WNBA, then players would be paid in relation to the general public's interest. As it stands, the league loses millions per year.

Griner's russian team was formed in 1938. seems like the owners are billionaires or russian oligarchs or some shit.

As far as NBA/WNBA pay equity, I would like to see a certain percentage of NBA salaries go into a WNBA pool. Of course, this decision would have to come from the players themselves. I would love to see their 2 respective player's unions sit down and work out something equitable for all.

Come on CJ. It's winning time. You going to pass the rock this time around, or go 1 on 3 and step on the baseline?
 
Don't fuck with other countries and their laws ... I'm all for working to bring BG back but only if it includes the other American's stuck over there for the same offense. That's not how this will work though, Griner will be home long before the others because she plays by different rules from the general public, but at the same time she doesn't play by the same rules that a Lebron would play by because she isn't as 'important.'

As for the difference in WNBA vs. NBA pay ... if you feel that strongly about it, go to more WNBA games, buy more WNBA merch, watch more WNBA games on TV and get your friends/family to do the same. They don't get paid the same because they don't deserve to be paid the more in an free market economy. I don't understand why this is so difficult for people to understand.

I feel sorry for her but I got to agree. I also get annoyed that people keep trying to turn this into a sexism issue when it is really a privilege issue. She expected to be able to get away with it, now she expects our country to come to her rescue. Meanwhile our own jails are full of people serving more time than her for marijuana, how do you think they feel when Joe Biden is doing everything he can to help Britney? Also as far as comparing her pay to NBA salaries, there are plenty of NBA players who have to play in other countries like china, or they choose to because their earning potential is much greater there. All that said and I still think we should do what we can to get her back, and I also think we should legalize marijuana and I think women should be paid more, but we live in the world we got.

Bingo. 10% of nba salaries would give the average WNBA player $1 million per year.

Or maybe the league and players could each offer 5%.

I agree that WNBA players should be paid more. But, isn't saying NBA players and money from the NBA should be pooled to pay women more offensive to independent women?

I'm not intending to ask in any bad ways. I'm honestly just curious.

I don't agree WNBA players should be paid more. They should be paid in relation to how much revenue the league brings in or how much they are actually worth. They should be able to be strong and independent.


I mean, should professional tennis players subsidize professional pickleball players?
 
The WNBA has to build it's own brand...the idea that the men's league will offer their earnings to WNBA players is not the right msg, nor fair pressure to put upon NBA players who have their own people to take care of.....it's not sports welfare in my view. On the other hand tennis is a different story...women's tennis is the same draw ans men's in the majors and they should all be paid equally because they are on a level playing field in the business of sports. The WNBA is simply not a big enough draw to attract big money contracts yet. If they played double headers opening for the men's NBA games and combined the leagues....that would be a game changer because both would play to the same crowd. Having conflicting seasons hurts the WNBA and summer has lots of other sports competition for viewers and ticket buyers. More of an outdoor season than indoor.

No, I don't think they should be subsidized. Unless someone can present an argument as to why. I think if people want womens sports to be paid more they should make change with their wallet and support those sporting events.

I watched the Track and Field championships like 5 or so years ago. My wife and I were just floored at how much more excitement you got from watching the men compete. Their athleticism was downright incredible in comparison. It wasn't anything against the women. It was cool watching them too. But our jaws dropped at the men running.

If it was volleyball or gymnastics or some other sports, women are much more interesting to watch there.

Or, women don't have the same opportunities because of the male dominated system we've had for centuries.

They don't need rescued. But we're all better off if we make incentives for people to do what they love.

If you want to discourage half of the population from making a living on basketball then you are going to have fewer opportunities to take advantage of that talent pool.

Perhaps women can't compete with men physically, but they are very competitive in every other way. Coaching, training, management, ownership, etc. Perhaps if women believe they can actually make a living doing basketball we'll get women who can actually compete with men.

Same with the pay gap. Women tend to miss parts of their professional lives more often than men as caregivers for their children and/or family. That's an incredibly valuable resource, and one that women are paying for via lower wages.

It's not a gift to even up their pay. They've earned it.

Just my opinion.

So, do women have better opportunities in Russia, overall then? That doesn't seem quite right. Because they do get paid more in Russia. No clue how much Russian men get paid, but I'm guessing that WNBA players going over seas and being "American" has a certain je ne sais quoi and the draw of an "American" player inflates their worth significantly.


Also, the WNBA was formed in 1996. The NBA was formed in 1946. They got 50 years on the WNBA. Griners Russian team has been around since 1938.

I don't disagree that men have dominated everything for a long time. It just seems opposite of what they would want to be perceived as where men could be considered saving then.

People could stop virtue signaling and actually start making change by supporting those sports more. But they won't. Because it is just too easy for someone to say they are better than you because they believe this or that.
 
I demand there be a DBA, Dog Basketball Association!

We will also accept the Canine Basketball Association.
