Seems like they think they'll be paid. Unless they are just defecting to Russia...Like Russia is going to be able to pay them

Nor would I. I also wouldn't join a gang or deal drugs...I wouldn't go over there even for a million bucks.
Russia about to get a lot more prisoners. You would think players would see what happened to Griner and stay away from there. Not to mention refrain from playing for Russia to stand with Ukraine. I guess money...or the promise of it talks.
In Russia that won't keep you out of jail...you can go to jail just for running for office in Russia which isn't against the law. You can go to jail for protesting a war which also isn't against the law.Or they could just follow the laws of the country they are going to live and work in.

that was pages ago dude..we were talking about current WNBA players going to Russia to play...not Griner with her hash oil. Fact is you shouldn't trust the "laws" in Russia to protect you or your civil rights period..Or bringing banned drugs into the country, which is what Griner did. You can come up with all the hypotheticals in the world. But she broke their laws and was punished.

The risks people will take to be paid a fair wage...

A wage that wouldn't make them feel compelled to take risks like playing in Russia would be a good start. The average WNBA player makes 102k a season. We are really going to say that's not a 'fair' wage? What would be fair to you?

$120k annually isn't much money for such a short career.
I would say $1 million average salary would be good. With $500k minimum.
That’s amounts to roughly $3,000 per game. Playing overseas with such a short season seems to make a lot of sense. The average WNBA player makes 102k a season. We are really going to say that's not a 'fair' wage? What would be fair to you?
It's not like they don't have the ability to make money doing something else after their basketball days have ended...A wage that wouldn't make them feel compelled to take risks like playing in Russia would be a good start.

I do, as do my kids when they aren't busy with their own sport. Unfortunately there is no team in Oregon. If you want them to make more money, go to games, buy the merch, watch on TV and get friends/family to do so. 120k annually to play a game, plus whatever other endorsements they can make, seems like a pretty nice living to many, even if it's only for a short time coming right out of college when many people are struggling to even make ends meet.
Yeah, it's a great arrangement if everybody wants our great players playing over seas and at risk because they aren't paid well enough here in the US.That’s amounts to roughly $3,000 per game. Playing overseas with such a short season seems to make a lot of sense.
True. They are just women, after all. It's not like they don't have the ability to make money doing something else after their basketball days have ended...

The NBA should be subsidizing a higher salary IMO. They wouldn't even notice it.
Are you in the top 0.1% of your skill in the world?I make just under 100k salary and I do not get to play a sport having fun while doing it. can i get a subsidy as well please?
Are you in the top 0.1% of your skill in the world?
Do literally thousands of people want to watch you do your job?
Do the best at your job compete against other countries of the world every 2 years?
If yes to all of that then I definitely support you making vastly more.
Pro Basketball is in demand. Easily in demand enough that we could pay every professional basketball player in the country $1 million per year without negatively impacting a single person's lifestyle.Me too. Supply and demand. If someone wants to make more, then it needs to be in more demand and the money will come.
Shouldn't salaries and endorsement contracts cover whatever demand there is?Pro Basketball is in demand. Easily in demand enough that we could pay every professional basketball player in the country $1 million per year without negatively impacting a single person's lifestyle.
I'm not sure what you mean by "cover"?Shouldn't salaries and endorsement contracts cover whatever demand there is?
I'm not sure what you mean by "cover"?
Pro basketball in the US is a roughly $10 billion business (not including endorsements) and there are only 600 top level basketball players in the US.
That's enough to pay each player an average salary of $8 million per year while allowing owners half of the profits...
I'm not suggesting every player make that much. Just a minimum salary of $1 million would be great.
Im sorry. I miss read an earlier post. I thought you wanted the public to subsidize. The nba can do whatever they want, but they players have to agree to it. Id say thats a debate between the nba players and owners and the wnba.I'm not sure what you mean by "cover"?

Certainly, it is.Id say thats a debate between the nba players and owners and the wnba.
The NBA lost money for years.Men's Pro Basketball is a $10 billion business.
Women's Pro Basketball loses millions every season and requires subsidies.
You've never heard of the ABA?The NBA lost money for years.
Half of NBA teams regularly lose money before subsidies.
And the NBA has never had a dominant incumbent to compete with.
