Precious few players are worth the max, in my opinion. Chris Paul and Derron Williams are probably the two who's value Roy is most closely connected with. They got maxed out, and look at the state of their teams now... Both franchises are desperate to shed salary. Now, this isn't necessarily the fault of Paul/Williams, but if you don't bet right on maxing players, I do believe you are more likely to end up in salary hell than in the NBA Finals.Hmm, what do you mean "not overpay?" If this were baseball, and contracts could be arbitrarily high, I'd completely agree. But the NBA caps salaries. Are you saying that you don't think Roy is worth the max?
LeBron, Kobe, and Wade, maybe Dwight Howard, are probably the only players in the league currently deserving of max contracts. Everyone else should be pro-rated down based on what percentage of that top level they can produce in terms of stats, selling tickets, moving merchandise, securing TV time, etc. The idea that the cornerstone of every team is a max player is a broken model.
