Take it with a grain of salt, since it's Bill Simmons, but ...

You know who was mentioned in more "Where do you think he's going?" scenarios than anyone besides Amare Stoudemire? Raef LaFrentz's Expiring Contract. That thing got mentioned so many times it could have hired a PR staff and an agent. Here's the kicker: Raef can't play. He's a basketball invalid. He has been injured since something like 1973. Portland's insurance company repays the Blazers his entire season's salary, making him a cap figure and nothing else. In the No Benjamins Association, that makes him a freaking commodity. Teams wanted to dump clearly superior players on Portland at the deadline just to get Raef's insurance money. Phoenix would have traded Shaq for Raef and Channing Frye's expiring contract in a heartbeat. Jersey supposedly offered Vince Carter and two protected No. 1's for Raef's contract, and Milwaukee supposedly would have given up Richard Jefferson and either Joe Alexander or a future No. 1 for it. Incredibly, the Blazers turned everyone down. And this is a team bankrolled by Paul Allen.

Also I had to LOL at this sentence:

Portland seems content to be just a Promising Young Team With a Huge Internet Following for the next 12 years.

Yeah right, I fail to believe Milwaukee didn't offer up Sessions as well in the deal, along with Michael Redd as long as they paid 99 percent of his salary just for RLEC.

It shows how highly RLEC was valued by the team.

Yeah, I'd take what a (rather poor) humourist like Bill Simmons says with a grain of salt.

it the RJ deal is true... pritchard should be fired.

Simmons forgot to add that Milwaukie also insisted on Rudy with RLEC and that was why we kept saying NO.

Yeah, I'd take what a (rather poor) humourist like Bill Simmons says with a grain of salt.

It jibes with what I heard close to the trade deadline, although I had heard about RJ + the 1st and not RJ + Joe Alexander. As for the VC deal, I also heard whispers of something like it. I'm no insider, I'm just saying that Simmons may not be wrong on this count.

We get one big move to acquire an expensive contract. That better be the right move because it locks us up for years. KP says that big move wasn't good enough at the trade deadline. He has one more shot next year, but it will be more difficult to execute. If the big move for the "right" expensive star does not become available, then we will have to continue to grow our own through the draft and through opportunistic trades.

A star level wing improves us incrementally. A star level point improves us multiplicatively. Like others, I personally believe that KP is hoping for a good to great point or perhaps a young and great wing player.

If these reports are true, it appears that perhaps saving money was more important to PA than we previously thought.

It's funny because it's true.

The Carter + picks was reported by some other reporter the day after the deadline. That report clashed with previous reports that Thorn was reluctant to include even one pick with Carter. I don't think Simmons is a second source, I think he's just repeating that claim and adding one of his own.

He could be right, I just don't think it's very likely. I don't consider Simmons a good source for real information.

I heard about both before the trade deadline. And like I said, I'm no insider. We'll agree to disagree on the veracity of the information.

I really don't care about Joe Alexander being thrown in, I am not a fan of his. The main piece would have been RJ anyhow.

Do we really have a Huge Internet Following? I always assumed that we were fewer in number than teams in larger cities.

If you read any article on ESPN.com that has a Blazer-related snippet, take a look at the comments. They are usually 60% Blazer fans.

Compared to size of market we are, our online presence is massive if you look at the various blog and forum activity.

Huge? Man, I'm trying to shed a few pounds. No need for the name calling. ;)

Nope, it's all part of Pritchard's even bigger plan. Look for the Blazers to make the surprise free agent signing of the summer - they will re-sign Raef to a 1-year max. contract. Why not? They hold his Bird rights. Then in Febrary 2010, they have an even bigger expiring contract to offer at the trade deadline.

And, we all know, summer 2010 is THE summer of big name free agents. By this time next year, some teams (NOH, MEM, etc.) will be even more starpped for cash and willing to give up talent in exchange for a max. expiring contract. Other teams will be looking to shed salary to partake in the summer 2010 free agent seepstakes. Teams that know they dont' stand a chance of re-signing their own big name free agents will be looking to move them rather than loose them for nothing.

The stakes will be much higher next February at the deadline than they were this year. More big names will be available and more teams will be desparate to make deals. The offers will be much more plentiful and much better than anything Pritchard was offered this February. Pritchard was smart to pass on everyone's flotsam and jetsom, over-the-hill, overpaid cast-offs this time around and hold out for a real prize next February. The guy's a genius.

If it is true - that the Blazers could re-sign Raef and wind up with an even larger expiring for 2010 - then bring on LeBron! Bring on Paul!

Very interesting. Nice post!

I like that a lot. It would be huge if it happened (resigning raef) because it would be a very clear signal that Paul was planning to spend as much as it takes to win a title. At this point, though, we don't really have any definite indication of which direction he's going. He might cut costs just as hard as any of the other owners.

Why not? Keith Van Horn was re-signed just to make the salaries match in a trade long after he'd stopped playing. I think he was even traded a second time afterwards. It's not like the Blazers have requested a medical retirement for Raef. They hold his Bird Rights. So, when his current contract expires, they can offer him a max. deal for 1 year.
