The Nets are 0-12. A bad start, to be sure. But not the worst start in NBA history. That distinction goes to the Heat's inaugural season in 1988-89, when they started out 0-17. The Clippers tied that mark a decade later.

So will the Nets eclipse the woeful record? If they don't beat the Knicks on Saturday, it's looking more and more likely.

As ESPN's John Hollinger notes, after the Knicks game, the Nets are heading out West for games against Portland, Denver, Sacramento and the Lakers. Besides the Kings, those are likely all losses. If the Knicks game plus this four-game trip all end up being losses, that puts them at a tie for the record. Their next game is on Dec. 2 at home against Dallas, another likely loss, and perhaps the night they break the record and drop to 0-18.

The Kings' game looks like the only decent possibility... although Portland's history of losing games they should win is pretty remarkable. The only sure losses are the Nuggets and the Lakers. Denver is a tough place to win when the Nuggets are bad, it's nearly impossible when they're good. And of course, the Lakers, even if just the reserves show up, they've got enough firepower to beat New Jersey.

Dallas also has a history of losing games they have no business losing, so I think NJ will be OK to not BREAK the record, though they may match it. However, I think even if NJ doesn't win against Sacramento, they'll pull an upset against someone. Bottom line, I highly doubt they'll match/break the record.
