As discussed here last week, it's quite possible that the Cavs will elect to hang onto Wally Szczerbiak's $13.8 million expiring salary instead of dealing Szczerbiak -- as many teams expected coming into the season -- before the Feb. 19 trading deadline.

The thinking: Cleveland is rolling too smoothly, with Mo Williams clicking immediately and Szczerbiak and Ben Wallace looking far more settled than they did when they arrived in February, to change too much midstream.

The exception? If they can turn Szczerbiak's contract into something big and bold.

"Like a trade for Vince Carter," said one rival executive. "That's a name on their list."

The Cavs certainly have room for at least one more front-line contributor in the frontcourt as well as the backcourt, but saving the Szczerbiak chip for an All-Star caliber name such as Carter or Antawn Jamison feeds into the team's primary objective. Which, of course, is sparing no expense to make the roster as enticing as possible to discourage LeBron James from looking anywhere else in the summer of 2010.

At worst it's Cleveland's 1A mission, right up there with its dreams of dethroning Boston as early as this spring.

Wake up, Cavs GM, Thorn only robs people, not gets robbed by people. He is not even a GM of Grizzlies.

You want Carter? Throw in LeBron, or no way.

Would Nets fans be willing to gift wrap a ring to LeBron by doing this move? It's not like the Cavs have a whole bunch of draft picks and young players to give in exchange like in the Kidd deal.

Chances are LeBron would be so happy in Cleveland he might even stay there in 2010.

this is true....I mean of course they're trying to clear up room for Bron, but Vince (although he's soft) would automatically make the Cavs the favorites to go all the way................not to mention he and Bron would be a damn highlight film every night.

Wally for Carter's toenails, maybe. For all you dyslexic Cavs GMs out there, his name is "Rob" Thorn, not "Rod".

They really have nothing that could interest the Nets besides LeBron...

What could they offer for VC?
Sczerbiak and 20 first round picks in the next 40 seasons?
That's still not enough imo....

I do not want to see VC go. He's my favorite player, and I've been following his career since UNC. When he got drafted, I stopped watching NCAA (minus March Madness). If I owned the Nets, I'd gladly extend VC's contract another ten years. If he were to be traded to the Cavs, I'd be devastated. But I would immediately buy league pass to see LBJ and VC tear up the league. That'd be entertaining. If VC had to be traded, I'd probably want him in New Orleans though. I feel like VC can help them out a lot.

If you've watched Vince with the nets and review the top free throw getters in the league as well as top crunchtime scorers for the last 6 years you'll see that vince is always near the top or in the top 10. That's hardly soft in my opinion but you know what keep listening to the national media.

Cleveland is crazy if they think VC is just worth cap relief and one of their shitty prospects. They don't have a single young player besides Lebron that has the potential to be a starter. If the bobcats could get Diaw and Bell for Jason Richardson, then I think we can get a better deal than cap space wally plus garbage for Vince.

New Orleans is stupid they had JR Smith. They ruined a good thing. The could;ve developed JR into what Peja Stojakovic is today and then some, would've saved a lot of money. Just another example of Byron being too arrogant and disagreeable.

there is no way carter is getting traded this year nd maybe not even next...u see wat he is doin with HARRIS..

6 words...:drumroll:

BEST BACK COURT IN THE NBA...

Ron (rob) thorn will b an idiot if he breaks up that back court :

Yeah.......he's still soft, lol. I've heard those arguments from Vince fans before, but the fact remains that at times he can fall in love with the jumper, has admitted to quitting, has been called soft by teammates (most notably Jason Kidd), and isn't someone who I'd trust leading the way in the post season.........

damn...........are you for real???? lol

Yeah lol. Well think about it -- who was mildly entertaining in 2000-2002? I think the next time I watched some NCAA was to check out Wade and Melo.

If you were not a Nets fan, just be quiet, Kidd never said that, and Vince always plays as tough as he can in the Nets era.

Only missed few games less than 5 or so.

Don't try to troll here, keep dreaming, good boy.

For those guys who think Carter was quitting, must read this.

"I was fortunate to have the talent...you get spoiled when you're able to do
a lot of things. You see that you don't have to work at it. Now, with the all
the injuries, I have to work harder; I'm a little hungrier. Getting a fresh
start has made me want to attack the basket."

John Thompson asked:"did not push yourself as hard as you should have in
Toronto." , "In years past, no,"Carter said.

You know, Vince wasn't meaning he quited for Toronto,
he just told the truth that he had really good talents, and those spoiled him,
right now he is not younger anymore, he has to work out harder,

Don't be fooled by the reporter, think twice about the truth, if you were an intelligent human.

VC is a classy guy. Glad to have him on my favorite team ;)

he is just too innocent, if he had been smart enough, he should have said

"yes, I played very hard for Toronto, and I love that city, but right now it's time to move on"

but he is just too damn honest, that's why he gets hated in Toronto, he is just a good person.

The fifth clutch player currently in the league, and the fifteenth player in PER.

Yes, he is just so soft, and as soft as Olajuwan in his late career.

I see Marc Stein is still trying to sell his "trade Carter" theory. What's with that guy, he's been on this ever since the draft. Carter is playing like an All-Star this season. Who in their right mind would trade him for Wally Z?

Stein is on crack, most people and writers would agree to stick with what's working. The team is out performing expectations.

he might be a big Cavs fan.

Kidd was calling Vince soft around the locker room and he didn't care for him all that much, lol. You don't have to be a "nets fan" to see some of these things. I'm not trolling, I've called Vince (and his soft cousin) "soft" for some time now.

don't get caught up "clutch" stats, because numbers in the final minutes come under different circumstances I can think of
an entire list of players that I'd rather have down the stretch in a big close ball game.....Bron, Wade, Kobe, Pierce, Paul, Duncan, Nash, Billups, etc.....and lol @ dissing an over the hill Olajuwon....I'm not sure what the point of that was supposed to be..........

an intelligent human would also remember how he admitted to quiting on his team in toronto, lol....I don't care how bad the people around you are, that's no excuse to open a can of quit.

The Cavs right now have three players under contract for 2010-11: James, Gibson and Hickson. Add Carter to that mix and it does limit their ability to fill out the roster...and you have to assume Carter will be worth $17 million that year. I believe he will, but it's a risk. That's a lot of money (and with the economy the way it is, the salary cap, luxury tax threshold and all the MLE and LLE numbers will be driven down).

I also note that the sourcing for Stein's report that the Cavs are still interested in Carter is "a rival executive" who says he's still on their list. That's hardly definitive.

VC never "admitted" to quitting. This has been one of the biggest misconceptions in recent NBA history.

"soft" gets thrown around too commonly. Kidd calling VC soft for quitting on a team? That's a WTF moment.

I never heard of Kidd calling VC soft. There were rumours, but with VC, there will always be rumours. I do remember Kidd calling out the team for mentally letting go of the rope, and if I remember correctly, VC didn't play in that game.

VC never "admitted" to quitting. This has been one of the biggest misconceptions in recent NBA history.

John Thompson, the current TNT analyst and the former Georgetown basketball coach who conducted the interview, said he felt people misinterpreted Carter's words. ''That boy never said to me, 'Coach, I just laid down and quit,' '' Thompson said in a telephone interview last week. ''I was embarrassed and felt awful about it for his sake, because I knew what he was communicating to me. I think he was more expressing a desire of wanting to do better, as we all do.''

the interview was edited and its pretty obvious when you watch it. but vc haters hold onto it like the holy grail of why he sucks.

i think it would be better for both parties if vince went to cavs. cavs get better, nets get his huge contract off their hands and they have flexibility in the future.

Oh? So you decide to ignore the truth while Vince is listed on the top of the league?

Try to study hard, good boy. You are ignorant.

So , did you read my quote?

How does giving away your best player for future cap while this team has chance for playoffs make the Nets better? We already have cap for 2010, we need talent for talent.

I admit, it's much better for drama and talking smack, but really... bottom feeder cap teams rarely improve.

they were even talking about it last night on ESPN, lol...

I'm not ignoring anything and I'm sure I've been watching basketball a lot longer than you, and realize what "clutch" really is. "End of the game" stats are not a good indication of who is and isn't clutch. For example...Kobe has been in a lot of blowouts this year, so naturally his "end of the game" stats aren't going to be through the roof. There are also a lot of games which "pressure" is not a factor in the last few minutes for either the team that's winning or losing. A good indicator of seeing who is or isn't clutch is by taking a good sample of "real" clutch situations (like tough playoff games...you know when it counts) and looking at how that individual performed....you're insane if you'd take Vince to win a game for you in a fourth quarter over the guys I listed......Bron, Kobe, Wade, Manu, etc. have the track records, wins, and rings to prove it..............

So , did you read my quote?

yes and he's still saying that "he doesn't play hard," because of his talent.....that's pathetic......
