Cavs Still interested in Carter?

As discussed here last week, it's quite possible that the Cavs will elect to hang onto Wally Szczerbiak's $13.8 million expiring salary instead of dealing Szczerbiak -- as many teams expected coming into the season -- before the Feb. 19 trading deadline.

The thinking: Cleveland is rolling too smoothly, with Mo Williams clicking immediately and Szczerbiak and Ben Wallace looking far more settled than they did when they arrived in February, to change too much midstream.

The exception? If they can turn Szczerbiak's contract into something big and bold.

"Like a trade for Vince Carter," said one rival executive. "That's a name on their list."

The Cavs certainly have room for at least one more front-line contributor in the frontcourt as well as the backcourt, but saving the Szczerbiak chip for an All-Star caliber name such as Carter or Antawn Jamison feeds into the team's primary objective. Which, of course, is sparing no expense to make the roster as enticing as possible to discourage LeBron James from looking anywhere else in the summer of 2010.

At worst it's Cleveland's 1A mission, right up there with its dreams of dethroning Boston as early as this spring.

I do not want to see VC go. He's my favorite player, and I've been following his career since UNC. When he got drafted, I stopped watching NCAA (minus March Madness). If I owned the Nets, I'd gladly extend VC's contract another ten years. If he were to be traded to the Cavs, I'd be devastated. But I would immediately buy league pass to see LBJ and VC tear up the league. That'd be entertaining. If VC had to be traded, I'd probably want him in New Orleans though. I feel like VC can help them out a lot.

If you've watched Vince with the nets and review the top free throw getters in the league as well as top crunchtime scorers for the last 6 years you'll see that vince is always near the top or in the top 10. That's hardly soft in my opinion but you know what keep listening to the national media.

Cleveland is crazy if they think VC is just worth cap relief and one of their shitty prospects. They don't have a single young player besides Lebron that has the potential to be a starter. If the bobcats could get Diaw and Bell for Jason Richardson, then I think we can get a better deal than cap space wally plus garbage for Vince.

New Orleans is stupid they had JR Smith. They ruined a good thing. The could;ve developed JR into what Peja Stojakovic is today and then some, would've saved a lot of money. Just another example of Byron being too arrogant and disagreeable.

The Cavs right now have three players under contract for 2010-11: James, Gibson and Hickson. Add Carter to that mix and it does limit their ability to fill out the roster...and you have to assume Carter will be worth $17 million that year. I believe he will, but it's a risk. That's a lot of money (and with the economy the way it is, the salary cap, luxury tax threshold and all the MLE and LLE numbers will be driven down).

I also note that the sourcing for Stein's report that the Cavs are still interested in Carter is "a rival executive" who says he's still on their list. That's hardly definitive.

How does giving away your best player for future cap while this team has chance for playoffs make the Nets better? We already have cap for 2010, we need talent for talent.

I'm not ignoring anything and I'm sure I've been watching basketball a lot longer than you, and realize what "clutch" really is. "End of the game" stats are not a good indication of who is and isn't clutch. For example...Kobe has been in a lot of blowouts this year, so naturally his "end of the game" stats aren't going to be through the roof. There are also a lot of games which "pressure" is not a factor in the last few minutes for either the team that's winning or losing. A good indicator of seeing who is or isn't clutch is by taking a good sample of "real" clutch situations (like tough playoff games...you know when it counts) and looking at how that individual performed....you're insane if you'd take Vince to win a game for you in a fourth quarter over the guys I listed......Bron, Kobe, Wade, Manu, etc. have the track records, wins, and rings to prove it..............
