Protecting the owners from themselves/each other. That pretty well sums it up!

The involvement of Dolan, Shinn, Sarver, and Bennett in the process is disheartening. Dolan and Shinn are 2 of the worst 5 owners in the league. Sarver is the poster boy for "pennies wise/pounds foolish. Bennett is a sleazy sociopath. At least the Blazers and Lakers are represented, so the teams that care about winning will have *some* voice.

Pulled from that article.

Rubio is said to have turned down Olympiakos' lucrative offer, said to be the best financial offer he's received. DKV Joventut president Jordi Villacampa told Spanish media this weekend that Rubio could not return to his team next season, opening the door for Rubio's contract to be sold outright to Real Madrid. It is believed that Real Madrid would offer to re-work Rubio's contract giving him a nice two-year deal with a more NBA-friendly buyout after two years. Rubio is said to be open to the idea.

At least two more years until Rubio hits the NBA, and then it will be after a new CBA is negotiated. Would his contract be retroactive to the current CBA, or would he be paid at whatever rate the #5 pick gets in the 2010-11 draft? I can't imagine the league will give up salary control on draft picks, and if anything, the current NBAPA membership may possibly yield some ground on rookie contracts.
