n a segment on TNT's Inside the NBA last night,Charles Barkley told a story about trying to convince the Portland Trail Blazers to trade for him.

Barkley claims he flew to Portland on his own dime during his playing days to meet with the Blazers - though he declined to name the GM who he spoke with - to discuss joining the franchise.

"One summer I flew to Portland on my own dime - The Portland Trail Blazers owe me $1,197," Barkley joked before continuing his story. "I said, 'y'all got a good team, but y'all can't play in the half court. You're not gonna win a championship without me.'"

The pair met for over three hours talking about a trade, Barkley claims. They discussed how they could build a team around Barkley before he left the Rose City, including which players he needed to keep on the roster and which players the Blazers could do without. The Blazers seemed receptive and Barkley was told by the Blazers brass they would be getting back to him. The next day, Barkley got a phone call from the Blazers in which they told him they would not be trading for him.

"I was pissed," said Barkley.

Here's a look at Barkley's full comments:

He still says we owe him money for his ticket.

He was begging to come here

I actually loved Barkley and really wanted him on the Blazers. However, for what we likely would have had to give up, there is nothing saying that trading for for him would have resulted in a championship. Especially if our team leader wasn't excited about sharing the court with him.

Psst... Barkley would have become our team leader.

And I think I remember when Barkley was rumored to come to Portland. Who would it have cost us? Probably someone like Kersey + some youth to get it done? Kersey and Porter even maybe? who knows.

I actually despise Durant. What a bitch that guy is. Don't want him on my team. Yes, I like my team to win. But I also like rooting for my team. I'd have a hard time rooting for that douche.

I like you. (Raises thumb)

Hindsight is 20/20. If he were drafted here you probably would have loved him until he pulled on us what he did to OKC.

Phoenix traded an all star and two other starters--all 28 or under--from a 53-win team for Barkley. Why do we think Philly would have taken a significantly lesser package from us?
