Good for Olshey. Stand up for what you believe in and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. He obviously thinks very highly of Billups. Let’s hope he’s as good as Neil thinks he is.

I’ll be the first person to drop Neil off at the airport when he gets fired someday, but sometimes I admire the balls on this guy. He has so much conviction in every one of his decisions he will never think he’s wrong. The “Neil always gets his guy” schtick is funny because it’s true. Aminu, Kanter, Melo, I’m sure there’s more players that he just never gave up on even though it was clear they were not as good as he thought. I bet he thinks Roy Hibbert could still be playing in this league if we signed him that one off-season.

But yeah, fuck Neil even if I’m on his side on this decision.

OK, serious question. Living out of area makes it hard for me to judge. Is the Billups controversy a tempest in a Twitter pot or are there serious misgivings among fans and community at large?

The funny thing now is that I see a lot of Tweeters saying Billups' 5-year deal is the final straw in Dame forcing a trade.

I don’t think he will. He isn’t stupid, no reason to provoke it further. Make the statement, be clear they found nothing in their investigations, answer the dumb questions if they come, and move on.

Not stupid. But also very prideful.

You, my friend, have a lot more faith in our GMs ability to “not be himself” than I do.

That’s the logical thing to do.

And I have no faith that the Portland media is not going to press the issue.

I hope you’re right though.

It’s too hard to tell. Honestly I think most fans probably have no idea about his past. Most casuals really don’t follow the nba that closely. His past will slowly spread.

Much of Canzano's article implies that he is without a doubt a rapist, and he quotes her as saying the same.

Said Tracy: “Guess I won’t be going to any Blazer games. I’m glad the men who raped me didn’t amount to much because I can’t imagine how hard it is to watch your rapist succeed in life when you’re trying to deal with the fallout.”

Maybe he took her comment and twisted it for his own agenda, or maybe they know something I don't, but it disgusts me when people act as judge and jury in the media.
Fuck, man. Show some compassion. This Billups thing has brought out the worst in a lot of y'all.

TRAIL BLAZERS NAME CHAUNCEY BILLUPS HEAD COACH

FORMER NBA CHAMPION AND FIVE-TIME ALL-STAR BECOMES 15TH HEAD COACH IN FRANCHISE HISTORY

PORTLAND, Ore. (June 27, 2021) – The Portland Trail Blazers have named Chauncey Billups as the team’s head coach, it was announced today by president of basketball operations Neil Olshey. Billups becomes the 15th head coach to lead the Trail Blazers.

“Chauncey is a proven leader with an elite basketball IQ that has won everywhere he has been,” said Olshey. “He is prepared for the challenge of developing the Championship habits and strategic approach we need to achieve the expectations and goals for our franchise.”

The Trail Blazers conducted a thorough and equitable search and Billups is the right choice to lead the organization to the playoffs and beyond.

Billups joins the Trail Blazers after spending the 2020-21 season as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers. As a part of head coach Tyronn Lue’s staff, Billups helped coach the Clippers to a regular season record of 47-25 (.653) and a playoff run that currently has the Clippers in the Western Conference Finals. Billups is a proven leader, a mentor with the ability to grow and develop players and has a knowledge of the game that is unparalleled.

"I'm very excited and humbled to be the next coach of the Trail Blazers," said Billups. "Portland is a special place and a unique franchise. As a player I always loved playing here because the passion and knowledge of the fans brought out the very best in me as a competitor. Now I'm looking forward to being on the other side of that energy and engaging with the Portland community on a whole other level.”

"I want to thank Jody Allen, Bert Kolde and Neil Olshey for their trust and for giving me this incredible opportunity,” continued Billups. “And, most importantly, I want to say to the fans that I know what this team means to you, and I promise to pour every ounce into continuing to make you proud of what the Trail Blazers stand for."

Billups, 44, played 17 seasons in the NBA for Boston, Toronto, Denver, Minnesota, Detroit, New York and the Clippers. In 2004 he was named the NBA Finals MVP after leading Detroit to an NBA Championship. A five-time All-Star, Billups was named All-NBA Second Team in 2006 and All-NBA Third Team in 2007 and 2009. He also received NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors in 2005 and 2006. In addition to his playing accolades, Billups was awarded the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2008, the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2009, and the inaugural Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award in 2013. Billups’ No. 1 jersey was retired by the Pistons in 2016. For his career, Billups averaged 15.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 1,043 games.

“Chauncey is a proven and consistent winner with NBA championship experience as an All-NBA player,” said Jody Allen, Portland Trail Blazers Chair. “He has demonstrated throughout his career, first as a player, and currently as an Assistant Coach a unique ability to lead. We are very happy to welcome him to Portland."

Billups has demonstrated both his commitment to mentorship on and off the court though his work with at-risk youth and his dedication to helping prevent homelessness.

After retiring as a player following the 2013-14 season, Billups worked as a studio analyst and game analyst for ESPN. During the 2019-20 season, Billups served as the game analyst for Los Angeles Clippers broadcasts on FOX Sports Prime Ticket.

A Denver native, Billups attended the University of Colorado (1995-97) where he was a consensus second-team All-American in his second season. He and his wife Piper have three daughters.

Every single Blazer fan I've spoken with outside the forum has said what the fuck. I'll quote one text which summarizes the tenor: "Why couldn’t they just hire one of the numerous qualified candidates that had never been under investigation for rape or domestic abuse? Doesn’t seem like it would be hard to do." In here, clearly, it's a different story. I'm also not from the suburbs.

Maybe in their eyes, Chauncey was the most qualified coach for the current roster.

But the hippie at the coffee shop probably knows better.

good point. I have to think ownership has brought in some sort of advisor/PR person to come up with a strategy for mr. manhattan.

How about some compassion to Chauncey's 3 daughters whose dad has been called a rapist by the Portland media.
Okay, fine, you win. Mock rape victims. Have fun.

And read the fucking details. There is no way in hell you can say he did not do it. That doesn't mean he did, but he was sued by the alleged victim's ex(?)girlfriend, one Antoine Walker (makes the money seeking liar claim seem a lot less credible but whatever), and his timeline and narrative don't align, and he paid her money. But innocent until proven guilty, I know, I know, because there hasn't been a long history of not believing women.

That was a quote from an electrical engineer. But he did used to have long hair and play in bands and we did used to drink coffee together a fair amount...

Here's the deal, if the team investigated the situation from 1997 and came to the conclusion that Chauncey was innocent and the team also thought that Chauncey was the best candidate, then the move that takes character and ethics is to hire Chauncey and deal with the aftermath. The easy and unethical thing to do is go with a different coach, that you don't believe is as good, so you can avoid doing some PR work.

Welcome to Portland Chauncey, your wife and all 3 daughters as well as your extended family! I have no doubt you will become a valuable member of ripcity and the Portland area quickly. We have a great culture here and hopefully you can make our guys two way players!

Can someone explain why so many people think hiring Billups means Dame will leave? He was one of his two names he liked. I don’t get it.

It was the Billups bashing. Calling everyone who was cool with it a rape apologist. It already eliminated Kidd from consideration
