CHris Haynes: Buchanan and Canales "frontrunners" to get interim tag removed

Seriously, how fucking hard is to to pick a fucking GM?

I wonder if they realize the lack of a GM and their idiotic "GM search" is actually more detrimental than what Cho did to get canned.

I just don't get it.

I've come to the unavoidable conclusion that Paul Allen is bat shit crazy.

I'm pretty sure the rest of the league has figured it out too.

Welcome to the club. I've been posting this for years now.

I honestly think that the Blazers (Paul and Bert) are doing this to fuck with S2.

Using the picks is not the best route to take. Look at the history

The 4th and 7th picks in 2006 yielded LMA and Brandon Roy after some trades. Has another team had a better lottery draft since the lottery was created?

Same year? NO!

This must be some last-chance effort for PA to get somebody to buy the team in the next week or so.

No coach, no GM, very few long-term contracts, rabid fanbase, two lottery picks...

Hmm

6 years later and the team still hasn't gotten out of the first round and has lottery picks again. I guess we can play bizarro NBA history and pretend it actually worked out.

And Aldridge was the #2 pick in the draft. Like I said, we need to move up....keeping the picks has a low probabilty of success. I'm interested in winning, not having young youthful potential. I've said it several times, only way to be a contender is to build through high (top 3 lotto picks) or make blockbuster trades. I stand by that.

Now you're thinking.

Indeed we do.

i admit to being biased on Kaleb so I won't comment on that situation but to make Chad the GM now would seem to be a very weak move. This could have been done months ago, but after looking at all the qualified candidates they are going to decide he is the best for the job? chalk this up in the less than impressed category for me.

so you don't account for freak injuries? i stand by the statement that there are many ways to build a winner in the NBA, not just through top three draft picks. is it the best way? maybe for the blazers but what is the difference between #2 and #6 this season?

WTF- Paul could hire a PE teacher from any of the Oregon's finest public schools for cheap right now. His team is a fucking joke. After this hire PM me I sell you all my season tickets half priceto the first rsvp.

Yeah, why don't we....

OKC has done pretty well bulding through the draft, as has SA, and the Lakers (Kobe\Bynum), Utah, Philly & Indiana are other teams stacked with young talent they acquired primarily thru the draft.

The path POR took (the draft) would have worked if Roy & Oden had stayed healthy....So it wasn't a flaw in the plan but either the failure to take injury history\concerns more seriously or just plain bad luck....there isn't one team in the NBA who could lose thier 1st and 3rd best players and be competing for an NBA title...

the plan worked and will work again if POR elects to go tat route again and does thier homework on players...

Is Buchanan capable of dong that? I don't know, but his track record isn't good...

Can we please get another pro team? Im tired of this joke of a franchise being the only game in town. Baseball, football, hockey.... I don't care which.

Mediocre Man..... this isn't the thread you are looking for.......

This tells me that Portland is going the route of a full long term rebuild. Paul Allen must be thinking why spend the cash on a high-priced GM and Coach when these current coaches and GM's can be let go of at anytime for a much cheaper buyout or payment of the remainder of their contracts than what bringing in a competent GM/Coach would cost. I see this as buying additional time, to appease the season ticket holders that this team has a direction. I'll be curious to see, but I predict that both salaries will be at the very lower end of the average pay scale for these positions. It'll make it cheaper in the long run to dump them once the team appears to be on the rise again, or perhaps maybe (forgive me here) Canzano is right, PA wants to sell the team. I still call bull shit on Canzano's theory at this time though.

6 years ago, with Zach Randolph as the franchise player, the team was getting over bankruptcy, tickets were literally being given away for free, and nobody cared other that some of us kooky diehards on other boards.

Building through draft generally only works with top 3 picks I said. Sometimes you can say top 5 pick but that's even a stretch at times.

OKC:
Durant #2
Westbrook #4
Harden #3

SAS:
Duncan #1, greatest PF of all time.

LAL:
History of Blockbuster trades or FA acquisitions.
Shaq, Gasol, etc.

Utah, Philly, Indiana...aren't going to win any rings unless they get a star through the usual channels (top 3 draft pick OR trading for superstars).

Contenders are generally built really fast and with big gambles. Roster clearing trades, free agent acquisitions. The development of a top 3 pick in the draft who becomes a league superstar in a few seasons or through trades getting top players in the draft to surround other players. Its RARELY built on low lottery picks outside the top 3.

and last season, in many people's eyes was worse than that.

And to get out of that era, Portland got two top 3 picks in the NBA draft and people were excited again. Draft picks aren't bad...but its generally only the top 3 picks that change franchises into contenders.

I'm just worried that they're keeping Chad in place because they know he won't make waves. The day that Paul Allen fires Larry Miller and stops listening to Bert Kolde will be a truly wondrous day indeed.

The obvious flaw with this theory is that Paul Allen has a long-term pattern of stepping on his own dick when things start to go too well for his team. Paying some inexperienced rubes next to nothing, and hoping it pays off, seems like winging it to me.

That's the problem with long-term thinking in building a contender. you can't do it otherwise you start second guessing yourself and fuck yourself over in the process. you overvalue guys like Nic Batum as part of the "plan" and make him untouchable when he's essentially a role player.

gotta go big or go home. and do it quickly.

If we're able to build a win-now type team, then no...canales isn't the answer. however it seems that there isn't really a vision and people seem to want a young team that will take 3-5 years to "click" and become a playoff team that has a shot of getting out of the first round.

for that, canales is fine. Me, I want the blazers to gamble and move up in the draft then try to get stars in free agency. if we're talking guys like Dragic, then we're going to be mediocre for the next decade until there is a change in the philosophy of building the team.

we need trader bob.

This doesn't sound like Paul Allen's plan to me... this sounds like ol' Larry and Bert not wanting another voice in Paul's ear. They've gotten Nate out of the picture and now if they can get the interim label removed from Chad and Kaleb, they're good to go. Who is going to make waves? Kaleb? Yeah right. That guy just wants to prove that he belongs. The last thing he wants to do is piss off Larry Miller or Bert Kolde. Chad has already shown he's either an idiot or a yes man, so he's a perfect candidate for this circus. I can't wait until we get new ownership.

They could make it all better if we can land MKG or Beal in this draft.

Trade up, trade up, trade up!

Does it really matter? Any GM is just the 3rd or 4th cog in the gears that turns this organization. How loud a voice is any other that have been rumored to fill the GM spot? Not saying it's right or for the best....Buchanan as GM probably wields the same effect as any other potential other.

As for Canales, we're in full rebuild mold. The players play hard for him....that's better than the opposite and a start I guess.

I'd agree with the trade up if the there was a stark difference between 2 from 6.....but is there?
