So I was randomly looking at previous recruiting classes, and I came across Hamani Stevens, Center for the Ducks. He was favorited to win the Center position this year, but chose to go on a 2 year Church Mission. He said he intends to return in 2011.. would he still be a Redshirt Freshman when he comes back at that time? I'm not entirely sure how that works. Anyone know?

If he has yet to play at all, he will have 4 years left.

wow that would be one mature freshan.. he would be like 21! He redshirted last year behind Unger so he hasnt played a snap. Thanks for the info!

BYU has benefitted from this rule for decades. Lot of 24 or 25 year-old men on their teams as opposed to 19 year-old kids.

I heard Randy Couture went to college and wrestled when he was like 28 or something, after he was done with the military.

He was wrestling against 19 year old kids when he was a grown man!

How does a 19 year old go on a 2 year mission and come back 24-25 years old???

I'd be a rich ass mo-fo if I made $125,000 a year :)

They have 24-25 year-old seniors who typically take their mission at ages 18-19. Hence, they come back as 20 year-old freshmen and can still redshirt. Most are not there as 19 year-olds. Look at a BYU roster sometime.

Hell, Max Hall, their QB, is 24 years-old because of his mission. :dunno:

It's not fuzzy math, it's a fact.

A player often redshirts his first year back from his mission.

Because of the long-standing ties of the LDS Church in Polynesia, many football players are also Polynesian. Bryce Mahuika, for example, is Māori, and he introduced the tradition of the team performing the Haka in 2005.

Of the players participating in 2008 fall Camp, 60 served a two-year mission

With kids, car payments, mortgage?

That's not "rich".

no kids, no mortgage, and a $200 car payment... I would be rich!
