My wife and I just moved out of a highrise in downtown San Diego. It was brand new when we moved in last year, but it just wasn't a great fit for us. Too blah. White walls, white carpet. Basically no character. We are still downtown, but in a loft/studio and it is a much better fit. So, while a nice, new condo might not be our style, I don't think we'll ever move out of the city. Down here, we'll stay downtown, but if we moved back to Seattle or Portland, we'd probably end up outside of downtown, but in a neighborhood within the city, like Mississippi/Irvington/Alberta in Portland or Capitol Hill/Fremont in Seattle. We try and drive as little as possible so neighborhoods that are walkable are perfect for us. We bought a car last August and have only put 3,000 miles on it. This is living in Southern California and including 3 or 4 trips up to LA.
The burbs, regardless if they are affluent or not, just give off a different vibe. It's a good fit for some people, but not others.
