I've had a sore throat for the past week. I always wear a mask, I stay home as much as possible, but I feel like I should go get tested. I also feel a bit like a hypochondriac. Anyone else feel this way?
get tested. Speaking from personal experience, the relief you feel after a negative test is unmatched.

A lot of pharmacies are offering free tests, like Rite Aid https://www.riteaid.com/pharmacy/services/covid-19-testing

The decreasing death rate is a reflection of the amazing and difficult work by our medical and scientific professionals. For some to site these statistics and then ignore or dismiss other advice and information by these seem professionals is infuriating.

Not quite following your comment. Are you saying that there’s something incorrect in the Times’ quote that I posted or was this just a general comment about dipsticks who ignore facts(dipstick-in-chief included)?

Nothing wrong with your post or the Times. I've just seen multiple comments by people (not in this forum) showing that the decrease in death rate means we don't need to listen to experts about wearing masks and social distancing.

I don't get that argument at all.

I personally am listening to the people who have worked so hard to decrease the death rate and they're saying, WEAR FUCKING MASKS!

Total agreement on that point. The people who see this as some sort of assault on their individual rights are nuts. That should be patently obvious, but I've long ago given up on obvious things being seen as reasonable by everyone. Bottom line, wear masks or pay big-assed fines.

And one last point: Just exactly when did the Republican Party become the party of stupid? I was Republican all my life, primarily based on the notion that governments generally should do less and should pay for what they do. That concept was increasingly ignored by the Republicans. Trump's ascension left no principled way I could be associated with these yahoos. Now, the blatant disregard for all science is just freaking nuts.

I know I gripe about this too much, but this continual disdain for experts and science is KILLING ME! It seems like the most boring satire of all time. Everyone watching is like "Okay, I got it already. People are idiots." But it's our new reality! They really are idiots!

And isn't it just the equivalent of killing the messenger half the time?!?

Never used the word wackadoodle before but these folks are wackadoodles! (Is it a noun (folk are wackadoodles) or an adjective (those some wackadoodle folks)? I think it's both.)

And it permeates. Don't believe in wearing masks? Then you probably believe in QAnon and hate you some BLM and so forth.

Man oh man, I need a break from this...

I believe it was during the 1980s when the republican party moved from being the party of Science and Industry to the party of Industry and Religion. Taking the religious base from the dems was a good move for them for decades but now they've lost all focus and direction.

Remember, the EPA and protecting our environment were republican ideas.

I was a bit young for politics in the 80s, but the notion of Republicans protecting the environment for anything other than the utter depletion of its resources seems preposterous. But if you say so, dogman...

If you're getting tested for a STD then I can guess how you got that sore throat.

What happened to the second wave? Jake Tapper said today that we might not even be out of the first wave. Does anyone officially know what wave we're in?

Coronavirus update: U.S. braces for third wave; Moderna manages vaccine expectations

We're still in the first wave. Think of a real wave. Waves wash up and blend in with the sand. Our first/current wave never washed up and blended. The Euro graph is a wave.

The Quarantine Strikes Back

The Forum has heard a mysterious broadcast, a threat of BANASHING in the voice of EMPEROR SLYPOKERDOG, Also known as DARTH CANINUS.

He has dispatched secret agents (mods) to ensure despotic rule. The rebels (Liberals) and the Republic (Conservatives) are at odds. There is sinister deception and subversion of Democracy at hand.

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Chris Craig rages in search of the phantom emperor, determined to destroy any threat to his power....

The Return of the Covid

It's a dark time for S2. The mods reign. Having DECIMATED the peaceful OT EMPEROR SLYPOKERDOG deploys his merciless legions to sieze complete control of the forum.

It is a period of civil war. The rebels (liberals) and republic ( conservatives) remain discordant. Though some of the republic have joined forces with the rebels, division endures. Ominous deceit and disruption of democracy persist.

Only SUPREME LEADER CHRIS CRAIG stands against the sweeping tyranny of SLYPOKERDOG also known as DARK CANINUS. He draws ever nearer to the EMPERORS secret location, ready to defeat him at last.

I wanted to show a couple of current graphs, for a reason I'll get to in a minute; a comparison between the US and the EU:

upload_2020-10-20_17-42-16.png

upload_2020-10-20_17-43-11.png

next, a little bookkeeping in that the EU has about 120 million more people in about 1/2 the land mass of the US, so it has much higher population density

now, looking at those two charts you might be tempted to say at least we are doing better here than they are in the EU. That's true mathematically to a degree, but it is missing some critical context that I just watched an epidemiologist on TV outline. That being that when looking at the underlying data and the trend-lines, a different, more disturbing narrative emerges. Underlying data are things like testing rates and more importantly, the positivity rates and which direction they are heading. All indications from that data are that the US is about 3 weeks behind the EU in those curves above, meaning we have not reached the steepest inclines in the curves like the EU has.

the epidemiologist (I'm sorry, I failed to get his name) said we will be entering the worst part of the pandemic for the US since it began; that we are probably headed for the darkest days of the pandemic between now and Thanksgiving. Ain't that a kick in the head
