OT Coronavirus: America in chaos, News and Updates. One million Americans dead and counting

The decision to put teachers ahead of the elderly is not in the CDC guidelines; it’s Governor Brown’s own policy decision. Of course she’s under pressure to get schools opened. A lot of our most economically disadvantaged parents rely on schools for childcare while they work. There are no easy decisions here and I get that. That said, this is a deadly game she’s playing and it’s unlikely to be successful for a whole lot of reasons:

1. Teachers don’t want to go into the classrooms until they’re vaccinated, but even if we manage to get their first shots by the end of the month, they have to wait 3-4 weeks for the second one and won’t have immunity until a couple weeks later. That timeframe doesn’t fit with the Governor’s schedule.

2. Schools are going to spread the virus. While kids don’t get too sick from Covid usually, a recent study showed that they still spread the virus at least 50% as well as adults. No amount of mask-wearing and social distance policies are likely to be ver effective with young kids. In Europe, where they thought they could do school safely, they’re finding with the new more transmissible variant that they are having to close them again. Teachers may be vaccinated, but family members at home won’t be.
I've seen nothing from the CDC about children being 50% as prolific as adults at spreading the disease.
You get a bunch of children in the room and you've got a hot box of potential Covid-19.
I can see the logic swinging both ways so I'd call it a judgement call.

You mean the same CDC that has been so ahead of the the curve on Covid under Trump? In case you haven’t noticed, there’s been more than a little politics involved in the agency’s actions.

Look, there is a new variant of the virus that’s originated in Europe. It’s only now beginning to show up in the US so we don’t have much direct experience with it. Because of its more efficient transmission, it’s expected to be the dominant strain in Oregon by March. That dovetails with when Governor Brown wants to open schools here. In Europe, they thought they could manage the new virus in school settings with masks, hand washing and social distancing. They’ve discovered that they can’t and that the kids are spreading the disease. If reports on that in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal don’t meet your standards for legitimacy, I don’t know what to tell you.

We have an opportunity to get the elderly and most vulnerable citizens vaccinated before the new variant potentially increases spread here. Governor Brown has chosen to squander two weeks of that opportunity to get teachers vaccinated. Based on the virus’s projected rate of spread, we don’t have two weeks. You said it’s a judgment call, and it is. Good judgment calls for weighing the best information available in order to make decisions that impact people’s lives. While we don’t have definitive answers on kids’ impact on spread of the new variant, we certainly have troubling reports out of Europe. In the face of that and the potential cost in human lives and suffering, just what is the hurry here in pushing to open schools?

I last updated the number of people who have passed from Covid to 300,000 on Dec 13th.

100,000 people have passed in just a month.

Prayers.

Let me reiterate, I'm not totally against what your are saying.

Just a last present from Donald Trump.

CBS Medical Director recommends we all wear two masks.

https://www.infowars.com/posts/cbs-medical-editor-says-americans-should-wear-two-masks/

CBS4 Medical Editor Dr. Dave Hnida says that Americans should wear not one but TWO face masks if they want to ensure full protection against COVID-19.

“Specifically what we’re saying is that two masks may actually equal the protection you would get from N-95 masks, which is considered the best mask there is short of a complete respirator-type unit,” Hnida said.

Pointing out that football coaches and Joe Biden have been seen “double masking,” Hnida said, “Even in my own family, when we have outside contact — as limited as it may be — we double mask,” adding that “it’s something you may want to consider.”

However, the report warns that “three masks may be going too far, since that could interfere with the ability to breathe.”

“Like the way one mask does, except three times as bad, so that you actually asphyxiate,” commented Dave Blount.
