Much-Hyped D.C. Trucker Rally Turns Out to Be a Complete Joke

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Only a handful of protesters inspired by anti-vaccine mandate trucker convoys in Canada showed up in the nation’s capital Tuesday afternoon for the “Stage of Freedom” event near the Washington Monument.

Despite the initial hefty estimate that upwards of 3,000 attendees would show, only 12 rally-goers had actually assembled for the gathering just hours ahead of President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address Tuesday evening.

The right-wing rally’s organizer, MMA fighter and Maryland gubernatorial hopeful Kyle Sefcik, opened the event—where press and police massively outnumbered protesters—by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before launching into a lengthy speech mixing shameless self-promotion with grievances aimed at the truckers who didn’t show up.

“I wanted to see with my own eyes what people were really about,” Sefcik said. “As you see, with the millions of hits and the hundreds of thousands of people that are behind the movement, there are still not people showing up and being about it!”

The white supremacist nazi paramilitary trucker attack convoy will be rolling through my area today, apparently. God help us all.

Only time I've had to put a mask on down here in San Diego has been at the airport and in the back of Ubers. Nobody else cares at all.

Former Deputy Accused Of Raping 14-Year-Old Avoids Jail Time And Sex Offender Registry

Prosecutors said former Shelby County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brian Beck raped the minor over a 20-month period of time.

A former sheriff’s deputy in Tennessee who was accused of raping a 14-year-old girl over a period of nearly two years will avoid jail time after pleading guilty to a lesser charge.

Brian Beck, 47, was sentenced to three years probation after pleading guilty to a charge of aggravated assault, according to Memphis Fox 13. Beck, who had worked on the force with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office since 2004, was initially charged with two counts of rape by force or coercion and two counts of sexual battery by an authority figure back in 2018.

Beck was accused of raping the unnamed teenager over a 20-month span beginning in 2016; he was 43 at the time.

According to court documents obtained by Law&Crime, the judge in the case suspended a four-year prison term in favor of probation. The State ordered Beck to have no contact with the victim or her family, be subject to random drug screenings, and serve 150 hours of community service. If Beck violates his probation, he faces the original sentence.

Beck also isn’t required to be part of the sex offender registry.

“Considering all the facts, evidence, and circumstances, as well as all possible defenses that could be raised in trial, this settlement was made in the best interests of obtaining justice for the victim,” a spokesperson with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office told Oxygen.com over email. “The defendant will have a felony on his record, and can no longer carry a gun or be in law enforcement.”

Beck was relieved from his duties without pay following the grand jury’s indictment in 2018.

Beck’s case faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a growing backlog of court cases, as previously reported by NBC affiliate Action 5 News.

“It’s five years,” the victim’s father told the Memphis outlet. “I mean, she needs closure.”

District Attorney Amy Weirich responded to claims that the parties involvedwere not granted their right to a fair and speedy trial, as afforded by the Sixth Amendment of the constitution.

“There’s a whole bunch of factors that go into getting any case ready for trial and in a posture of getting that trial off the ground,” Weirich generalized.

Still, families and advocates continued to voice their frustration, including the father of Beck’s victim, who wished to remain anonymous.

“I mean, there are damages, you know, major damages and unhappiness,” he said. “She just needs some closure. She just needs to see movement of the ball, that’s what she needs to see.”

The District Attorney’s Office said the recent plea deal would spare the victim from having to testify during the trial, according to CBS affiliate WREG 3.

For the original charges, Beck faced 30 years in prison for each of the two rape charges and 15 years for each sexual battery charge, per Tennessee law, for a total of 90 years behind bars. The legal age of consent in the state is 18 years old.

This is in the coronavirus thread because?

Even mild Covid is linked to brain damage, scans show
The new British research is the first to reveal striking differences in areas of the brain based on scans taken before and after a coronavirus infection.

During at least the first few months following a coronavirus infection, even mild cases of Covid-19 are associated with subtle tissue damage and accelerated losses in brain regions tied to the sense of smell, as well as a small loss in the brain’s overall volume, a new British study finds. Having mild Covid is also associated with a cognitive function deficit.

These are the striking findings of the new study led by University of Oxford investigators, one that leading Covid researchers consider particularly important because it is the first study of the disease’s potential impact on the brain that is based on brain scans taken both before and after participants contracted the coronavirus.

“This study design overcomes some of the major limitations of most brain-related studies of Covid-19 to date, which rely on analysis and interpretation at a single time point in people who had Covid-19,” said Dr. Serena S. Spudich, a neurologist at the Yale University School of Medicine, who was not involved in the research.

The research, which was published Monday in Nature, also stands out because the lion’s share of its participants apparently had mild Covid — by far, the most common outcome of coronavirus infections. Most of the brain-related studies in this field have focused on those with moderate to severe Covid.

Gwenaëlle Douaud, an associate professor at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences at Oxford and the paper’s lead author, said that the excess loss of brain volume she and her colleagues observed in brain scans of hundreds of British individuals is equivalent to at least one extra year of normal aging.

“It is brain damage, but it is possible that it is reversible,” she said. “But it is still relatively scary because it was in mildly infected people.”

Apparently, blood type O protects against getting Covid.

Maybe that's why I have been lucky enough not to get it

Good thing there lifting the mask mandate. Let’s all take our masks off so we can get another serge going!

So we are on the road obviously. Nobody in PHX was wearing mask at all. Here in Minny, kinda half and half. Hotel staff, no. Starbucks next-door yes. Arena workers yes. Going to be interesting when we get home and the mandate is lifted on Saturday. I'm sure alot of businesses will keep it going for awhile.

WTF are the Trumpers going to bitch about if the mask mandate is lifted? We must keep it going at all costs. Like the big convoy in DC? What are they even protesting?
Biden is president. That's what they protested.

I believe the core thing with that is the vaccine mandates
