Cronin deserves to be fired for not taking the New Orleans pick. (3 Viewers)

Now that we are at the end of the season, it’s important to remind ourselves that Cronin decided to pass on a top 5 pick in a loaded draft this year for Yang Hansen.
Apparently new ownership LOVES Yang, so I doubt that's gonna happen.

Why do I get the feeling this is going to haunt the franchise for a WHILE.

They got a future 1st and Yang and could it be a mistake -- yes it could be but give Yang an offseason and next year to show something before totally destroying the pick. I mean DC in his first year could only go like 3 to 5 minutes before he was sucking wind and such but this year he can go 30 to 35 minutes easy and is a top 10 to 15 Center in the league.

My biggest issue with the pick is not the player but the reason they might have done it and that is China and getting a small foothold in China and getting them to buy Yang gear etc. If this team was still on a path of rebuilding for another 2 to 3 years then maybe but this team is looking to get back into winning like NOW and that is on the front office and for that reason Cronin and co prolly need to get fired.

the odds are pretty high that the Blazers did pass on the deal that Atlanta got. Not a certainty, but reportedly the Pelicans were shopping for a 10-14 pick in the week preceding the draft. Some will be quick to say that we can't know if the pick became unprotected when Atlanta was on the clock. But again, the Pels were working the phones before draft day; and reportedly the Hawks' FO called more than once to confirm the pick was unprotected. Kind of had to believe this all happened in less than 5 minutes

so yeah....it was a fuckup. It would still have been a fuckup if the pick was top-4 protected this year and unprotected next year

Sorry but this is cope. If Yang is a star you’d see more this year. Maybe at some point he can be a rotation level player. But just on a pure asset value standpoint you could trade the New Orleans pick this year for a star player or keep it and have a much higher ceiling player.

I kind of agreed on your point that the pick might have been wrong but not because of the player but the reasoning behind it but your calling it cope. Heck I even said it might be a mistake just to give Yang another year for the player not the reasoning for the trade cause were stuck with him so we should hope to god that he blows up and becomes a player in this league and not a bust.

This is not cope cause I do feel he was a reach but I am not going to trash the player but feel free to trash the front office for a decision based prolly on money then the team winning.

It was a stupid trade by New Orleans for sure. But it might not be a top 5 pick. Right now, they have the 8th-worst record. They could move up, or they could move down.

I do wonder how many of you really thought the Pelicans would be a lottery team before the start of the season? A lot of talent on that squad.

Can I be mad at made up hypothetical trades that we have no proof were even offered to the team?

Damnit, why didn't the blazers make that trade that did that thing that clearly they should have done despite no proof it was on the table!!!?

One of New owners (possibly the Panda Express guy) specifically mentions China and Hansen Yang in the introductory press conference. I think there is a good chance ownership looks at this very differently than some fans do.
ownership could have loved Keljin Blevins...that didn't make him a better player

If so, depressing. If they value PR and overseas merch sales above winning players, what an indictment on ownership and their priorities.

Yang is going to surprise people who look at him as a bust. He's just getting started. Clingan didn't light up the world rookie season, nor did Jokic. This is pretty much a fantasy draft thread projecting the next Scoot Henderson will be better than Yang. Yang comes with a billion fans as it is. Scoot has some in Atlanta. I remember how Zion was supposed to become the dominant player of his generation as well. You win some, you lose some but we didn't lose picking Yang from what I've seen. He's a hard working, smart 7 footer with a decent shot. I don't get the Yang hate. I hope it's not politically motivated but sometimes I think that's part of it. Yang is not a reason to fire Cronin. Not saying Cronin's job is safe but I don't think this is the issue. Yang's a great passer but what works in the G league will get picked off in the NBA. He needs more zip on his pass. A lot of Blazers need more zip on their passes.

Lots of well sourced reporting indicated that this trade was available to everyone in the lottery between 8-13. And just think logically: is your contention that New Orleans would offer an unprotected pick and 23 to get the 13th pick in the draft but not the 11th pick in the draft? That makes no sense.

for those that enjoy picks at scabs:

keep in mind that what Atlanta got in the trade is the most favorable of the New Orleans and the Milwaukee picks

right now Pels are in 8th and Bucks are in 10th. So Atlanta has a 40.1% chance of a top-4 pick

however, the Pels last 2 games are @Boston and @Minny. If they lose both and end up 6th in the lottery they'd have a 48% chance at a top 4 pick; or 51% if there are no ties

From Sam Quinn at CBS citing The Chicago Tribune among many others:

“Dumars did indeed call other teams picking between No. 8 and No. 12 trying to make this trade and was rebuffed”

Now you can concede the point.
Concede what point?

I believe I read “they presumably could have looped in Portland”

THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE MAD ABOUT? That they PRESUMABLY could have made a trade with our Blazers? THAT is what you are all worked up about?
What in the actual hell is going on here?

The only point I’ll concede is you need to get a hobby son! Keep on keepin’ on I guess.

Logical fallacy to continue to play dumb on this

Even so, taking away the fact that we wouldn't have known how bad the Pelicans would be this year, what we can see is how Coward and Queen have played. Taking Yang, and doubling down on the center position, one that this board has said many times over is the least important position for a contending team, is not looking great right now. Coupled with the fact that so many people lost their minds at the magnitude of the reach, the move deserves scrutiny.

Of course the Magic pick could totally redeem things. But that is an unknown at this time. We can only hope Yang improves to be a backup center (yay) and that the pick helps improve the team.
