It's kinda funny that people are using the "he hasn't shown much" line to argue that montero should be cut.

You realize he's a project right? He doesn't even play in games. There's no way you can sit there and honestly come to a conclusion on the guy based off of 10 minutes of play. Be real. That's not how projects work. I can guarantee the teams decision won't be based off of what he did in the limited time he got in summer league and preseason. The decision is much bigger than that. It's does this guy have the mental and physical ability to learn and improve, and develop into a player that can actually stick? Only and literally only the coaching staff can know that answer.

THANK YOU.

Uhhhhh no. Crabbe was a Pac 12 player of the year. Montero is 22 and can't even tie his own shoes. He is not that young, and frankly hasn't shown shit. He wasn't even that good at the community college level. People just freak out of his body type. I see a skinny, guy that's a lost project. Sure, keep him over pressey if you really want. But there are more talented guys that will be released this week I'd rather take a chance on

You really think the reason people think he has potential is because of his body? Tons of basketball players have that body type.. That's definitely not it. And what makes you think Perry Jones has more potential? He hasn't shown much of anything in his three years in the league, is older than Montero, and got cut for a reason. I really don't get why you're so deadset against Montero.

We are talking about a guy that only played community college basketball, is 22, and would be laughed off the court.

Perry Jones had a game last year where he scored 32 points, got a block, seven rebounds and a few assists. He also got to the free throw line, hit threes and ended up shooting almost 60% from fg range.

Luis Montero will never in his wildest dreams have a game that comes close to thatin the nba.

Quit dreaming.

I'll add that Perry Jones just turned 24, and had that game last year as a freshly turned 23 year old.

I'd be willing to bet Montero wouldnt post a game like that in the next year.

Dude you need to relax a bit... We're talking about the 15th spot on a bad team.

PJ3 has a career PER of 8.5, even his career Per 36 numbers are only 10.5 pts and 5.1 reb... And he had 2 years of College ball and has had 3 years of NBA coaching, and he's about to get cut. Personally I'm not jumping up and down about the prospect of picking up 4th year guys who can't make the cut after camp. It's not like they have much left to prove, and they have been given a chance to prove it.

I resent that statement!

Buahahahahah relax? I'm perfectly fine. Thanks for the concern though.

Nice to see Montero is everyones prized piece this year.

How do you know he won't play at all for his career? Look at many players in the league that a lot didn't know about and/or thought they would not even get playing time in their careers and end up actually having a good career.

Montero in a way reminds me of when we brought Outlaw in. Nobody knew who he was, everyone thought he was brainless and sucked and wanted no part of him staying on the team. Then he turned out OK for us. Thats what we should hope Montero or Alexander develop into, a backup.

Maybe not exactly apples to oranges but......Billy Ray Bates comes to mind....though his "great" career was a short one.....

I loved Outlaw's career here in Portland. I'm glad we took the chance on him.

Dude RELAX. There have been tons of players drafted in the first round who made great improvements in their 4th year. I can't think of any 22 year old who was average in junior college contributing in the NBA.

Well yeah except Outlaw could jump over 40", touch the top of the backboard and was 18 years old out of high school.

Other than that their similar.....?

Nobody here is really acting like Montero is a "prized piece".. We think he's an intriguing 15th man. For some reason you're just overreacting to people saying he has potential to get better and you think you know that he's absolute garbage and will never be any good after only seeing him play limited minutes in summer league and preseason.

That is exactly the point.

If he was showing ANY potential in practice, don't you think that Stotts would at least throw him out there for 5-10 minutes in a pre-season game? He can practice & scrimmage all he wants, but game time is different. Even to have a few minutes of that experience is very valuable when you are as raw as Montero.

I fully understand why people want to keep him and why they view him as a "project". I don't think there is anyone who disagrees with that idea. Most of the people who think Montero will be cut just believe there are better "Projects" out there to invest in.

I wish we'd have asked Mike Rice at the Meet & Greet for his take on Montero. It would have been interesting and we might have learned something. Damn it Sly! It's all your fault.

Count me as one who thinks 15th guy on a rebuilding roster isn't worth very much. Have the guy play D League if you think he's got the potential, which costs the roster spot as well. Likely, he doesn't have the potential.

In fact, if Neil does a 1 for 2 trade, or takes on a guy for salary alone (any time this season), the 15th guy is going to be cut.

Yup good post.

I'll follow that up with reports from people close to the team. Casey Holdahl said Montero has a long ways to go and he has never seen anything close to this level of competition. Gunderson wrote an article about how raw the kid was. We've seen reports of how Cliff Alexander tore up practice and had admiration from coaches, players, and the media. Cliff is still unlikely to play meaningful minutes at all this year but there is a glimpse of a legit NBA skill. There are none of these reports with Montero.

Guys I have a friend. He's 6'6 240 and played high school ball fairly well.

Check yourself bruh. I've said I don't care if we keep him as a 15th man. But there will be better players cut by teams that are better than Montero I'd rather have

The thing that is being overlooked here in regards to Montero is he has played a total of 2 years of organized ball, 1 year in High School and 1 year of community college. Prior to that he was in the Dominican Republic. Of course he is going to look lost at times... but he also showed our management enough in summer league to give him a contract for fall.

Sounds like Tyrus Thomas.

This is where I come down. Pointing out that he's 22 intimates that he is likely as close to his ceiling as an average 22 year old NBA player. Thing is, most NBA 22-year-olds have had, by that point, at least six combined years of AAU coaching, D1 college coaching, and NBA coaching. Montero has basically had as much real coaching as a high school senior. IMO, he should be thought of like one.

Luis Montero is untouchable around here.

Even if a guy like Pj3 is cut (even though many of us were hoping for him this offseason) we can't cut Montero. He's a future all star
If we keep Montero, I hope he is/will be.

Only I got say is 4 players that didn't play better be holding there breaths. For simple reason there will cuts in two days and none expect to be in the rotation so is there possibility that all 4 players get cut and Neil find some off the waiver wire.

So we might cut Kaman, Hendo, Aminu and Cliff?
