All this talk about AD potentially declining his supermax to become a FA and essentially force a trade gets me thinking. Dame will also be eligible for a four year extension this summer at 35% of the cap. He can choose to wait and if he makes another all NBA team next season, he'd automatically be eligible for a 5 year extension.

Either way, we'd lock him in through his prime at a huge #.





Would you offer that? The ownership issue is on the back of my mind, but I think it's a no-brainer. The % of cap is the biggest hurdle to get over, but with a clean slate coming in 20-21, I think a new GM can build around him.

How do you build around someone that accounts for more than a third of the payroll?

I don't follow the NFL close enough to be sure I have the details right, but my impression is that Detroit (Stafford), Atlanta (Ryan), and Green Bay (Rogers) all struggled to field balanced rosters after breaking the bank over their star QBs.

So...I looked it up and there's not a ton of separation between the $20M+ crew, but the three I listed are all in the top-5 (with #4 being a mistake by any measure), so it doesn't appear to be completely unfounded:

The NFL is more of a team game, making it extremely difficult for one star player to get it done on their own. However, the biggest knock on Dame is lack of playoff success, with many pointing to lack of help when teams pressure him. That's a pretty strong parallel.

I'd offer it to him. I'm not sure there's really an alternative. Yeah, it's going to make roster building tough, but it's going to be hard to build a contender in this NBA landscape we're in regardless.

The last couple years of the deal will likely suck though.

As much as I like Dame, unless there is at least a Finals appearance before that contract, there is NO WAY I sign him to that percentage of the cap especially when he is on the other side of 30. Ageing players and massive contracts very rarely work out well. Add into the discussion that Dame is at best an average defender and on some nights, well below that.

So you are then paying a huge portion of the cap to an aging player who is very good on one side of the ball and not very good on the other. I just can't see that contract aging well at all. Love Dame, but I think that would hamstring the franchise for years to come.
