Deandre Ayton appreciation post

Thybulle shot 39% from 3 last season and is shooting 39% from 3 this season. I'd prefer as many 39% 3s as teams care to allow Portland to shoot

Same argument was made for Aminu.

Problem is guys like that aren't going to shoot 11 threes and they sure as hell aren't shooting 39% or whatever on that kind of volume.

Having a player out there that teams are willing to ignore is never good for your overall offense.

So everyone, only five games in, is Ayton earning his contract? Putting up 10/14 currently on 60% from the field and 100% from the line. I have no doubt his PPG will go up, possibly double of what it is now. He did not have a good game against Embiid, but few do. Suns didn't think he would ever have success against Jokic.

I don't think most fans ever think players are worth what they make. I get that we have to deal with a salary cap so it is a factor, but I try not to dwell on how much they make.

What a post. Over the couse of his 10 year career, Aminu never shot 39% from 3's. Hell, half of his seasons he shot that or less from the field overall. Where & why in the world are you pulling 11 as some sort of needed threshold of 3 point attempts for a player to be effective? Thybulle is only averaging 16.8 MPG this season. Prorate Steph Curry's stats this year for 16.8 minutes a night and he only averages 6.4 attempts so by your silly logic he's bad for the W's offense too? Per minute this year, Thybulle is taking the 3rd most attempts on the team so it's ridiculous to call him gun shy. Lastly, I'm watching the games and the opposing D is not ignoring Mattise on the perimeter. It would be stupid to, but they're not. He shoots them when he has an open look and isn't an off the dribble end of the clock option, but most of the time the D is stretched out to the line defending him because he has been making them pay for leaving him.

You're not watching close enough then. Go watch all of matisse's attempts on NBA stats and come back to me. I hope your conclusion is a little different.

And thank you for taking my post as literal as possible. Matisse has the opportunity to take 27 threes if he was on the floor long enough due to how teams defend him. Curry not so much.

And the Aminu reference was regarding his track record in the playoffs. It was the same story every year. Force Dame and CJ to direct as much of the offense to Aminu and Harkless as possible. The bet teams were making was they weren't going to take enough threes or make quality enough decisions when they'd inevitably turn those attempts down to make them move their defensive attention elsewhere. Regardless of what aminu (or any of our other limited wings we've had in the past) shot from three, he always had massive negative effects on our playoff offenses.

pointing to overpaid players in the NBA is a full-time job...there are too many

IMO, Ayton is not worth his contract. But I'm coming at that from a point that says that C's, unless they are elite like Jokic & Embiid (and maybe AD when healthy), simply don't have the kind of impact to justify 25M/year, let alone 34M/year. Most playoff level teams don't invest a lot in the C position; and some of those who do live to regret it

with Ayton+Williams+Reath, the Blazers are paying C's 48M/year. That's 35% of the cap for what might be the least important position on the floor; and there's very little versatility in that trio. Williams might get away with playing PF in certain situations, but those situations don't occur too often

it's true that it probably doesn't matter much if the payroll is out of whack on a lottery team

lol, thanks but my percerption is still great and I'm fine with disagreeing with you as I feel you are way off in your perceptions and conclusions.

do you think posters should read your posts creatively? Good grief man, I'm expecting what I'm reading to be whats intended

missed my point entirely, this is getting really tiresome

how in the world is the reader supposed to know that if you don't say it? Regardless, it's a terrible comparison that you're welcome to stand by

Let’s call October a feeling out period. He’s having a REALLY solid November.

16/11.5/1.5/4/1 on .625/.000/.100

That’s about as good as you can hope for. Engaged on defense. Most of his FGA outside of his post up on Tillman, I had no problem with. Great attitude out there so far. Not doing too much on offense right now. I’m so excited to see how the two long term forwards will be, assuming Shae slides over to SG because Ant is traded.

All I'm saying is that players that teams are willing to leave open consistently and are also limited passers, ball handlers and decision makers don't do your offense any favors and you decided to latch on to a small piece of my post and make the biggest NBA strawman possible.

Being this strongly opposed to the idea that Matisse is not a helpful offensive NBA player is an odd hill to stand on.

I will be first to admit - while I still have issues with Aytons “screens” - he has been a lot better than I thought he would be. Gladly eating crow on that (so far).

Still think he’s overpaid, but it’s not my skrilla.

Plus, he is mobile enough to actually fit Chauncey's defensive schemes. Much better fit for us, as currently constructed, than the previous guy, who really should be only playing in drop coverage.

I can't wait for Scoot to return, because Billups seems to have zero desire to use Ayton in the offense.

Last night, Ayton calmly drilled an open 18-footer like it was a free throw. Never saw that shot again. Against a high-scoring team, that's not the go-to shot, but in a struggle like last night, Ayton's offense could have given the Blazers a comfortable victory instead of a nail-biter filled with Jerami Grant misses.

You lost me on this one. How does Scoot's return help Ayton shoot 20-footers?

The 2nd paragraph refers only to last night.

Throwing the ball to Ayton for an 18-footer has a difficulty level of zero.

Ayton seems to win most of the jump balls. Is that a stat that's recorded?

I like the opening tip play we've done the past 2 games trying to get him a lob right away. Am guessing that there's a counter move that we're holding on to as well, once teams get used to us trying that out.
I like it as well, it just gets him involved early. He’s had 2 very solid games so far. I don’t mind finding ways to get DA his 1st basket to start the game if it guarantees the defensive effort he’s put in the last 2 games.

The Twittersphere has Deandre Ayton as a possible defensive first team this year.

Your link has updated to Rudy Gobert but still DA looks pretty good at second lowest.

That is the way it was when I saw it. Somehow, I missed putting in the '2nd' part before lowest. Thanks for the catch. :twothumbs:

He is averaging 8.9 shots per game while putting up a paltry 0.4 fts per game. Also facing a career low in usage.

Our guards and wings aren't good enough to freeze one of our most efficient offensive players like this.

Figure it out Chauncey.

Chauncey has tried nothing and he’s all out of ideas!
