Zombie Derrick Jones to Portland (1 Viewer)

Every team wants that. Every team wants their guys to be good on offense, good on defense, good teammates, good rebounders, good passers. But in the real world that doesn’t exist. There aren’t 400 Lebrons out there. So when Olshey brings in a guy who doesn’t shoot well, this place melts down. It’s absurd.
Because guys who cant shot have been a huge liability in the Playoffs, this has been our biggest weakness because opponents dont guard them and dare them to shot. This dude is a worse shooter than Aminu and Harkless, who were liabilitys on offense

Fucking people with their fucking obsession with 3 pt shooting. Dude is an ELITE defender.

We absolutely blow defensively, and NO got two very good wing defenders

And the next time Dame gets buried under multiple defenders and play-off level defense, we can take comfort in that.

I used to coach D2 basketball in Southern California. I was young and would get frustrated with a guy who was 6’9’ but a total puss. Finally our head coach said “if he wasn’t a puss, he’d be playing at UCLA, not here”. So when a team gets a guy like Derrick Jones, who is 23 and far from perfect I immediately think about the kid I coached who was not perfect but if he was we wouldn’t have him. If Jones was great offensively guess what we’d have no shot. You have to have guys who are imperfect. Might as well be a 23 year old freak athlete who likes playing defense.
You have a point here.
If DJJ was shooting 40% from three and 67% from 2 while being a great defensive stopper exactly how much would he be worth at 23 years old?
Okay right now he is getting 67% from 2 and a good defensive stopper that guards the 3 point line top five in the league and can improve at shooting threes and hits FT's at 77+%? How much is he worth at 23 years old?
Anyone saying this is a terrible signing isn't thinking this through.
The part that seems scary is the second year. If he doesn't fit at all and becomes tough to trade Portland might get stuck with 9 Million next year. If he improves a bunch he might opt out and then Portland has to pay more to keep him. I wish that was a team option. I'm sure people would look at it different it it was.
Bottom line it's still only 2 years max and it isn't completely outrageous. (Thinking ET 17 million a year)

It's crazy how the same people who hated the Aminu/Harkless pairing because of their shooting are excited about the acquisitions of forwards that shot 33.5% and 28.0% from 3 last year.
The difference between them and this guy well at least between Jones and Aminu is that when Jones starts dribbling I don't cringe... the guy knows how to get to the hoop and score in a definitive way. Also I like his shot, its got really good form so I do think his percentage has a great chance to go up in this offense in which he will be taking more set shots. Also his combination of defensive intensity and athleticism is another thing I'm excited about. Everyone in the media thinks that this was a great pick up. It's only fans of this team that don't seem to want to at least give Jones a chance to prove he's worth the money.

I like the signing. Last year i felt we really missed aminu and harks defense. This guy will be a defensive presence and attack the rim...blazers were a bit on the sodt side there. He'll be like our kersey hopefully.

How is Jones any different/better?
You ask how is this kid better than Aminu???
Just take a walk back on memory lane and look at every time Aminu put the ball on the floor and tried to drive to the basket? TRAIN WRECK TIME!
DJJ can actually dribble a basketball and make a dunk.
Then remember Aminu shot about 27% from 3 until he got here. Then he shot about 35% except when the game was on the line. Then as soon as he left Portland his 3 point shooting went back down to 25%

While Aminu was here he might have been the hardest working Blazer not named Lillard but Stotts put him in the very best position he could possibly be in to excel. I know people on this board hate Stotts but it's true. Just look at careers of players like Aminu and Harkless.
DJJ will be fine. Look for his shooting to improve drastically as well.

The slightest amount of ball movement eliminates that issue
The issue obviously isn't having enough three point shooting otherwise the traps wouldn't have been a problem last season. The issue is when Dame passes out of the traps our guys (usually CJ) don't take swift and decisive enough action to take advantage of the four on three situation and make teams pay for aggressively trapping Dame like that. If you are open take the damn shot and if you're covered either find the open man or rotate the ball until it finds the open man. Our guys (Nurk sometimes but mostly CJ) just get the ball and wait to set up the half court offense. Why wouldn't opponents continue to blitz Dame like that? Also it doesn't have to be a three to punish teams for that kind of pressure, one defender will be out of position and an explosive slasher can get to the hole for a dunk if the out of position defender has left a driving lane open. This shit is grade school level basketball.

Would've loved Jamychal with us, but he's not the defender DJjr is. I also was keen on getting Kenrich Williams at the minimum, but same goes for him.

Bowman is a good get as well, like that signing a lot, reminds me somewhat of the role Napier would play for us. Now lets get Damyean Dotson and resign Gabriel.

Yeah, I pray DJJ can raise his 3P% by 8 percentage points as well. Doesnt happen often.
Doesn't really need to go up 8 percentage points but that would be great. The one thing that would be nice IMO is up 4 or 5 points and being able to make one under pressure. Aminu crumbled when in end game situations it seemed.
Then of course there was any time he put the ball on the floor? That was kind of ugly you must admit.

Uh, I'll say Stotts utilized him well if I see him being utilized well.
I don't see him starting. Best you are going to see is second unit with the runners and then in specific situations late game defensive possessions. That in my book would be using him well. 1M and him could be fun to watch running the court? Simons can work the ally ooop as well as anyone on the team. So 8-10 mins max for this guy unless he gets much better shooting the 3. Then of course you have filling in for injuries. He does provide an element of depth.

As has been pointed out Comparing DJJ to Aminu isn't a good match. But Harkless maybe a bit more. Of course i really didn't want to lose Harkless so i guess that explains that.

Two observations:
1. Derrick Jones played 24 mpg for the Heat in the regular season... but only 8 in the playoffs. When the Heat wanted to up their game, they sat him (like Kendrick Nunn - who actually played almost double Jones' minutes in the playoffs)
2. The Nuggets just signed Green, who plays a position of greater need for us, for less:

Then he isn't very good at his job. Salesman is part of it.

okay so whats your sales capture rate tpup?

me thinks you dont know how sales works. If you think the top salesman close 50% of thier quotes/ speels...

The best of salesmen close aprox 35-40 percent.

Last month, 100%.
This year, almost 90%
Last year, just over 90%

Guess I just have a different perspective. Perhaps we should chat.

then you are an extremely rare breed....

sales is not like that in real world.

Of course it depends on the market. But to think salesmen should close 100% is not realistic.

Perfect move defensively. We're needed two-way players though. Apparently you don't value the offensive end of the ball for a guy like Jones.

You know what else is funny about this? That 85% of these same people will clamor for Demar Derozan, esp if it means trading CJ.
Been highly against DeRozan so I'm not sure about that.

People used those two to justify expecting guys like Evam Turner, Mario Hezonja, and Kent Bazemore to have shooting increases. We shouldn't just expect players to improve 8% IMO. He got great looks in Miami too.

Never said anything about that I think salesman should close 100%. You'll have to let me know where that came from.
