Zombie Derrick Jones to Portland

I really think Neils decision to shake things up and take some risks put pressure on Stotts, not just because he has more talent, but Neils butt is on the line with all these decisions. Neil isn’t going to sit and watch DJJ or whoever else misused or benched. Not going to happen. This might be the season that makes a lot of fans happy one way or the other.

Stotts really has no excuses now.

I agree.
My only problem with that statement is that it can quickly change.
How about we let the season start at least first before we go all in on what should happen.

He’s gonna wear 55 that’s dope who’s the last guy that wore that shit

Jesus. When was the last time we had such a high flyer? Outlaw? DMiles? After my initial disappointment with giving him full MLE, he might turn out to be my favorite player this yr.

Really wish we'd add a Defensive minded coach.
I agree completely but not just a defensive minded coach, a tough one that holds guys accountable and calls them out for boneheaded shit. I think Stotts' style can work but it needs something to counterbalance it. We need a bad cop to Stotts' good cop, obviously the coaching style will stay more encouragement than accountability because Stotts is the head coach but a little in game accountability would be so good for these guys.

Judging from Nekias Duncan, of BasketballNews.com and all things Miami according to Dan Marang, Jones can't dribble at all and does not hit the corner '3' which is the one he needs to hit as a wing. He was very good in the zone system that Miami runs but they do a very good job of putting people in a position to where they play the best defense they can.

Of the contract Jones got, Duncan said, 'good for him' but that didn't sound overly positive for what he could do for the Blazers. His comments also consisted of, "I don't want to be too negative", and overall, left you wondering what the positives were outside of dunking. Working off of Dame will be different than he's ever done before but he is better in the short roll than as a screen setter where Dame is pulling up from 30'.

Interesting take from someone who has seen him a lot. Marang calls him the best athlete the Blazers have had in 20 years....but then refers to Dame as the worst lob passer for an elite PG in NBA history. (laughs) Says Nurk is the best lob passer.

Mike Rice lives in Florida and has seen him play a LOT. He basically says that he will excel if used properly.

...."if used properly." That will be interesting to see how that works out.

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!

Who do people honestly think are smarter - Olshey/Stotts or Riley/Spoelstra? Who got the most out of Jones they could and then let him walk? Who signed him to play in a system where he may not fit? The more I look at this signing, the less optimistic I am about it.

Olshey/Stotts vs Riley/Spo....ugh, that isn't pretty.

Interesting that we heavily criticized Neil for paying Meyers 10 million per year, and Riley just did the same.

Yeah, and while I hated that contract and thought/think he's a shitty player, at least Portland paid him in hopes he'd improve and earn the contract. Miami is paying him after seeing him play for them last year and the previous 7 years in Portland.

The Blazers excuse is that they hoped he got better. I'm not sure what Miami's excuse can be.

For the people here who said they like the DJJ addition a lot better because he'll be coming off the bench as opposed to starting like Harkless did: Would you still feel great about it if he's starting as that's seeming more and more possible?

I like him more as a starter than off the bench. I want him playing with dame and nurk, our two best playmakers who can get him the ball off cuts.

I get what you're saying... you have confidence we will have enough spacing on the floor that teams won't dare him to shoot/be a play maker?

He's a well below average shooter and ball handler for his position. I fear the Covington/DJJ tandom will look a lot like Aminu/Harkless and I don't want our playoff hopes to depend on them hitting 3's.
