derrick jones jr can contribute to this team, but only if used properly, so if he stays with the team, lets hope billups plays him to his strengths

lobs, cutters, easy baskets in general, occasional 3-pointer and im genuinely intrigued how he does in billups defensive scheme(s)

One year of 10 million or multi-year for less?

I'm guessing he talked with Chauncey because there's no chance in hell he would have come back under Stotts.

I'm guessing he (or his agent) knew he was making twice as much money (if not more) than he should and would've been back regardless.

Olshey will be now be getting Christmas cards from DJJ, Evan Turner, Pau Gasol, Meyers, Festus, and Crabbe

Am I the only person who felt that Stotts had no clue how to use DJJ and we could have used him better?

No, it’s obvious that DJJ plays better in a flowing offense and not a pick and role iso offense. One of the reasons a guy like Simmons would be so valuable is he would push the tempo and DJJ, Powell, Ant, and Nas would get a lot easier buckets.

I agree t00. There were plenty of games that I posted here after he had a good game.
Maybe not 10 million worth but that was not your question. He just did not fit in this offense.

If he hit the market, would he get a contract as good or better? (the correct answer is "hell no")

That right there is strong evidence this is bad news for the team. Of course, the fact Olshey gave him as much as the Sun's gave Crowder should have been a red flag from day one.

Combination of a couple players and getting both Nurk and Zach back for a full season will do wonders.
People have seemed to forget the Blazers only had Nurk for the Bubble and Zach was only there three games and a portion of the bubble.
Now you start a season with both and add a couple wings that play defense and this team will not be 29th in the league on defense. My bet is top 10 maybe but certainly top 15.
:(

This is not bad. It wouldn't have freed up any money and he can now be used as a salary matching piece.

Will just trading CJ, signing Norman, and putting DJJ at the three under a new coach make a difference?

Just trading CJ is kind of a funny way to say that. I think only the Knicks have the cap space to just absorb CJ's contract so we'll obviously be getting something in return. I think for some teams CJ has a ton of value, even at 30M per season. It's Olshey's job to find those teams and get a return from them that fits on this team. That most likely means bringing back a forward that would work better in our starting lineup than DJ does.

DJJ is a huge asset

1. DJJ at 24 has the athleticism if others will set him up. Think Layman injected with espresso. Rudy Fernandez dunking. But who did that for him last season? It wasn't a point of emphasis for Stotts even as a feint.
2. His 3's at 31.6% last season but not at volume is at least in the right direction.
3. Gotta have contracts to make trades work, and his is a good number for that.
4. His opt-in makes other moves (more) possible. Powell re-upping is the lynchpin -- I prefer him to CJ paired with Dame in the back court.

I meant an asset as a player but mostly in a trade

Maybe Neil Olshey knew what he was talking about. DJJ looking like peak Tayshaun Prince. The kind of player you need to win a title.

DJJ now earns the vet minimum. At that level or even the tax MLE he is fine to have at the end of a rotation. The problem was the Blazers giving him more money and hard capping the franchise, the Blazers trying to use him as big mpg starter, then the Blazers having to give up the pick to Chicago in part to get out of his contract.

Overreactions-R-Us. You could say the same thing about Thybulle or Ed Davis or Arron Afflalo or Seth Curry right after they have a good game.

this is his 7th season, and his best season statistically, and he averaged 9 & 3. That's not worth an MLE and if a GM's coach couldn't get the most out of a GM's players, that's on the GM

DJJ has been a huge part of their success. He may be their third best player, not end of the rotation

DJJ has been having a good game every night. Have you been watching?

sometimes I watch and what I've see with my eyes tends to match the stats

in the playoffs, for the Mavericks, Jones ranks:

9th in PER
8th in TS%
7th in FT rate
10th in rebound rate
12th in assist rate
7th in 3ptFG%
4th in block rate
7th in winshares
10th in winshares/48
8th in DBPM
9th in BPM
11th in defensive rating
8th in offensive rating

he's shot incredibly well in the last 2 games going 14-21. But in the 2 games prior he went 4-22. He's kind of the same as he has always been: a low usage role player who doesn't shoot well enough to be 3&D. A low-rent glue guy who plays versatile defense
