The only way that the Mariners will ever compete (again) is if they have direct competition. As of right now, they're making (iirc) money hand over fist, and don't need to be competitive.

IMHO, although not necessarily to the same degree, the Winterhawks success, and the Timbers being insanely popular, did play a role in whether or not the Blazers made changes to improve the team/franchise.
