The only way to fix the ref problem? Separate the refs completely from the NBA ala bring in an independent organization to cover everything ref wise. Hell, use the goddamn ad money from jersey patches for it. Sign a contract with the organization for a fixed amount per year, so they have no care about the results of games. The independent organization would be totally transparent and provide information like:

-Totals for correct, wrong call, and missed calls for both teams over the course of a game. These totals can be broken down per ref. Have a 5 person panel review each game (3 person majority to decide whether call was missed or not) after its completion and publish a report the following morning.
-Referee pages (much like player pages), where one can see a referee's stats (correct call percentage, wrong/missed call percentage, home-bias, better-team bias, star-player bias, etc.)
-The top refs each year get to referee the playoffs, giving incentive for a referee to call games as accurately as possible so they can work more games. Refs can improve based off of performance reviews showing where they struggle.
-Poor performing refs would be subject to lower wages the following year or even a non-renewal of their contract.
-Suggest warnings and fines to the NBA based off of flops (1 of the 5 panel members would look out for this)
-Suggest warnings and fines to the NBA based off of too much complaining during a game (This would be amazing! No one wants to see Glenn Rivers and others bitch and moan all game. They stick a microphone in a coaches face during the heat of battle then fine them if they say anything bad about the refs (Stan Van Gundy). However, they allow coaches and refs to show their displeasure all game long without any sort of action. It makes no sense why a couple words get fined $25000 but constant whining all game, game in and game out is okay)

The NBA giving referee responsibilities to and independent organization would be a great PR move, as there would be no doubt going into the future that they are rigging games. It would also show effort to try and fix one of the worst problems in the NBA that they have consistently ignored. I think it may keep more people interested in watching more games without as much BS that goes on now, which would increase their profit. The referee's union probably would be upset at this idea as it holds them accountable, however, a slight raise in wages would make them more likely to agree. And even if they don't, the NBA can give them no choice.. If they wanna stay an NBA ref they have to go along with the change in organization.

Damian Lillard calls timeout and it is granted. After the whistle is blown DeAndre Jordan procedes to snatch the ball out of his hand yanking his right shoulder.

Easy Tech.

Chris Kaman lightly holds DeAndre Jordan and the foul is called. After the whistle is blown Jamal Crawford intentionally shoves Chris in the back.

Easy Tech.

People actually question whether reffing is biased or not, when all this just happened in the very last game played??

Just watched game 1 of Cavs Vs Pistons.
A very strong showcase of NBA rigging right there.

SVG said at the 2nd quarter ESPN interview that his players gotta understand that Lebron is not going to get offensive foul calls because he gets to do what he wants.

Epic post right here.

Yeah... No.... That makes absolutely no sense. So we're going to use replacement referees that have never refereed an NBA game before? You'd really be pissed then.

Lots of those things are already covered and not even upset. I remember distinctly when they made excessive complaining and technical foul and for some reason or another they stopped calling it.

I didn't read the whole thread cause I'm tired and about to go to bed..so I apologize if this point was brought up. I also agree that there is some superstar bias in the NBA. And the Blazers probably get the short end of that stick. But just to play devil's advocate..superstars are superstars for a reason. They're really really good. That makes them harder to guard by even the best defensive players, and therefore more likely to get fouled because that's the only way to stop them from scoring easily.

If your going to fine coaches and players about referee to the nation then you must fine referee for there poor performance in the game. Yes there going miss some calls there human but you call the game the same on both ends.

Ass clowns like Canzano should write about real shit like this

Superstars are really good but when they make the same play as someone else and it's called differently, that is where most people have an issue. They are already better, why give them an additional advantage?

Last night I was watching a game and a rookie took a charge. The commentator immediately said something to the effect of, 'you're too young to get that call'. Well that is BS. Age has nothing to do with whether it's a foul or not but it's widely accepted that rookies are going to get called for things that veterans and certainly star players won't.

Reminds me of celebrities getting all sorts of free stuff.

Yeah this biased, twisted culture needs to be called attention to...a call by the refs is not something that should be based on age or experience in the NBA. A foul is a foul, and needs to be called regardless. This corrupt and fraudulent system brings great shame to the game of basketball, degrades and discredits the play of many players in the NBA, and defrauds the fans.

You'd negotiate with NBA refs if they even have a problem at all. You do what you can to keep most of them. A few new refs wouldnt affect the overall improvement of the system...

They get a few new refs every year, and the same things happen... so...

The same things happen because of the system... because they work for the NBA.

If they didn't work for the NBA, the conspiracy theory would be that the NBA is paying this new referees' organization to rig games the way they want. Any time major amounts of money are at stake, these types of theories are popular.

If the NBA were currently indoctrinating every referee they employ, it would come out. Conspiracies work when only a few people are involved. When tons of people are involved, there's no way to keep it a secret.

You honestly don't think NBA would use an independent company and keep them... independent, do you? They realize they got the sports fan by the balls, they have no pushback for change... same with the NFL.

I think the game wasn't exactly fairly reffed 10 years ago and probably before that as well. Stars and Markets seem to be preferential treatment when something was on the line. With Stern out and Silver in the NBA has taken a little twist. The NBA no longer needs the big markets to pull in crowds and sales, of course its better when the big markets are in the big games but its no longer a big issue because of all the outlets for fans and media. The money and explosure is still there if the Star is in a small market just as it is in a big market, the big market pays more but sure but its no longer a giant loss of revenue to allow the small markets win and the big markets lose.
Reffing is just something that is a really hard job to do and no matter how good a job a ref does one side thinks they stunk. Reffing almost seems to be more about the reputation a team has then whats actually going on on the court. Sure CP3 gets away with a ton but its not just on Dame, watch CP3 guard Curry and CP3 will foul Curry all night long and the refs wont call them all. Its very similar to the Seahawks in 2013 or the Broncos last year, both had a D that got away with murder but thats simply because they had a correct mentality of "the refs can't call it everytime" and used it to there advantage. Thats what the clippers are doing to us and its up to the Blazers to either decide that they will give as good as they get or to try and figure out a way to play around the constant grabbing/shoving/illegal screen setting and everything else the Clippers will do.

Even if they were "independent", they would STILL be working for the NBA.

MLB is run by an indenpent umpire organization (Unioned and all), and they still cater to stars.

Greg Maddux was routinely given 6 inches off the plate on either side, as just an example.

The NBA was worse 10+ years ago. The Shaq/Kobe days were ridiculous.

I think you'll see a much more evenly called game tonight.

I love that the photo on this article had Scott Foster checking the replay....worst ref in the league (followed by Violet Palmer)

Violet Palmer gets a bad rap but she's actually a great referee.

Well she must have improved a lot since the last stretch of games I watched her ref...I thought she was terrible
