This and the fact that the degree doesn't mean you really paid attention to the courses...a self taught person knows how to obtain knowledge and wisdom without a professor...Henry Ford was one of those guys. When asked a question concerning his lack of education once Ford answered, " I don't know the answer to the question offhand but I can find the person who knows the answer in 2 minutes"

I think that the effects of the current “lock down” have shown more than ever that a college degree, in far too many ways is overrated and overpriced. Education does not automatically confer competence. Most of our current politicians drive this point home all too clearly everyday......

My father used to say there are two ways of learning, 1) The Greek Way - learn learn learn argue debate and never get around to DOING anything. 2) The Hebrew Way - DO DO DO learn by Doing

I work in a technical industry that hires both people with degrees, and those without, to perform the same tasks. 9/10 times I will take the 20 year old who used to pour concrete or frame houses over the 20 year old college intern. They learn quicker, work harder and bitch a whole lot less. Work ethic and common sense go a long way. I hate to put it in those terms because I do have great respect for education, but it is such a blatant truth. Four years is a long time when you’re young. Many graduates finish college and might as well be finishing high school. Their comrades who got jobs or learned trades after high school are miles ahead in experience.

Again, I have no beef with college education. I just don’t think it should be pushed as the ONLY option the way it is.

All the experience and IQ in the world doesn’t mean shit if you lack common sense.......and that is not something you learn at any college.

That was kind of my point.
I learned more about engineering after college than I did in college, not that what I learned in college wasn't also important. You need common sense in engineering, also.

I've poured concrete, I've framed houses, I've done the hard, hot and dirty work of brick laying and I can honestly say that none of it prepared for my technical profession. Construction workers couldn't even begin to become electronics technicians. I worked with two electronics technicians who use to be TV repairmen. The rest had higher levels of training. Those with less or no training got to work as assemblers.

Bill Gates has an exceptionally high IQ along with training at Harvard and experience developing one of the most sophisticated and successful technical companies in the world. I'd say Bill would be an ideal candidate for picking up on biology. By the way, some of the most successful computer science engineers started out in biology.
