You never answered my question.... which players that are not currently on our team would you be okay with acquiring?
I thought I had. There were five players (IIRC) that were mentioned specifically, and Howard was the only "automatic no" on the list...

Uncle Cliffy is opening a pot shop here ...that's got to spark some interest from NBA players looking for a home past their careers
And don't forget our robust strip club economy.

This magical world of yours doesn't exist. NBA players can't make these type of agreements, the teams can be heavily punished, and even if such an agreement was made it would be totally unenforceable.

Lakers dealt for him and he told them he would not sign a long term contract extension.

Dwight Howard is reportedly on his way to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster trade, but that doesn't mean he has made a firm commitment long-term to the franchise just yet. Howard will not sign a long-term contract extension with the Lakers right now, preferring instead to test free agency, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

None of the players traded in similar situations signed extensions; same reason LaMarcus didn't sign an extension, the player gets so much more waiting until their a free agent.

The Lakers thought Dwight would sign long term, just as the Cavs thought Love would sign long term when they traded Wiggins for him. The Heat thought Dragic would sign with them. Love and Dragic resigned, Howard left. These things aren't binding and players can change their decisions on a whim.

There isn't any scenario the Blazers can trade for Dwight Howard and have assurance he signs here as you stipulated.

It's an open question as to whether the idea of a "FA destination" is antiquated. Looking at Denny's link and all of the top tier FAs signed with their own teams, except LMA. If we ignore the LMAs and the Dwight Howards, we might say that most all non-bitch top tier UFAs sign with their own team in the post-Lillard-Shoe-Deal era.

LAL and NY would love it if all of the top tier FAs demanded to play for their teams, like the "good old days." When was the last time those teams signed any top tier FAs that weren't their own?

So, it's more a matter of what mid-tier FAs do.

They traded for him knowing he wouldn't sign an extension. He let all the teams know who he would sign with.

What remains unclear is whether the Bulls would have executed a deal even if Hennigan had taken back a package centered on Noah and Deng. From the beginning of last season, it seemed that Howard wanted to be dealt to a select number of teams, and the Bulls were not on that list. They never got a clear sense of whether Howard would sign an extension with the Bulls and would embrace playing alongside Rose. His preference always appeared to be going to the Brooklyn Nets or, most recently, the Lakers.

Any potential Howard deal with the Bulls became even trickier because Howard, who has stated through agent Dan Fegan that he won't sign an extension with any team that acquires him...

Love:

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded for Kevin Love based on a handshake deal that served as assurance he would sign a five-year max contract and stay long term.

So would you trade Lillard for him?

It's very silly to say you don't ever miss the opportunity. Like every NBA trade decision it depends entirely on what you have to give up.

Howard is possibly a few month rental if Portland acquires him. Do you trade away multiple years of first round picks? A young core piece such as Vonleh who is on a rookie contract for 3 years? CJ or Plumlee who are both on cheap contracts? That would effectively cost the Blazers a max level player in free agency this summer and a young asset if they were able to resign Howard.

Do you think the Blazers have any way of contending this year with Howard?

I agree the team would acquire him for just cap space, or for low value assets, but just randomly adding whatever aging star you can get without a clear long tern direction is a horrific NBA team building strategy.

The Rockets are going to need some sort of valued asset to let Howard go; it doesn't make any sense for the Blazers to give up such an asset at this point in time.
No. But that would not be an option anyway so really not silly if you think about it.

You miss it if that player is a douchebag of Howard's caliber. And then you're grateful you missed it.
It's funny you of all people would say such a thing. You don't even know the guy or what or if there were many other issues involved in his prior deals. If what you have is what you have heard in the media you have nothing. I personally could not hold what i know about the man as enough info to call him a Douchebag.

I'm tellin u guys dwight lowkey wants to play in Portland.

He always plays his best offensive games against us, and it looked like he was the only Rocket on the court congratulating our guys after the game tonight?

Yeah and he was dappin it up with fans. He probably regrets leaving orlando and Portland is a similar smaller market town he would thrive in. I know he's friendly with Lillard as well. If we can rent him for some draft picks or something, why not?

Dwight was the only guy on their team who played like he wanted to win

Yeah, but Durant had the best workout in the history of workouts for us, so Dwight's audition probably fell on deaf ears. We'll trade for HaCapella instead.

But... did they win? Actually, 1 of the big reasons why they lost & any team that takes him will cont. to lose is because of D-Bag12; he may be dominant/strong (get gaudy stats but not as much/often any more; he's starting to decline not only in stats but most importantly in health, which is why the decline in stats & he's 30) BUT he's ALSO weak: he has limited moves (where's all the additional footwork/payoff from working w/ The Dream? Only a few improvements from those sessions), he slows down his team's offense/pace + his free throws? It's simple to beat a D-Bag12 team when HE is the 1 doing most of the scoring/getting the possessions for his team: get more possessions vs them, speed up the pace, put him on the free throw line as much as possible, try to get the ball out of his players hands & when they have it make them take as long as possible before they CAN get it to D-Bag12, try to get a bunch of 3's (only recommended IF ur team can shoot it which we can!:smiley-laughing:) while denying theirs, & then out rebound them (this last 1 isn't necessary for the win but it makes it easier if u can). I admit, I've always been a D-Bag12 hater but it's not because of jealousy or whatever; it's mostly been because of his stupid shit-attitude; I'm not a Kobe lover but... Kobe's been successful & he/Fakers needed D-Bag12 to have the right mentality to win & that never happened bc it can't happen w/ D-Bag12 bc of the way he is & will always b. I could go on & on about this but I don't want to, D-Bag12's a waste. THE only way I would take him is to facilitate a trade, I'd never want him to wear our colors even for a second.

I wouldn't trade for him because he, apparently, wants $29 mil/season. If we signed him as a FA, he couldn't get that much (I think).

If all we had to give up for him were our older expiring guys and a young guy like Meyers I'd do it, but surely they'd be able to get more than that for him from some other team.

Howard is the type to sleep with underage girls.
I have heard this mentioned on the web more than a few times. More than his ego or his injury history or his inability to become a consistent free-throw shooter, that worries me the most.

Honest question: Are those rumors about him true? Is he a creeper?

I agree with all of you. If he had a list of cities before and we were not it, I doubt we would be added now.
Portland is an acquired taste. Being exposed to our beautiful city for only 2 months (in early spring) does more harm then good. At a quick glance only the weather and weirdness will standout. To appreciate the city you need more time.

He played in shitholes known as orlando and Houston. Portland is much nicer. Most importantly though the fan support is second to none. That will appeal to a guy like Howard more than anything.
