Dude this is Portland. The worst neighborhood in Portland couldn’t touch some of the ghettos on the east coast. I have never felt unsafe in Portland. You guys act like you have some kind of street knowledge because you went to grant. I went to grant for summer school. I had friends who grew up a few blocks from Grant. That is not some kind of hard neighborhood.

My cousin was shot and killed INSIDE of Grant HS.

Each one of the stories involve true friends of mine I lost on these “Safe” streets of Portland. Just because it wasn’t around you, doesn’t mean that shit ain’t happening.

Not trying to come at you, but you need to open your eyes to whats going on out there. Or HAS gone on out there. You don’t know what dviss or I or whoever has seen or experienced and thats something I need to remind myself sometimes.

But one thing I can tell you, I saw more “action” growing up on our “streets” of NE Portland, than I did in the god damn Army.

I think that’s the problem. It’s become common form for those that are racist to use terms that could be taken multiple ways. It gives the the “who me” act to play, and allows them to talk out of both sides of their mouths.

I think you are correct that the term isn’t in itself racist, if used it making fun of my own shortcomings and I’ve never heard it uttered with race in mind.

But when you hear or read those same words coming from Simone who is always tiptoeing on the racism line it should give pause and context should require a different reading.

On the other hand @dviss1 might be a little more touchy on the subject of racism than you or I. That’s totally understandable. For him (please correct me dviss if I’m wrong) he expects others who have read countless posts from a particular poster that step over the line to give dviss the credibility to call him out and have the rest of the community get his back from time to time.

These are blurry lines and I think both of you have excellent points and are smart enough to understand the weaknesses of your own arguments.

I am asking him to clarify his position, because I had interpreted his meaning that the term "edumacate" was racist in general. Now he's saying that it was only racist because Nate said it to him, and that saying "edumacate" to a black person is considered racism 101. My wife's sister was kidnapped and shot in Salem.

Portland is still an extremely safe city compared to many urban centers.

But does Portland have neighborhoods where you simply do not go?

I wanted to give you examples of what dviss and I we’re SURROUNDED by and INGROSSED in, during our formative years. Events that have formed us and our thinking. I don’t want to speak for him, but like I said before, how you are raised and who and where, is how you see things. I know you I understand this. Of course PDX is safe compared to others....and to be honest the old neighborhood is NOTHING like is was then. Gentrification has taken care of that. But I just didn’t appreciate you coming at me and him about not having “Street Knowledge” because of where our HS was located and because you spent some quiet summer afternoons there.
