I've had great conversations with everyone in this thread. I may not agree with them on some things but I would happily drink a beer with them.
Gotta agree 100% with this. I’ve been to several M&G’s, preseason and suite games and have had a great time each and every event. It’s allowed me to meet more than a few members and, without exception everyone was great to hang out with. I’d love to do it more often. @dviss1 can be a lightening rod, but he’s one of the funniest and most animated guys going (and one of the biggest and best shit flippers and shit takers present). And I’d have a beer and a smoke with @MARIS61 any day of the week because for all his different takes, he doesn’t take it too seriously and he’s a fun guy to hang with. And I’d say the same about @MarAzul (even though I havent hung out with him yet....and I doubt that smoke thing would fly with him). And criminy, it blows me away how many short jokes @Chris Craig endures but he always comes back with ones that are even funnier. And @theprunetang might be the only guy I know who can belly up to the bar with @BLAZINGGIANTS. We’re all different but we’re all the same. And we’re ALL taking some of this shit WAY too seriously. I mean, someone already got to @JFizzleRaider and that’s been a serious loss to this board. How many more quality members do we have to lose before everyone has moved on. I love spirited discourse spiced with a little snark, but we ALL (this poster included) need to work on being more respectful of each other’s views. At the end of the day, they are only opinions. And we all know how much those are worth at the end of that day. And for those whose sole purpose here might be to troll and bait others, it’s time to move elsewhere. We have a plethora of new members aboard all of a sudden. Let’s don’t scare them all off at once.......

As far as the term “edumacate” I take it as somebody trying to crack on how a “black person would talk” . I’ve heard people use it that way and not making fun of a hillbilly.

Never heard it used in any other way than with a hillbilly accent.
Once again, like I asked that Sippy kid, where he was raised and who around. If you grew up in the country or suburbs, you might have only heard it that way. I grew up with half white, half black kids and neighborhood, so that’s how I used to hear it.

You make some very good points @UncleCliffy'sDaddy There are a lot of different personalities and opinions here. I know I allow myself to get heated up sometimes but I try to argue mostly in good fun. Because its fun to argue. I like a conversation, and I am willing to give as much as I get. But, I try not to take things too personally. I am fine with being short. I have heard every joke. I can dish them out just as well. Too, if I walked into a bar with @theprunetang and @BLAZINGGIANTS I could match them drink for drink despite my size. Ask @theprunetang. Didn't you hear the one about that. @Chris Craig @theprunetang and @BLAZINGGIANTS walked into a bar. The bar had to restock. But, yeah people are taking things to seriously. Lets debate, lets argue, but lets respect each other. I'd drink a beer with any of you...even you @MarAzul and @MARIS61

Maybe @Nate would disagree but I read his response as a sarcastic way of calling YOU a racist moron. Not black people in general, just you.

I think he was thinking of those black guys like I've seen on YouTube that tell white people we're all gonna die and to worship black men as our true kings. There was one video I saw a few years ago that would show what I'm talking about. Can't find it now.

Thinking something isn't knowing it and the reason he said it is because I'm black. Point blank.

Those people are rarer than white racists. How the FUCK is 13% of the country gonna make you bow down...?

Really?

Is this a problem for you everyday or is that just another reason to live in fear of becoming the minority?

Stop being afraid... White folks literally have no reason to fear us.

I use pictures to make fun of hillbillies

I got to use a wood fired hot tub a ways back. It was a 3.5 mile walk from the nearest road outside a cabin in the woods. A creek ran 40 feet away and I could hear owls and other critters nonstop. It was a wonderful experience although for the first time ever the water would get too hot. Had to be careful.

So why can’t it be someone cracking on someone’s bad grammar and poor education? It doesn’t have to be racial. It could be an insult towards low income/low class, which is black, white, whatever.

how do you fit CC, BG and PT on the same bar stool? Turn it upside down!

That is what MarAzul was getting at. He doesn't seem to know a lot of the things he's supposed to.

It's an old term, from what I can tell. The only source I have found that actually seems to go into the origin of the word is this:

http://listserv.linguistlist.org/pipermail/ads-l/2005-April/048952.html

Not sure how accurate this is. They don't cite all their sources. The word seems to be mostly tried to Popeye the Sailor in the 50s and 60s.

It has been pretty closely tied to uneducated white people, and from that same link they have associated it to white people using it as an insult to someone's intelligence, in some cases black people.

So it seems to me that it is actually something that white trash has been using for a long time, not something that was invented by black people, but it has been used as an insult towards black people as well as poor white trash. That's the best I can come up with, but I don't see it specifically as an insult to black people. Mostly it's an insult to uneducated people.

Regardless of any of that, context matters.

Why is this even a debate?

Because of WHO typed it. I don’t come to OT very often, but I’ve very respectfully asked this kid where is from a couple times because of the shit he has posted. He knew his intent.

You know what man... you tell me I’m part of the problem, which is demeaning and insulting, because I asked an honest question, so I go out and do research and try to have a civil discussion about it. That’s the whole point of a forum. Discussion.

I’m sorry but you simply saying that something is racist is not good enough for me. Not when I have never heard anything to support that claim.

Maybe he meant it to be racially insensitive, but that doesnt mean that the term itself is aimed specifically at black people. Maybe he thinks dviss is dumb. I have no idea. I don’t know the guy.

in my view if someone is offended by insults period...the person using offensive language should take a hint....what rarely gets used is the PM mode...maybe if folks private msg someone they offend, it'll stay out of the Hatfield and McCoy battlefield .....Sly is good about using the pm function to deal with things...personally, I'd like to have the skill barfo has at dealing with arguments...he's really got it down...Denny and I argue all the time and we trade insults but I can't ignore him so it's a guilty pleasure....and I really like Denny's take on basketball....if the builder of a forum insults members....members will follow suit...I also understand fully that Denny is in the last stages of madcow....empathy...as to those who make it personal....I don't need that around my life....

That dude has tossed around some pretty bad stuff man, and thats coming from me! Him and dviss have gone back and forth and that kid has no filter and losses his mind on here every day. He knew exactly what he was saying. You’re smarter than that bro.

Curious where the 3 people who LIKED your post grew up and who around? Honest question.

Dude this is Portland. The worst neighborhood in Portland couldn’t touch some of the ghettos on the east coast. I have never felt unsafe in Portland. You guys act like you have some kind of street knowledge because you went to grant. I went to grant for summer school. I had friends who grew up a few blocks from Grant. That is not some kind of hard neighborhood.

I'm not saying that Dviss was wrong to be offended. It's not about specifically what he said.

Dviss is saying that the term is just racist in general, as in nobody should be saying it. I want to know if that's widely considered true.

if it offends dviss.....that's enough truth to accept it...move on

If you're passively accepting racism (you go as far as to look up shit to justify it) then YES, you're part of the problem.

Settle down. I didn’t grow up next to Grant I grew up off of 23rd and NE Prescott. Thats a whole other world bro. Especially in the mid to late 80s. I can send you links of what it was like back then and how many friends I lost during that 10 year span including our friend who was murdered next to the gym my sophomore year DURING school hours. Check your history before you post about where I grew up. And I’m very serious.. Of course we aren’t Oakland or Detroit, but learn your history before you judge. Check that school boundary maps my friend. You saying that because Grant is surrounded by a very affluent neighborhood so the school is safe is very naive.

I never once said that. MFs around here don't read...
