Of course it's unclear. The question isn't whether or not we want to keep him. The question is, how much will it cost to keep him, and will keeping him cost us a shot at a specific player or players?

Give him the qualifying offer. 2 EZ
You know that comes with a much higher cap hold, right? IIRC, his QA is a little under $4MM, but his cap hold will be almost $6MM until he signs. On the other hand, we can not extend the offer, use every cent of our cap room to bring in other players, then sign him using an exception. The risk is losing him to another team, but if losing him gives us the ability to land an All-Star caliber player or even two, I'll help him pack, call him a cab, shake his hand, and wave goodbye to him as he drives away.

Wish we could just do a little wink wink promise to him........ than wait and sign him after we go after some big names.

Good Luck with that

The evaluation was complete when Shooter made his brilliant thread days after we traded.for.him.

Well I agree it is not an easy decision. He is not going to sign until he knows how much he is worth. And I am guessing he won't know that until at least the end of July.

So does Neil have a particular player targeted for 12-13 million? Or does he have another plan? I hate waiting until July to know who he wants.

I've been impressed with him as a backup. Wouldn't mind having him back. The JJ situation is the one that is gonna be a clusterfuck this summer though.

He's dropped off in performance, frankly, over the last 3 weeks. No need to extend the QO to him, but let him know he'd be a great back-up at the vet minimum for a year. Let someone else spend money on him.

His shooting has gone up and down but his playmaking skills have been there the whole time. Just last night he had double-digit assists.

I don't care how many assists he had, frankly. Last night the team scored 74 freaking points. I don't see the need to extend the QO to him.

The first part is ridiculous. That is the PGs main job. Create scoring opportunities for his teammates and Maynor does that as well as any backup in the league. It was obvious we were going to be blown out by MEM without Batum and LMA. That came as no surprise. His QO is 3.2 MIL. That seems in line for a good backup PG. Wink wink deal with him to not extend QO? Sure. Outside of that the contract is commensurate with his skills. The bench feel was night and day difference from before he came to after.

Why not the room exception? Couldn't we theoretically sign him after renouncing everyone and using up the cap space with the room exception?

He's a career 11.2 PER player with a USG% of 17.2. With Portland, he's at 11.1 PER with an 18.5 USG%.

There is a reason he was let go for no reason. He's just not a very good NBA PG. I'm not against him coming back next year, but if he's eating cap space, I don't see the reason for that cap hold. He's not going to get any decent offers that even come close to the QO.

Come on now PER is one of the most worthless stats thrown around in here. Hickson is a god in PER. Pay the man max right? My eyes tell me that he is best backup PG we have had in years. 3.2 is not a high contract. Andre Miller makes a 5 MIL a year as a backup.

Our team is night and day different with him on it. If you are saying we are getting Jack (who will cost more) or Calderon (who will get more) then sure you can pass on Maynor. As you can see PGs don't come cheap if they are any good. Outside of those guys the other names in free agency are a huge downgrade for our second unit.

Really? Nothing close to 3.2 million? What is your definition of close? I am sure we will re-visit that statement in 4 months. I am not saying he will get over 5 million, but I am pretty certain someone will pay 3-4 million for a decent back up PG.

What? He just dropped 10 dimes coming off the worst bench in the league:crazy:

I'd say that he's well worth the 2yr/5.3M (total) "Room" Exception after we've used up all of our cap space.

EDIT: Posted before I read JFizzle's post. What he said.

Makes sense to me.

You simply can't focus on a back up PG before you deal with the glaring hole in the middle.

Maynor would be nice to have, but not at the cost of losing out on a real difference maker in FA or trade because of his cap hold and QO

Why? Please tell me Olshey isn't thinking about keeping him? Renounce him or S&T him and move on

MM.... This guy is putting up 14/10 every night. Pekovic or anybody else we are going to throw a ton of money at isn't gong to put that up. I know he can't play post defense, but who can?

Man you read this thread it really enforces how many options there are for Olshey this summer. This summer is huge for the Blazers and the direction he decides to go with will determine his future as well as the teams. A lot is on the line for the Blazers.

Yes we need a big time center, but haven't we already determined that none of the free agents are very good defensive players? So the unbalanced trade is still the best option in my mind. My question is when is the earliest that trade can be done? I assume as soon as we renounce all of our players after the end of the season. It would be nice to get it done before the draft. I am guessing it may take our pick to pull it off.

Either way it is a huge gamble. Maybe the best option is to keep JJ and Maynor and simply sign Jermaine O'Neal for two years. Again those free agent centers have flaws too. And the ones we want via trade will be hard to pull off.
Olshey has to be a nervous wreck.

Like Pekovic, he is a sieve on defense. Hickson needs to go. we need a center, not a back up PF

This is very true. Both Pekovic and Al Jefferson will get big money and would help us, but not get us to the level we want. Even the guys we have suggested in un-balanced trades have flaws. (Okafor/McGee)

And young Players like Mozgov are unproven and un-skilled.

Not an easy decision for Olshey. I think he will shoot for the moon...... and miss.
